TacticalHammer reacted to Alex in VSN Presents: Top 10 Defensemen
Hi everyone, and welcome to the second installment of our Top 10 series; today we will be looking at the top 10 defensemen in the VHL right now. All of these defensemen are had remarkable seasons on both sides of the puck and are a major reason for their teams success. While you are here be sure to check out some of the other recent VSN posts!

    TPE Max Earners #26-28 | VHLM Illustrated Edition 3 5/15/2022 | Top 10 Forwards

    #10 - David Tavau @Ahma
The captain and top defenseman of Davos, David Tavau continues to be a top defensemen late in his career including career highs in goals, shots, and shots blocked this season. Of note Tavau recorded 28 goals this season, currently 3rd among all defensemen. This was a significant part of Tavau’s second consecutive season recording a point-per-game with 74 points this season. Davos’s future is bright and Tavau’s veteran presence will be a warm site until his retirement in 2 seasons.

    #9 - Hari Singh Nalwa @Dil
Part of the Vancouver dynasty, Hari Singh Nalwa found a new home in Warsaw for this season where they played very well. Nalwa recorded 23 goals, and 58 assists for 81 points, leading Warsaw defensemen in scoring. Nalwa also currently has 73 hits and 157 shots blocked, while a step back from last season, it still shows that Nalwa is solid on both sides of the puck.

    #8 - Jan Hlozek @Bojovnik
Jan Hlozek has been one of the most consistent players in the VHL for some time now, recording their 4th straight point-per-game season, and never having less than 50 points and 100 shots blocked in their career. In this past season Hlozek elected to sign with Moscow and immediately stepped in as a top 2 defensemen alongside Hard Markinson, a tandem that is a main reason for their success this season.

    #7 - Tom Eagles @Greg_Di
The Season 82 Jake Wylde Trophy winner, Tom Eagles had another solid defensive season in their first season not in a Calgary jersey with 205 hits, and 119 shots blocked. Additionally, Eagles showed some great offensive play this season with 30 goals! Eagles also added 61 assists for a total of 91 points, the second highest point total of their career. Retiring after this season, Eagles will look to continue their play in the playoffs and bring the Continental Cup to London.

    #6 - Bo Johansson @Shindigs
Our first and only rookie on the list, Bo Johansson came into the VHL and made a statement, recording 10 goals and 71 assists for a total of 81 points this season. Johansson was also solid defensively with 87 hits and 170 shots blocked. At this point we can safely say that Johansson will likely take home the honor of being the VHL’s top rookie of season 83.

    #5 - Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. @TacticalHammer
Our second London defensemen on the list, could find their way into the running for a couple of awards come the end of the playoffs as their play on both sides of the puck has been solid. With 81 points, 211 hits, and 187 shots blocked Fizzlebeef is a prime candidate for the Jake Wylde Trophy as the top defensive defensemen. The tandem of Eagles and Fizzlebeef has done wonders for London and with any luck they’ll be a main reason for London’s success going forward this season.

    #4 - Hard Markinson @STZ
A perennial award nominee, Hard Markinson took a small step back this season with only 92 points and 17 goals. With that being said those totals are still high for a defenseman in the post attribute change era. Markinson also continued to be solid defensively with 107 shots blocked and 237 hits. MArkinson is and will be one of the main reasons for Moscow’s success for the past several seasons and until their retirement.

    #3 - Jerome Reinhart @MexicanCow123
Following a last-minute position change, Reinhart has been a bright spot for New York this season and currently leads all defensemen in goals with 35 and is 3rd in points with 102. Reinhart has also set career highs in penalty minutes and shots blocked with 88 and 241 respectively. Reinhart will possibly be traded this offseason and only time will tell if they will return to their cup winning ways.

    #2 - Aurlien Moreau @Frank
Aurlien Moreau will likely win a few awards this season as they currently lead the league in assists and lead defensemen in points by a considerable margin with 92 assists and 112 points respectively. On the defensive side of the puck Moreau has been good with an even 100 hits and 136 shots blocked. Moreau will likely continue this play in the playoffs in a first-round match-up against the surprise team of the season, the Calgary Wranglers.

    #1 - Battre Sandstrom @Acydburn
Battre Sandstrom has been incredible this season and will more than likely win the Sterling Labatte Trophy this season as the top defenseman in the VHL as they have been incredible on both sides of the puck with 28 goals, 104 points, 254 hits, and 128 shots blocked. Sandstrom retires after this season and has certainly made their bid for the Hall Of Fame, the only thing missing is a Continental Cup.

