oilmandan got a reaction from Tagger in TSN 1260 August spotlight on the VHLM: Dan Wilinsky
With the summer of the Edmonton Oilers making it look like it'll be another year fighting for the top of the draft lottery, TSN 1260 will be doing a monthly spotlight on the VHLM. This month we caught up with Ottawa Lynx rookie Dan Wilinsky, who is in preparation for the upcoming season and next years VHL draft.

Good afternoon Dan, and thanks for joining us. Well get right into it. How's the summer gone so far? It's been a pretty whirlwind summer with winning the Memorial Cup, signing with Ottawa and skipping the NHL draft. Have you had a chance to relax? Or has it been all pedal to the metal?

Thanks for having me. It has been a pretty wild summer. Winning the Mem Cup was amazing. We had a great team this year and everything seemed to click for us down the stretch. I'm very thankful to win that in my final year.

There really hasn't been much time for much else. The family managed to go to Canmore for a few days and tour around a little, but that's been about all.

As for the NHL draft and signing with Ottawa, it was a tough decision but with the another possible lockout coming up I didn't feel it was a smart call on my part to get caught in that being so early in my pro career. I felt it would have really stunted my development and hurt me going forward. Ottawa's management team came up to me about a week ago with a great offer for this season and an awesome plan for what the team wants to accomplish this year, so it was hard to turn down. We're definitely set up for a successful season and I know were all chomping at the bit to get started.

With that, how's camp gone with the Lynx? You missed the draft and were late getting started. Has that affected anything?

Camp has been great so far. Its a fun bunch to be around, and it makes working hard easy with such a good group. I'm not too worried about missing a bit of time yet. I was working out with the Raiders rookies back in Prince Albert, so I was still on the ice every day. It's been an easy transition to being in Ottawa. The coaches, staff and really everyone has been very welcoming and helping getting me up to speed on what we want to accomplish here and the great history of the franchise.

Sounds like you've got a great setup in Ottawa. What are your personal expectations for the year?

I've never been a big fan of concrete expectations for myself because the team has to come first. So far though I've clicked real well with my new linemates, I just hope to be able to contribute every night. Although scoring 30 or 40 goals is never a bad thing!

Well hopefully it's another great year for you, and for the Lynx. We'll be watching once the Oilers are out of the playoffs by Halloween. Thanks again and we look forward to having you on again!

    PRINCE ALBERT (WHL)

AFTER COMPLETING A MEMORIAL CUP CHAMPIONSHIP IN HIS 17 YEAR OLD SEASON WITH THE PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS, DAN WILINSKY, SIGNED A MINOR PRO DEAL WITH THE OTTAWA LYNX. HE DECIDED TO SKIP THE NHL DRAFT AND PURSUE HIS HOCKEY DREAMS WITH THE UPSTART VHL. HIS SIGNING CAUSED LITTLE FAN FARE, BUT DAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN UNDERDOG. HE HOPES TO HAVE A SOLID SEASON IN A DEPTH ROLE ON A STACKED LYNX TEAM TO HELP HIS DRAFT STOCK FOR THE VHL DRAFT NEXT SEASON.

    PROS
WILINSKY IS GIFTED WITH AN ELITE LEVEL SHOT, THAT HE ADMITS WORKING ON, IN HIS PARENTS BASEMENT. ACCORDING TO HIS FAMILY THE CLOTHES DRYERS HAVE A VERY DANGEROUS EXISTENCE AND NOT A LONG LIFESPAN. HE OFTEN OVER MATCHED COMPETITION WITH THE ACCURACY AND POWER IN HIS RELEASE. COMPARABLE: JOHN LECLAIR

GROWING UP, DAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE BEST AND FASTEST SKATER ON HIS CLUBS. ENTERING INTO THE VHLM, HE WILL FIND HIS SPEED WILL HAVE TO BE MORE OF A WEAPON AND WORK ON IT EVEN HARDER AS HE NO LONGER WILL BE ABLE TO SKATE HIS WAY OUT OF TROUBLE. DAN GETS TO TOP SPEED IN NO MORE THAN 3 STRIDES AND GIVES OPPOSING DEFENDERS FITS WHEN HE GETS GOING THROUGH THE NEUTRAL ZONE. COMPARABLE: MIKE MODANO

EVER SEEN A PLAYER STICK HANDLE IN AN ACTUAL PHONE BOOTH. DAN CAN. AND HE CAN MAKE IT LOOK EASY. MORE THAN A FEW OPPONENTS HAVE FOUND THEMSELVES TIED UP IN KNOTS TRYING TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE PUCK, WHEN WILINSKY STARTS TO DANGLE. COMPARABLE: PAVEL BURE

    CONS
DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE. THAT SEEMS TO BE A WORD DAN CANT GET HIS HEAD AROUND. ITS ALMOST AS THOUGH HE CANT HEAR THE WHISTLE AND CONTINUTES WITH THE ROUGH STUFF. HE NEEDS TO WORK ON NOT LETTING OPPONENTS GET UNDER HIS SKIN, AND TAKE HIS FOCUS OFF HIS OFFENSIVE ABILITIES

I DO REALLY BELIEVE DAN HAS NO IDEA OF HIS OWN END OF THE ICE. SOMETHING HE WILL DESPERATELY NEED TO WORK ON AT THE PRO LEVEL. NOT ONE TO VENTURE PAST HIS OWN FACEOFF CIRCLES, HE SEEMS OVERMATCHED AND SOMETIMES UNWILLING TO PLAY DEFENCE.

