Falling down the ranks a little bit in the draft though, he went 8th overall to the Riga Reign. Throughout his VHL career, Villeneuve quickly became one of the most steady and productive defensemen in the league. Breaking onto the scene in the VHL in S37, Phil had 10 goals and 35 assists, giving him 45 points in his rookie season. Along with 174 hits and 144 blocked shots, he was already a prominent member on Riga's blue line. Although Riga had a decent playoff run, Phil's Reign were taken out in the Semi-Finals by Davos, where he had 5 assists in 13 games overall. In Season 38, Phil Villeneuve upped his point production by a few points, scoring 7 goals and adding 41 assists, for a sum of 48 points this time around. He also improved in the hits column with 231. In that post-season, the Riga Reign were once against ousted by Davos, where Phil had 6 points in 10 games during that Semi-Finals run. On to Season 39, Riga's stud defenseman had 40 points, which was a little bit of a drop, but still steady. Included in those 40 points were 13 goals, which was a high for him in his career so far. Once again, the Reign were in the post-season, and funnily enough, against HC Davos Dynamo once again. Again, Phil and his team lost to Davos, but this time in a 7 game series. In those playoffs, Villeneuve's numbers in the playoffs were less than stellar, with only 2 points in 14 games. It was not until Season 40 where the tide turned for Phil Villeneuve. In that season he had 11 goals and 37 assists, giving him 48 points once again. Adding to that was his 162 hits and 107 blocked shots. The important part of the season was in the playoffs, where throughout 16 games, Phil Villeneuve had 15 points, helping the Riga Reign get through Helsinki, Cologne, and the New York Americans to win the Continental Cup. With that came Phil's first taste at the holy grail of the VHL. --------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Villeneuve's final season with the Riga Reign was in Season 41, and it happened to be his most productive one point-wise as well. In that season, he put up 15 goals and 53 assists, giving him 68 points, which was his best that far into his career. He also added 185 hits and 121 blocked shots as well, so not only was he a force offensively, but defensively and physically also. In that off-season, the Reign made the VHL Finals once again against the New York Americans, although this time it was New York who prevailed in 7 games. Phil had 5 points in their 13 game run. For Season 42, Phil Villeneuve would leave his team for the first time, going to the North American Conference's Seattle Bears. In his first season with the Bears in S42, he put up 81 points, including 18 goals. Both these were career milestones for him, and almost matched his career high in hits as well (231), with 228. He also had the most blocked shots he ever had, with 175. Unfortunately for Seattle, they did not qualify for the playoffs, but Villeneuve himself did win the Grimm Jonsson Trophy, for the VHL's Top Leader. Phil's final season of VHL action was in Season 43, and although this time he did not put up another 80 points, he did have 50, with 6 goals. It was the post-season where the Seattle Bears surprised everybody. Phil and his Bears had a 16 game run as big underdogs, and he brought forth 12 points within those games. With upset after upset, Seattle took out Toronto, Quebec City, and Cologne to win the Continental Cup, which would be Phil Villeneuve's second in his career. He would also go on to win the Grimm Jonsson Trophy once again. Although not an offensive powerhouse throughout his career, Villeneuve was a force to be reckoned with out of the ice, and was one of the VHL's best leaders throughout his career. Winning a couple of Cups, including one in his final season, his career definitely did not end with disappointment overall. You made Villeneuve sound way better than he was so thank you Even though he was a scrub, I am glad that when I came back to full activity, I managed to salvage his career with 2 Cups and 2 Top Leader awards. Villeneuve will forever be the stain on my record of players. Thanks for this! Grammar: 2/2 - It flowed, it was well-stated, it was punctuated correctly - basically everything you'd want to see from a head grader Appearance: 1/1 - You have a very nice layout here. It's clean-cut, with matching pictures and alignment, and I am a big fan of hyperlinks to things, and since this is a series, it's dead useful too.