On the Bubble: Hulk Hogan 2 @Hogan, Erlantz Jokinen @jRuutu, Tui Sova @v.2, Asher Reinhart @rjfryman, and Poopy Peepants @JardyB10

    Wildcard Series

     Chicago (4) vs. D.C. (5)

After a wild season D.C. will look to find their stride in the playoffs. This series could be a close one as Chicago’s rookies led by The Board Game Clue On Skates @MubbleFubbles and Bo Johansson @Shindigs, both of who were top scoring rookies with 82 and 81 points respectively. On D.C.’s side of things they will look for their offense to take a big step forward and will be relying heavily on Taylor Mourning @scoop. The season series was dominated by D.C. seeing them win 5 of the 6 matchups.

    Prediction: D.C. in 4 (best of 5)
VSN vote: CHI 1, DCD 7

     Prague (4) vs. London (5)

After being in a nail biter of a playoff race, these two teams came out on top and both have something to prove. London’s defense will be key for them to win this series, in part their top 2 defensemen in Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. @TacticalHammer and Tom Eagles @Greg_Di, but also Cole Pearce @N0HBDY will need to be on top of their game. For Prague it’s all in their offense, led by Reylynn Reinhart @Ricer13, Luc Tessier @KC15, and Baby Bob @Baby Boomer who finished the season with 99, 83, and 83 points respectively. In the regular season Prague won 4 of the 5 matchups, although most games were close. This series should be a close one, however the consensus was that Prague would take it likely due to David Davis @Josh shutting down the London offense.

Prediction: Prague in 5 (best of 5)
VSN vote: PRG 5, LDN 0

    Conference Semi-Finals

     Toronto (2) vs. Calgary (3)

After what we could call a miracle season, Calgary enters a tough series against Toronto. This series will be focused on two specific players, Saku Kotkakoivu @DollarAndADream who finished the season with the league lead in points with 122 and Paul Atreides @Mr_Hatter who was the sole player in the league to break the 60 goal mark. These two players will need to continue their play in what could be one of the highest scoring series we will see. Calgary won the season series 4-2, however we should see Toronto come alive in the playoffs and make their way to the conference finals.

    Prediction: Toronto in 7
VSN vote: TOR 5, CGY 3

     Seattle (1) vs. D.C. (5)

Seattle has had a remarkable regular season, which saw them finish tied for 1st place in the league with Moscow, only to have less ROW. Seattle will likely look to make a statement in this series to show that they are the top team in the North American Conference. Seattle’s offense will need to be firing on all cylinders if they are to best top rookie goaltender Bubbles Utonium  @fishy who finished the season with a respectable 0.916 SV%. Seattle is the only team that had two 50 goal scorers in the regular season with Zeedayno Chara @Jubis and AJ Williams @ajwllmsn, both of who will carry the Seattle offense in this series. Seattle swept the regular season series and we can expect them to do the same here.

    Prediction: Seattle in 4
VSN vote: SEA 4, DCD 2

     Riga (2) vs. Warsaw (3)

For Warsaw to win this series they will have to figure out a way to shut down Riga’s big 3 of Alex Johnston @Alex, Anze Miklavz @kelvi, and Battre Sandstrom @Acydburn who were the 3 highest scoring players in the entire European Conference. That starts with their goalie, Wumbo @Fire Fletcher who had a 0.920 SV% this season and offseason acquisition Hari Singh Nalwa @Dil who led the team’s defense in scoring with 83 points. In the regular season Riga won 5 of the 6 games, with Tobias Reinhart @Spaz picking up a shutout in 3 of the games.

    Prediction: Riga in 4
VSN vote: RIG 8, WAR 0

     Moscow (1) vs. Prague (4)

Moscow has come back with a vengeance this season after 3 consecutive finals losses. Prague does have a decent chance in this series, although they didn’t win a single one of the seven game season series as Moscow would pick up all 14 possible points. Prague’s biggest advantage here comes with their depth and season 82 top goal scorer Darth Kaprizov @Darth Kaprizov. For Moscow they will need Hard Markinson @STZ and Duncan Idaho @OrbitingDeath to continue what they have done in the playoffs already. This should be an interesting one and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Prague steal a game or 2.

    Prediction: Moscow in 5
VSN vote: MOS 5, PRG 2

    Conference Finals

     Seattle (1) vs. Toronto (2)

This series is one that many were looking forward to all season, Seattle and Toronto have had a close regular season with Seattle winning three of the five games. Seattle’s advantage in this series starts with the depth on their blueline with Hulk Hogan 2 @Hogan, Max Torq @Steve, Mikhail Kovalchuk @Banackock, and Sven Eightnine @BarzalGoat. Toronto will likely come into this series depending on Aurlien Moreau @Frank and Paul Atreides for their offense and will lean heavily on Oskar Lindbergh @Doomsday between the pipes. This series could go either way and should be one to watch.

