WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- It appears Yukon Rush General Manager Austin Gow decided to treat two of his players, defenceman Donald Draper and forward Konstantin Azhishchenkov, to a night on the town this past weekend. Possibly a celebration about Gow's big trade deadline blockbuster?

GM Gow, who is usually quiet and reserved, was heard yelling "YUKON 2 GUD" on several occasions. You may be wondering just how someone goes about yelling '2' instead of 'to'. So are we. Anyways, as the night progressed we saw all three Yukon celebs do everything from sign autographs, lick floors, throw shoes, and even fight with each other.

The night concluded with Draper passed out on a filthy bar floor, Azhishchenkov in the slammer for the night following an altercation with some Ukranian prick, and GM Gow....well...we'll just show you a video captured by one of our dedicated reporters:

    Can Yukon Hold On?

So far, here in Season 37 of the VHLM, the Yukon Rush have shown pure dominance throughout the league. Currently in the North American league, the Rush are a decisive twenty points in front of their closest competitor, the Gladiators. Now, this level dominance certainly doesn't echo throughout the whole league; the Bern Royals are only a meager 1 point behind the Rush and their record against each other is 3-2 in favor of Yukon. Despite Bern being right on the Rush's tail, analysts have said time and time again that the Rush are going all the way. It's also important to note that Yukon and Bern aren't the only contenders - Turku, Minot, Bratslava are all very strong teams as well. However, if someone were to ask me who was going to be the next Founder's Cup champions, I would say Yukon. Every time. And here's why:

Konstantin Jaroslav Azhishchenkov (KJA): KJA is an 18 year old Russian who is currently Yukon's first-line center. GM Austin Gow has been quoted on numerous occasions saying the KJA is certainly the most well rounded offensive player on Yukon and possibly the entire league. With 33 goals and 38 assists, KJA's stats certainly reflect Mr. Gow's statements. This season, KJA has emerged as something that is possibly far more important than whatever stats he racks up - a leader. After being named as an assistant captain at the start of the season, which was a surprise to a lot of people, KJA has been instrumental in rallying and motivating the entire Yukon bench.

KJA gets slightly over enthusiastic at times.

Triton Jackson: Jackson is an American-born defenceman. Standing at a whopping 6'8, Triton Jackson is hard to miss. Well, you would think he would be hard to miss. However, in my opinion, Jackson is an extremely underrated player. He has been leading Yukon's defensive line up this season and, largely due to him, the Rush have the lowest goals against average in the league. It's not just his skill, either, this season Triton Jackson has taken on the role of 'mentor' for young defencemen Don Draper. They now play on the first line defensive pairing together and are, so far, displaying great chemistry. Now, Jackson and Draper are two of the leaders in the +/- category throughout the league with +70 and +66, respectively.

Yukon D-man Triton Jackson lettin' one go.

Kimmo Salo: Salo is the Finnish goalie that can be credited Yukon's success up to this point. At this point, Salo leads the league in save percentage, goals against average, shutouts, wins, and penalty shot percentage. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is safe to say that if Yukon did not have Salo, this season would be telling a very different story. He went 1st overall in this years VHLM dispersal draft as well as 7th overall in this years VHL Entry draft. Salo, however, is quite modest with his success; stating "I just go out there and work my ass off. Thats it".

    Salo doing his thing.

While there are other players on Yukon who have played a huge part in their success this season, these are a few of the top dogs in my opinion. If they do win the championship, we can be assured that these 3 will be at center stage.

    Rush to the Playoffs

It’s official ladies and gentlemen, the Yukon Rush have already clinched a spot in the Season 37 VHLM playoffs. After only 40 games, the Rush are guaranteed at least the third spot in the North American Conference. Barring a drastic meltdown, Yukon should have the first spot in their conference locked down for the rest of the year. This article will be highlighting why Yukon has had so much success so far.

    Chemistry

The primary objective of hockey is to score more goals than your opponent. Yukon has had no problem scoring goals this year, as their 203 goals are only behind Minot and Bern for the season. The Rush use two balanced lines which both have excellent passers and scorers. Yukon’s first line features Russian-born Konstantin Azhishchenkov at center, Kai Randal at left wing, and Queen Latifa at right wing. This first line has a lot of chemistry due to each player’s strengths complimenting each other well. Randal is the natural-born passer of the group, KJA is arguably the most well-rounded offensive player on the team, and Queen Latifa has the best shot on the team. Yukon’s second line also features excellent chemistry, but is different from the first line in that they have more defensive and physical ability. While all three players on the second line have great offensive ability, their play in the defensive zone is what makes them stand out. Lars Strummer centers the second line, and is arguable the best two-way forward on the Rush. Jeevan Samuelson brings solid defensive ability along with some ferocious physicality. Lastly, Bennett Wahl is a jack-of-all-trades forward who also is an excellent pest and draws a lot of penalties.

