jRuutu got a reaction from jacobcarson877 in Should the welfare-claiming new users be banned from the raffle?
In the thread: "2023 Donation Drive Raffle Draw", the league leadership used the term "new people" when referring to the new users who should be made aware of the opportunity to participate in the raffle. After I read the comment, I could not help but think is "people" too strong of a word for someone who claims welfare? I also started to think about whether the welfare-claiming new users should be banned from participating in the raffle. Despite a number of the newer users in VHL being active and creating content, you can still see a large portion of users claiming welfare.

If one of the newer welfare-claiming users ends up winning a nice prize, I think it sends a bad message. In my mind welfare claiming new user winning is similar to someone breaking into an old grandma's car, stealing their purse left on the front seat, and then cashing in on a lottery ticket that happened to be a winning ticket. Sure, technically speaking the thief won in the lottery, but do they deserve it?

I would go as far as saying the raffle should be only for those who donated hard cash. I can only speak for myself here, but if I donate to a charity, knowing I am making a difference would make me feel good, but an equally nice feeling comes from others knowing I donated to charity. I think in the case of VHL, winning a prize from the raffle is one way to let everybody in VHL know: "I donated money to charity".

I think welfare-claiming newer users should not be allowed to participate, same is true with those users who did not donate - me included.

    1. We are still leading the EU. Do you think we can hang on to that lead?
We are the best Russian team in the league, and that is what matters the most, especially if you want to be the best Russian team in the league.

    2. Do you have any suggestions about how the team can improve?
Open tryouts for the fans, maybe we find someone who is able to play and help the team?

    3. Do I need to add humor in these pressers to make them more stupid?
Not necessarily, but I think you should ask question or two in Chinese to please the fans in China.

    4. How many pancakes does it take to fix a flat tire on a submarine?
    As many as it takes.

    5. I think winning is fun. How do you compare this season to last season?
What do we have to look forward to next? Yea we win some cups, but what then? I think its time for a rebuild, so we got more to look forward to.

    6. The lines were changed and for the most part it has had a positive impact. Do you have any thoughts about future changes?
Take the goalie out on the powerplay, but have the extra skater protect the net. When the PK throws the puck into our zone, the extra skater is probably a lot better getting the puck up the ice than our goalie = more chances to score on the powerplay.

    Article Review:

Like the author I sometimes wonder why someone uses AI, it seems that more and more people are being caught.  AI currently, or at least those versions easily available on the internet are good but still have a number of flaws that result in them being easily identified.  I just don't expect that AI generation of articles will be indistinguishable from human created content for a while.  Now from a graphic perspective the use of AI to create a base image doesn't bother me as long as sufficient work is being done to personalize afterwards.  I don't think we will ever get rid of AI use, there will always be someone wanting to take the easy way out but honestly, with the fact that any random writing is accepted just write your own articles.

The very first thought that comes to my mind when I see someone getting banned for using AI is: "They finally got them! Someone has been cheating for a while, and now they finally got caught". In my mind, that is how you would use AI, you would do your best to be subtle and hide the fact that you have used AI, but then again, I guess that goes against the whole idea of using AI, more than likely you would spend more time and energy hiding the use of AI than for example writing a 500-word article in VHL.

As I happened to notice the latest ban thread update about the use of AI, I was curious about what kind of work was submitted. I wanted to see if would I be able to tell the article is written by AI. What I discovered left me disappointed but also impressed in a way.

    Link to article.

The first thing you notice is the wall of text. The user here did not have the time and decency to put spaces between paragraphs. More than likely they used AI to create the content with their phone. They just copy pasted the text, and that was that. I am picturing the user was sitting in some office bathroom, hiding from their boss. To distract themselves from the smell and noises coming in from other stalls, they decided to create a VHL article with whatever AI tool they found. If you read the first few sentences, it seems almost impossible for someone with the ability to write like that not to put spaces between the paragraphs.

The name "The Flying Guardian" is used in the title of the thread. This nickname was almost surely created by the AI. The first time you see "The Flying Guardian" being mentioned is in the second paragraph, so the user here went through the text in the hopes of finding something to use for the title. I think this decision is gross. We all know coming up with something fun and interesting for the title is not easy,  but to not even create the title of the thread by yourself? Gross.

