  1. Lol no plans on losing affiliation but go on then
  2. This was SHL stuff (Cartier = 701): just wanted to share it as I heard there was a memorial thread going on here too. Dave and I got to know each other and were D partners on one of the most fun teams I've ever been on. I see the phrase "big-hearted" going around and I couldn't agree more. All love, Dave.

  5. VHL Throwback: Mats Johnsson In honor of VHL League History week, let's take a look at the career of the VHL's all-time TPE leader: Mats Johnsson. Johnsson racked up 1,654 TPE in his career, 39 more than any other player has achieved thus far. Johnsson featured very briefly in one playoff game for Oslo in Season 55 before being drafted just 11th overall by Yukon in the Season 56 VHLM Dispersal Draft. Johnsson put up 87 points in 68 games for the Rush in what would be his only full season in the VHLM. Johnsson was selected 12th overall by the now defunct Stockholm Vikings, who had a boatload (get it?) of picks in the second round of the Season 57 Entry Draft. Johnsson had a forgettable opening two years that included a year in Calgary. The first stint would last just a year. Johnsson won the Continental Cup in his third season, Season 59, as a burgeoning top pairing player for the Seattle Bears, and had an even more promising fourth season in the league before. His second stint in Calgary would see his career take off. Johnsson took home four personal awards from Seasons 61 through 63, including two honors as best Defensive Defenseman, one as best Offensive Defenseman, and one as top overall Defenseman. That run also brought him a second Continental Cup, in Season 62. Johnsson was the second-highest scoring defenseman three years running, third-highest the year prior to that streak, and fourth-highest in his final season. You have to wonder how much brighter his legacy would be had he been the top-scoring defenseman some of those seasons. He'll have to settle for a Hall of Fame induction in Season 66.
  6. Notes from the Road Franklin Cartwright, The Athletic Houston Some brief thoughts from my notebook as I make the long trip from Halifax to Houston (by air, even- thanks Athletic budget team): 1. The Bulls are the best team overall, but some nights I wonder if they’re even a good offensive hockey team. Tonight in Halifax was a fantastic example. One goal against a team that’s bottom half in preventing them. One goal loss. They’re still way too reliant on Sean McGee and the defense corps. 2. Haz Howe is getting some interest as a Season 70 draft prospect. The kid is raw, but not unteachable. If he can get some more development and some regular work, there might be hope for at least one of Houston’s bargain bin bonanza (you can’t tell me that wasn’t ownership cheaping out) to pan out. 3. That being said, even if the Howe brothers are simply an amusing diversion from serious VHLM hockey, they’re definitely not going to be forgotten anytime soon. In the third period of a close game, Midas Howe was seen poking Beo Howe’s noggin with his stick from two seats down, then pointing at Nano Howe every time. The funny part was, Nano Howe was poking someone with his stick: Doc Howe, who blamed Mo Howe, and, well, you see where this went.

  8. Howe Brothers Debut to Mixed Reviews; Houston Holding Onto Top Spot “They’re hacks.” That’s what one Houston Bulls fan said to a KHOU 11 reporter after a recent shootout loss to basement dwellers Ottawa Lynx. The Bulls controlled the run of play for the entire game, but Ottawa prevailed in what has been an interesting run of games for the Bulls. Houston made waves at the trade deadline by signing six free agents, all brothers. The Howe siblings reportedly all grew up in a research station on McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, learning to play hockey with very limited opportunity to skate due to harsh conditions. The Howe brothers look very inexperienced in high level competition, though their elite size and potential chemistry prompted the Bulls to sign the entire set, including the only goalie among them, Haz Howe. Howe was in net for the Bulls’ surprising loss against the Lynx- his first professional start. Howe made just 11 saves on 14 shots, and stopped only one of three shootout attempts. The Bulls coaching staff apparently decided to give regular netminder Sean McGee extra rest, as Howe was in net once more in a rematch with the Lynx. Howe would face just 12 shots all night as the Bulls coasted to a 4-1 victory. Only Mo Howe, a defenseman, has registered a point in the “Howe era”, which admittedly has only been five games or so. Only Mo Howe has seen the ice in all five of those games, with the other Howe skaters playing in three. The Howe brothers have managed to rack up 10 penalty minutes and 17 hits in those three games, leading to some Bulls fans to question whether the Antarctic sextet simply represented a cheap way to flesh out the bottom half of the Houston roster. The Bulls are on the title hunt this season, and many were hoping for the Houston front office to make a splash. It remains to be seen Howe (Editor’s Note: my most sincere apologies) much they’ve improved their chances at a championship. The Bulls have the stingiest defense in the league after 51 games played, and hold a four point lead over Minnesota for the top spot in the VHLM. With 21 games remaining in the 72-game regular season, the Bulls will need to find the net more consistently if they’re to hang onto their position. Despite their record, Houston is only 7th in goals scored, and some around the league believe Las Vegas’s dynamic duo of Jeff Tates and Benny Graves could make the difference in a potential playoff matchup. Houston has two games remaining against Las Vegas this season amidst what should be a thrilling run-in to the playoffs. Keep an eye on whether the new additions can provide something more than the general goonery they’ve displayed thus far. If Houston can develop some depth scoring, it would go a long way toward cementing their status as a title favorite. It’s sometimes said that playoff goals come from unexpected sources, as the physical play that often defines elimination formats can sometimes wash out all but the most elite offensive threats. It would certainly be unexpected for one or more of the man-children Houston has brought in to be a playoff hero, but stranger things have happened.