From left to right: Kai Randal, KJA, Queen Latifa

    Stopping Goals

When Yukon drafted goaltender Kimmo Salo with the first pick of the draft, they held lofty expectations for him. So far, Salo has exceeded expectation as he has the best goals against average (1.65) and save percentage (0.195%) in the league. However, it must be noted that Salo only has faced 739 shots this season, which is less than any other full-time starting goalie this season. These low shot totals can be attributed to the excellent defensive work in front of Salo. Yukon’s first pairing defensive unit features Triton Jackson and Don Draper. Jackson is a VHLM veteran who possesses the best offensive skills of all Yukon defenseman along with excellent defensive skills. Draper is Yukon’s defenseman with the most potential but is currently a raw player. Management has decided that Draper needs as much playing time as possible to maximize his potential, and roughly half way through the season Draper has already made a lot of strides since the beginning of the season. Currently, Draper has excellent defensive abilities along with a great slap shot, but his passing needs a lot of work as he often turns the puck over. Yukon’s second pairing features two VHLM veterans who are both excellent two-way defenseman. Gabrial Johnson is a great clear the porch defenseman who can hold his own in front of the net while also giving some excellent breakout passes. Frederick Ernst is playing out of position for Yukon, as his natural position is center. However, Yukon’s forward depth was already too deep, and Ernst has enough defensive ability to become a full-time defenseman.

    2 New Draftees Added
    12 Players Updated TPE
    31 Total Draftees

Today we are going to look at three new players/members first generation players poised to break into the VHL elite or become an asterisk in our long history.

    D – Don Draper – Draper
Draper joined the league in early March and has already passed the 60 TPE barrier (over 80 in the next update).  To be successful in the VHL you must at its core create a player and earn TPE.  That is the simplest form of actually being part of the VHL make a player and then try to make him better.  To really succeed in the VHL and take advantage of all the opportunities available you must become part of the larger community that is VHL.

Draper is taking every opportunity to succeed in the VHL which includes fantasy zone, FREE TPE Announcement, VHLM Practice Facility, and so on.  Much more than just getting the TPE Draper is active in the other parts of the league Walking Dead Thread,  Happy/Mad Thread, and Video Game Thread are all examples of where he has posted.  The final step to becoming a true VHLer is getting a job yet another thing Draper is trying to do.  He is definitely on his way to becoming not only a great player but a great member.

Member Comparison – STZ/Green hit the league on all cylinders and hasn’t turned back since.

    F - Percy Miller – Coach D
Coach D joined at the end of February he is a great example of a new member.  It is that new car smell type of thing he has tons of energy and radiates enthusiasm.  Sometimes that can be misplaced and the drive to get started caused a minor controversy over a misunderstanding.   Basically a new member joining during a down time and unable to get all the answers immediately to all the questions a new member has.

He has nearly 100 posts already and can be found in numerous off-topic threads and attempting to claim all the free/easy TPE he can.  It looks like he could be one of the new age welfare players who doesn’t always do a graphic or media spot.  However if he continues to grow as part of the community and the community embraces him we might have a new member.

Member Comparison  - EaglesFan he is potentially a fence active member that just needs to be guided.

    F – Kristoffer Ruud – ByrdeMan
Joining at the beginning of March ByrdeMan initially looked like a mid-first round draft prospect.  He did VHLM Practice, a media spot, and even his Rookie Profile something that many first gens push back till they are more into the league.  The problem is he only has 13 forum posts and hasn’t logged in for two weeks.  This is the opposite effect of what we saw with Coach D above.  A new member who is full steam ahead then suddenly disappears.

Having shown potential effort and ability as a VHL member this is someone we should try to get back.  If anyone knows him from somewhere we should be attempting to keep him as part of our community and see if we can’t help him in some way.  Why start out so strong then completely disappear?

Member Comparison – Not quite accurate but Al Wilson blasted out of the gates to a first overall selection only to completely disappear.

Stay tuned next week as we start to dig deeper into the draft.  We'll be well over 1/2 through the season maybe our 1st mock draft?

VHLM - One Hundred Game Mark

We have just hit the 100 game mark here in Season 37 of the VHLM. Thus far it has been a very exciting season but, hopefully, the best has yet to come. Here, I will give you a quick update of the top 5 teams in the standings so far.

    Standings
This season we certainly have a few powerhouses, as well as a few underdogs.

    1. Rush - The Rush are currently leading the league with a record of 19-1 (38 points). So far, the only team able to get the edge of the Rush was Moscow in the second game of the season.