Later on, they added references to VHL, VHLM, and Houston Bulls with the following:

"As the VHLM draft approached, Benson's name began circulating in conversations among scouts and analysts. Many were intrigued by the prospect of having a goaltender who could bring a new level of excitement to the game. On draft day, the hockey world held its breath as Benson's name echoed through the arena. The Houston Bulls, known for their innovative approach to the game, selected him in the third round, much to the surprise of those expecting a more traditional choice. "

I am 75% sure the user wrote portions of this part on their own and then added it in. For example: "The Houston Bulls, known for their innovative approach to the game", the part in the end: "to the game" does not sound like something AI would say. Also, the place where the text is added appears to be in the middle of a paragraph that gets interrupted by the text talking about the VHLM draft. This is an interesting choice. It shows the user did not take the time to read through the article completely in the end. But then again the lack of spaces could also explain the odd position of the VHLM quote.

It is easy to judge now that I have been told the work is written by AI, but based on the little experience I have with AI, if I had been tasked to judge whether the text was written by AI or not, I would give it to the AI. It appears to be so obvious.

Beyond the AI content, what I find the most interesting is the fact this user did not have to create this article. They have been claiming "Affiliate 12" from the start.  They did not have to create an article to earn extra TPE for their player now. The only reason, in this case, to create the article so early was to let VHL know a bit more about the player and the user behind the player. I think showing they are invested in the league is nice, and exactly what the league needs from newer users. When you then on top of that add the ability to claim affiliate 12 TPE every week, this player almost certainly had first-round pick potential AND, more importantly, the potential to be a top-level VHL player.

With the use of AI, they managed to tank their draft stock quite nicely. The level of care and thinking shown in the creation of the article shows it is only a matter of time before they do something to mess up the "affiliate 12" earnings in the other league. They are now seen as a risky pick. This is also exactly what the league needs. Who is going to be brave enough to pick the player, and when they might be picked? Who is going to see the "affiliate 12" earnings week after week, and think to themselves: "Sure, they had a one-week TPE ban, but that was a month ago, and they have still earned "affiliate 12" ever since!" ?

I think the fact they could earn 12 TPE from affiliate and still, they decided to use AI is what tanks the draft stock more than the actual use of AI, which is interesting. Sure, the article in question here is a biography article for a career point task, but we rarely see something like this in VHL. If this was just a regular point task-earning user who tried to cut corners and got punished for it, by the draft time, you would have questions, but would you still be as convinced the user is going to mess it all up in the future? Maybe the affiliate 12 TPE and what it means, the potential, at least in my mind, the user here is almost surely going to mess it up in the future. Who does something like this? You basically have the 12 TPE, you have it, go post it and do the career task later, but they decided to post an article written by AI.

I hope the user and player continue to be "active", so we get to see what the future brings. It is stories like this that make VHL so fun and exciting. It is stories like this that show the power of AI, it can create a cloud of mystery on top of the people who use AI; what are they capable of doing? What ARE they going to do next? That is fun.

Presser for the week ending 1/21

    1. We are off and running. Are you surprised at our fast start?
Little bit, things have evened out since, but still such a nice start is something that I was not fully expecting. Nice to see!

    2. After the dust settles, what position will we place?
3rd in Eu I will say, we will find a nice rhythm and keep taking points.

    3. Are you more excited to earn when we are winning?
Winning has the opposite effect on me, I feel bad rubbing it in by earning and possibly winning even more. Feels too much.

    4. Should we look for a player to fill a gap or two and just go for it this season?
Sure, why not if there is some interesting options out there, I am all for trying some interesting angles!

    5. What team/teams do you think will really push us this season?
All the teams in EU, all the games against them will be very valuable.

    6. It's so early but it looks like the EU is going to be stronger than the NA, you agree?
I would say so, we fighting out here, in every game