HES STILL GROWING INTO HIS FRAME AND HIS STRENGTH WILL NEED SOME WORK AT THE NEXT LEVEL. DAN NEEDS TO FIND A GYM BUDDY AND MAKE THE TEAM FACILITIES HIS SECOND HOME. HE HAS A GOOD BUILD BUT JUST NEEDS TO WORK ON THAT ASPECT MORE. HES GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT SO FAR BUT PLAYING WITH GROWN MEN WILL CHANGE THAT.

oilmandan reacted to Tagger in VHLM Newsletter - Second Edition
Hi there and welcome to another edition of the VHLM Newsletter, a series of articles that will be posted on the VHL forums every Tuesday to let you know exactly what’s going on in the league, how you can earn more points for your player and some extra tips to help you on your way!

Like last time, I’d like to kick things off by telling you all about the VHL Discord. A lot of you are already in this and can probably attest to how helpful it’s been, but if you aren’t in it already you should definitely give it a shot, especially if you have any questions about the league as that will be the quickest place to get them answered! For those of you wondering why this wasn’t sent by PM like last time, some members voiced concerns about a mass PM being sent as they’d be tagged in to receive responses that may not relate to them. So instead, we’ve moved to the forums and I’ll make sure to keep tagging all of you whenever a new one pops up! Finally, some of this newsletter will re-tread on old ground as, with this being a VHLM newsletter, there will inevitably be new members reading this for the first time that won’t be aware of what was in previous newsletters. So what I’ll do is put a bold *NEW* next to any information specifically made for this newsletter so players who have read these before know where to go to find the new info!

    What’s Going On? *NEW*
    -          The VHLM Season is just about to kick off! The first games will be posted in the S62 Games forum within VHLM Games Discussion, so you can either keep an eye out for new posts there or, if you want to be alerted on the forum as to when the games are played, you can click HERE to get a notification when the first games are played!
    -          We’ve had a lot of new members create players since we originally sent the first PM and while they did get a copy of this, I’d like to issue a welcome to the VHL to Joobles, DaftRaincloud, Russell Jerome, DonaldJWafer, LordTony, KyleS56, Kian Lopushinsky, RickRandals, Cornflakers, nicolas01, 28_stab_wounds, Nyr1994, Oilmandan and joeyboucher1 and happy returns to Frank and ChrisF who are returning to the VHL after a period of absence. Best of luck with your new VHL players!
    -          The first series of S63 Draft Rankings have been posted! There will be two sets of rankings over the course of the season; a Weekly Ranking where I will give more in-depth information on some of the players in the class and the Live Rankings which are updated daily. Keep updating your TPE to rise up the ranks!

    Unique Point Task Opportunities *NEW*
    -          Today is the last week you can claim the Doubles Week from the VHL’s 11th Birthday. A doubles week means that if you submit a point task this week or have submitted a point task previously and have yet to claim this bonus, you can claim an extra uncapped 6 TPE! To claim this double week on the portal, copy the link to the 11th Birthday thread. Then in the player management, go to Claim Other TPE, select this week (or the week you submitted your Point Task), paste the link to the Birthday thread with the description “11th Birthday Doubles Week” and set the TPE to 6. It should look like this:

    -          With the season set to start soon, this is likely the last day you’ll have to submit for the Yearly Award Predictions. If you submit your predictions on the portal for who you think will win each VHL Award, at the end of the season you will receive 1 TPE for every correct answer! If you aren’t confident with who will do a good job in the VHL, feel free to copy my answers, which you can see by clicking on Tagger in the previously submitted entries.
    -          If you were drafted by a VHL team, you are able to claim 10 TPE by posting in your team’s training camp, you can find them in HERE

    Recruitment *NEW*
Recruiting new members to the league not only helps the league by filling out team’s rosters, but it also sets you up to earn some lucrative TPE! To find out more about the rewards for recruiting members, go HERE. On top of that, there is a 1 uncapped TPE reward for posting a VHL advert on another website that can be earned every week.

Weekly Capped Point Task Opportunities (You Can Earn Up To 12 TPE From The Following)
    -          You can submit either a Media article of 500 words, a Graphic or a ten minute Podcast for 6 TPE. If you don’t have time to submit for any of these this week though, there is Welfare available to claim for at least 4 TPE.
    -          You can submit either a 150 word article/Player Card for 2 TPE or you can submit a five minute Podcast for 3 TPE.
    -          You can get a maximum of 2 TPE by answering and asking questions in the Press Conferences. If you are short of answers, you can answer questions in the VHLM Press Conference for 2 TPE.
    -          You can receive a maximum of 2 TPE by reviewing other people’s Media/Graphics/Podcasts. Check out the guide to reviewing HERE.

    Uncapped Point Task Opportunities
    -          There is 2 TPE to be earned from posting in this week’s Practice Facility
    -          The lottery gives you a chance of winning 3 uncapped TPE this week and enters you into a monthly draw for even bigger prizes!
    -          You can submit a 500 word Rookie Profile for 8 TPE and a 1000 word Biography for 10 TPE. These two are one time only point tasks.

Tagger’s Tip of the Week – Point Tasks On The Go! *NEW*

Out of the three point task categories, Podcasts are the ones that are submitted the least, but there are some added bonuses to podcasts that aren’t available for media writers and graphic artists. One of those is that the VHL Radio (the podcast equivalent of the VHL.com article/Player Card) is worth 3 TPE rather than the 2 TPE the other alternatives are, and it only requires five minutes of talking to reach the required amount to be eligible for the rewards. The other bonus is that if you are someone who drives to work, you can record a podcast on your drive! This it what veteran member @der meister does, and he’s submitted over 180 full length podcasts along with several VHL radio submissions, so clearly it’s a good use of his driving time! So if you’re someone who looks at point tasks and thinks that they may not have the time to submit one, why not try podcasting on your way to work?

That concludes another edition of the VHLM Newsletter! Like last time, if you have any topics that you would like to be brought up next time, let me know in the comments below!