    2. Royals - The Royals are just barely behind the Rush with a record of 18-2, or 36 points. Although one of their losses was to the Rush, Yukon shouldn't be too comfortable in 1st because the Royals are right behind em'.

    3. Watchmen - The Watchmen have a lot of talen on their squad, so it's no surprise that their hot on the Rush/Royals tail with a record of 16-4, 32 points.

    4. Gladiators - The Gladiators have a bit more of a gap to fill than what we've seen so far, but it's definitely not a landslide by any means. Currently they've got a record of 13-7, 26 points.

    5. Outlaws - The Outlaws cleaned house at the draft this year, so it's given that they're up here too. So far they're record stands at 12-6-2, also 26 points. With all young talent they got at the draft, there is nowhere for the Outlaws to go but up.

Rookie Profile - Donald Draper (D)

    Name: Donald Draper
    Hometown: Stratford, Ontario
    Age: 20
    Position: Defense
    Number: 77
    Team: Yukon Rush
    Player Type: Two-Way Defensemen

    Entrance to the VHLM

The story behind Don Draper’s arrival to the VHLM is an interesting one. While I won’t get into too much detail in this profiling, I will say that after announcing his entry to the Season 37 VHLM Dispersal Draft only 24 hours prior to the draft, he was selected in the first-round by the Yukon Rush. This was a huge surprise to many analysts and spectators watching the draft. Officials from within the Rush organization later stated that when they looked at Draper they saw “dedication, potential, and passion.”

    Play Style

Donald Drapers play style is extremely similar to that of Scott Stevens, former captain of the New Jersey Devils over in the NHL, in the sense that they are both offensively capable yet defensively explosive. We have even seen Draper perform Stevens’ trademark hit a couple of times this season, making guys think twice about crossing center ice with their heads down.
However, like Stevens, Draper certainly isn't all hits. The combination of Drapers speed, strength, and big shot make him more than capable on the offensive front. While we haven’t fully seen Draper in offense-mode yet this season, as he has often been acting as a stay-at-home defensemen (presumably at the direction of the Rush coaching staff), looking at his past career we see huge potential for this two-way defensemen in the offensive zone as he progresses as a player.

Draper leveling a guy in the corner.

    VHLM Season 37

As previously mentioned, Don Draper was drafted by the Yukon Rush in the Season 37 VHLM Dispersal Draft. So far this season we have seen Draper play impeccable defensive hockey, but not much else. Although we certainly expect to see Draper break out as an offensive player at some point in his career, it is clear that now is not the time. This is probably a good thing. He needs to establish himself as a solid, top-notch defender before he shows what he can do in the offensive zone.

Season 37 Stats (As of March 17th, 2014)
    Goals: 2
    Assists: 3
    Points: 5
    +/-: 20
    Hits: 30

As you can see by the stats posted above, Draper’s offensive stats are meager. However, you can see by his plus/minus that he is a force to be reckoned with defensively. I believe Draper is aiming to become someone who his teammates know they can rely on before he starts taking risks.

    Pros/Cons

To finish this report off, I will give a brief summary of some of the pros and cons that come along with Donald Draper.

    Pros

Skating: Donald Draper has a great stride. He’s fast enough to catch any player who manages to sneak behind him and his partner, yet he has enough endurance to beat other players to the puck every single time.

Defense: As I have said many times throughout this report, Draper is one of the most solid guys you will find on defense. He has the strength and hitting power to take out his opponents, or he has the long reach of his flawless poke-check when he wants to play it safe. He holds the blue line and shuts down the other team. You can’t ask for a better d-man than that.

Dedication: This is one thing I didn’t mention above. Donald Draper’s dedication to his teammates, his coaches, and his progress as a player is almost overwhelming. This is possibly the main reason he was drafted by the Rush; they need someone they can count on to be dedicated to improvement and growth.

    Cons

Temper: While Draper definitely has his pros, his temper is certainly not one of them. We have already seen him allow the other team to get under his skin a few times this season and cause penalties as a result of his lashing out. I’m confidant Draper, being the conscientious guy that he is, will work to get his temper under-control for the benefit of his team.

Sore Loser: In hockey, passion is usually a great thing. However, it comes with its downsides. Draper is known to let his passion get the best of him, particularly after a tough loss. His teammates have said that he often won’t even speak in the dressing room after loss. Draper better start being a little more positive after a loss if he hopes to make it to the VHL.

Quiet: Don is not known for being the most vocal guy in the room. He often keeps his thoughts and input to himself, which could damage him in the future is he doesn’t sufficiently communicate with his coaches/teammates.