Callum is on the way for his first practice with his new team. He uses the subway for his commute as do a lot of New Yorkers and boarded the subway at Canal Street. But he is not alone. Rin Kagamine, his flat mate and fellow draftee joined him for the ride. Neither of them has lived in New York before. However, both are used to rely on public transportation for their daily travel needs. Switzerland as well as Japan have a very well functioning public transportation system. So they sit alongside, playing Tetris against each other on a vintage game boy. Some people wearing New York Americans hats or t-shirt look at the odd 'couple', not being certain whether it could be that someone who makes millions would actually ride on the subway. Rin is the first to notice and pokes Cal in the ribs. The Swiss defender looks up and notices the sideway glances. He speaks up: 'Sorry, we are new in New York. Is it impolite to play game boy on the Sub?'. 'No, Sir.' a little girl completely dressed in Americans garb replies. 'We are just wondering whether you are 'the Beauty and the Beast'.'
Her Dad is embarassed and tells his daughter that she cannot use their nicknames. Cal and Rin smile and say: 'Yes, she can. We think they are witty names and we wear them proudly. After all, our paychecks come in a round about way from you supporters, so how could we be angry or offended?'
'Will you use the sub on a regular basis?' asks a guy who appears to be a construction worker with a 'I ❤️ NYA' hard hat.
'Of course', answers Rin. 'What is good enough for honest, hard working folks like you is certainly good enough for Cal and me.'
'Would you sign my player cards?' asks a teenage boy. 'With pleasure.' replies Janser on behalf of both of them. 'We just cannot miss our exit, as we do not fancy being yelled at for being late for our first practice with your team. That would leave a bad first impression, you see?'
After some back and forth and signing the odd souvenir, Kagamine and Callum leave the coach at 23rd Street and wave good bye to their supporters. They walk to the MSG in search of the locker room, as they brought some personal belongings with their dufflebags. They have no trouble finding their goal. As they timed their departure with some margin of error, they are a bit early and are there before the other players or even coach STZ. So Callum has enough time at hand to find his locker, which is already properly labeled 'Callum Gary Yannick Janser, #7, A'. He is flabbergasted when he sees the letter. He swiftly pulls out his uniform and finds indeed the 'A' stitched to his left chest. 'Rin, would you believe that? They give captaincies to rookies in New York.'
'Congrats, boss.' Rin replies, 'Oh would you shut up, now?' is Cal's response.
After having changed they decide to skate some laps. Callum has goosebumps to touch Americans ice for the first time. What a storied arena. The Jersey proudly hanging in the rafters. Players like David Night, Grimm Jonsson, Conner Low, Brick Wahl and Jorma Ruutu are house hold names in the Madison Square Garden and the fans reminiscense fondly of the last cup winning team in S53.
Fast forward a couple of games into the season, and Janser has already built up a reputation as a no-nonsense defender. He is one of the leaders in checks dished out, penalties taken and has an immaculate fighting record of 1/1. So far, no surprises and New York got exactly the player as advertised. However, some were taken aback, and Janser is one of the firsts to admit so himself, that the hulking defender is also quite productive with seven helpers in nine games. No goals as of yet, but it appears only a matter of 'when' and not 'if' that the Calgary native will find the back of the net.
A promising rookie season has begun.

jRuutu got a reaction from Spartan in Turmoil in Moscow - promises of long off-season break taken back?
Rumors coming from Moscow suggest a number of players on the roster are currently facing an uncertain future. Moscow Menace finished 7th in the European division last year. Despite the roster improving steadily week after week, many players have already been planning their off-season holidays as expectations for the team this year were an outside shot of making the playoffs. Against expectations, Moscow Menace has started the ongoing season with 6 wins from 7 games, resulting in an uncertain future, and numerous hotel and plane reservations being canceled.

Moscow Menace center Jarmo Ruutu commented on the hot start after a 3-1 win from Warsaw: "Yeah you know it is what it is, we had a tough year last year and now we are first in the league. Of course, we have not played even ten games yet, but a lot of players have been forced to adjust mentally, we might play a long season this time around. That is something many of the players in the locker room have never dealt with before, but we will get there together. If we have to cancel our holidays and book them at the last minute - that is something we just have to deal with"

    1. If the top team is a Ferrari, what car would Moscow be?
Volvo of some sorts,  made from solid pieces, gets you where you want to go.

    2. Making the playoffs would be a good step for the team, do you agree?
I agree! I think we have a good chance in getting there this year, especially after a hot start.

    3. Do you have any great ideas about recruitment?
Contact animal rescue centers and ask if any of the animals are able to use a computer,  if we don't have to teach the animals how to use the computers - I think we are halfway to having new members for VHL!

    4. Are you an anime fan? If so, what do you like?
Not really, I have not followed the scene.

    5. What is a "Menace" and why do we have a bearded king for a logo?
I always pictured the king being a hated small-town king who went to other villages to steal food and other items, the "Menace" name came from him showing his bare ass to whoever was chasing him. They could never catch him, he was a Menace.

    6. On a scale from 1 to 10, how much does Spartan suck?
I don't think there are levels to sucking, you either suck or you don't. Tough to say if Spartan sucks, they are doing their best in sucking and not sucking, that is all you can ask for.

jRuutu got a reaction from Nathan_8 in Where did it all go so wrong?
The father walking the daughter down the aisle, taking your hat off when you walk into a Church,  not looking someone in the eyes at the urinals, these are all traditions that people have followed for thousands of years.  What made them special is not you doing the act itself there and then, but you knowing that so many people have followed the same path in the past. Participating and doing your best in following the traditions is a way to show your respect to those who came before you.

Where did it all go so wrong? Malmo Nighthawks have named goalie Ash Sparks as their captain.  There is only one word that can be used to describe the nomination: abomination.  Instead of walking the daughter to the aisle, they texted the daughter two hours before the wedding and said they went to play a few rounds of golf with their mates. Instead of taking the hat off when walking into a Church, they took their pants off also. Instead of avoiding eye contact at the urinals in an half-empty bathroom, they walked to the next urinal and offered their hand for a handshake.

What Malmo Nighthawks have done is an attack against the essence of the game known as ice hockey, the beauty of the game is being tarnished, but that comes second to the boldness and sheer wickedness of the Malmo Nighthawks players and staff members. The members of the Malmo Nighthawks organization have publicly released statements such as "we do whatever we want",  and the icing on the cake is responding "I could really give a shit dude lol"  to a fan questioning the integrity of the decision.  The attitude that shines through tells a story that will almost certainly have no happy ending. The Malmo Nighthawks are here to ruin your good time, and not in a fun and kinda cool way. They are here to ruin your fun by disrespecting the traditions and making anyone watching feel as uncomfortable as possible.

Where do we go from here? That is a question a lot of people are thinking about right now. When something has been done for so long, and then someone goes and does something totally different, it makes you think: what else are these people capable of doing? Commentators online have speculated that a potential next move Malmo Nighthawks are thinking about running with is introducing two pucks to make games more exciting.  Another one could be making it legal to hit the referees. Both comments received a like from what looked like the official Malmo Nighthawks X account, but later it was discovered the like did not come from the official X account but from a fake account.

VHL, as a league, has to be monitoring closely what is going on in Malmo. It remains to be seen what kind of impact Sparks being named as the captain will have on the ice as Malmo start their regular season today with an away game against Moscow.

Article Review:  I love this article.  It is fun, yet sincere.  The use of random real life examples of historical norms that many believe should never be questioned provides a great backdrop to the questioning of a goalie as captain.  Adding a little toilet humor (urinal) into the mix drags this media spot tote lowest levels making it awesome in doing it.  Great job, great article.  Keep up the great work.

I was just scrolling through social media and thought I saw an Ash Sparks for US President post.  Today captain, tomorrow POTUS.

They are here to ruin your fun by disrespecting the traditions and making anyone watching feel as uncomfortable as possible.

jRuutu reacted to Spartan in S92 Moscow Menace Captains
Well it's certainly been one of the offseasons of all time. Lot of fun stuff happened around Christmas time with the league showing up in force to raise money for various charities. The extra time in the offseason also gave our young team a lot of time to develop a bit more and get ready to try and make a splash in the EU this season. While we lost some talented players, we were able to lean on our strong prospect pool and future asset pool to replenish our stocks and come out strong.

    First Alternate - Axle Gunner - @Steve

I typically don't give my AGM's player a leadership role and a letter, but it's difficult not to do so for someone as involved and vocal as Steve and Gunner. There's no question that this team is being built with Gunner as one of its key focal points, and he has a good share of input already behind the scenes as the AGM. He'll be expected to take a significant step forward to becoming one of the top players in the VHL this season. I hope that his leadership and leading by example mentality translates to our team succeeding on the ice as well as off the ice!

Second Alternate - Obuz Schneider Canet du Bocage - @Grape

OSCB is back for his sophomore season and also receives the A for a second time. He's still the de facto leader on our blue line, this time one of the more veteran faces in the room with two rookies in Leif Reingaard and Celise Pereira joining the team. Nils Andersson has also swapped positions from winger to defense, so there'll be some responsibility for OSCB to help facilitate a lot of adjustment in the defense corps. We'll be hoping that the Frenchman can take a big step forward in his sophomore year and help shore up our defense while driving offense from the back end.

    Captain - Left Alone - @okochastar

The most veteran member of the team, and one who has shown a lot of loyalty to the organization as well by sticking it out through the rebuild, Left Alone has been selected as the captain for S92! He's proven to be one of our best players on the ice and passed up on the opportunity to play for a contender in the past to help our young players in their development phases. This season, expectations are sky high for our star duo of Alone and Gunner to see if they can drive Moscow's offense and the team into the playoffs.

Congrats to all named to the leadership team!