    Prediction: Seattle in 7
VSN vote: SEA 6, TOR 1

     Moscow (1) vs. Riga (2)

A rematch of last season's European Conference finals, this season should be a close one as these teams were back and forth for the entire regular season as they split the regular season series 3 games a piece with Riga having the slight advantage in goals with 20 compared to Moscow’s 17. This could prove to either be a defensive battle with Tobias Reinhart and Papa Emeritus @Beketov going toe-to-toe, or an offensive show with both teams having dominant forward groups. We have Moscow getting the win in this series with a slight edge in goal.

    Prediction: Moscow in 7
VSN vote: MOS 4, RIG 3

    Continental Cup Finals

     Moscow (1) vs. Seattle (1)

For the first time in 4 seasons we do not have a Moscow vs. Vancouver finals. Seattle was dominant in the regular season winning 3 of the 4 games and outscoring Moscow 17 to 6 in the last 3 games between the two teams. For Seattle they will need likely top goaltender Em Em Flex @oilmandan to continue to shutdown Moscow’s offense, in particular perennial Boulet Trophy winner Duncan Idaho. For Moscow this also comes down to their goalie, Papa Emeritus who will need to figure out a way to stop the Seattle offense. In this matchup we have Moscow losing their 4th straight finals as Seattle will claim yet another Continental Cup.

    Prediction: Seattle in 6
VSN vote: MOS 3, SEA 4

Thank you to everyone for reading and best of luck to each and every team in the playoffs! If you have any predictions of your own feel free to post them in the comments.

Hi everyone and welcome to the post where we will reveal the first set of players to be named to the VHL all-star rosters for the games next weekend! The first round of voting was voted on by members of VSN, and was for 1 player from each team. There will be an additional vote (link at bottom of post) open to everyone to fill out the rosters, to be eligible for this vote a player had to receive at least 1 vote in the VSN vote. In addition, due to concerns raised last season with Dan Dan not making the initial roster selections we have implemented the Dan Dan Rule in which the players that lead the league in goals, points, and points by a defensemen will be automatically put on their conferences team.

TacticalHammer reacted to Alex in VSN Presents: S83 All-Star Skills Competition
    @v.2

Hi everyone, and welcome to the season 83 VHL All-Star Skills Competition. The 4 events are fastest skater, save streak, hardest shot, and all-around (I still couldn't think of a better name). The participants for each event were chosen randomly. For reference and transparency reasons a link to calculations will be included at the end. Also thank you to @Ricer13 and @SpicyGecko for all the graphics!

The fastest skater competition is a test of pure speed as player race to complete 1 lap of the ice surface, the results for this season are...

In the save streak shooters from 1 conference take turns going 1-on-1 with the other conferences goaltenders, a streak can be started at any point, however once a goal is scored after 1 full rotation of players it concludes your attempt. The results for this seasons save streak are...

The best test of shooting possible, in this event each player recieved 3 attempts to put up the fastest shot possible, with only their best counting, and the winner is...

In our final event of the night players have to hit 4 targets with a pass from the far goalline, then skate a lap with a puck before taking a penalty shot on our guest goalie, β-CHI G. For the passing each player got a max of 8 attempts and if they had any targets left received a 5 second penalty (each pass takes 3 seconds), additionally for the penalty shot(s) each attempt takes 5 seconds.
Without further ado the winner of this way too overcomplicated event is...

That concludes our skills competition for season 83! Stay tuned for tomorrow for when the conferences go head to head, and for when our two prospect rosters take the ice!

TacticalHammer reacted to fishy in DCD Donation Drive
    Hey drafons,

During my brief time in the EFL, I played for the lovely @TacticalHammer (do you still check VHL? maybe you'll get an email. anyway, hey ) on the DEATH VALLEY RANGERS, BEST ECFA TEAM. Though I decided that the EFL wasn't for me, I did walk away really inspired by Tac's seasonal donation based on team stats, so I've decided to mimic it with DC.

Truthfully, I've chosen a terrible time to begin this endeavor because stats for the upcoming season are greatly unpredictable. Nonetheless, I'm going to try, learn, and apply the knowledge for following seasons. This season, here's how I'll determine the amount donated (all $ amounts are in USD):

for our defenders: $0.01 for each hit, $0.01 for each shot block
for our forwards: $0.02 for each goal

minimum donation will be $15, maximum will be $30

The skater on our roster with most shots gets to choose where the donation goes. (I changed this from lowest PIM because I don't want an inactive to be chosen 😬) I haven't decided whether we'll include playoff stats if we make it. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

    We'll see how this goes!

TacticalHammer got a reaction from Jubis in Hybrid Attributes are LIVE
Echoing the feedback that it would great to have a +5 or +10 button like the EFL and SBA dashboards do. Clicking the little "+" button over 700 times is a bit tedious.

    Very cool system overall though.

I applied all my TPA and it was smooth and I did get what I tested beforehand in terms of 'real' attributes. A little feedback for a potential improvement for future 'mass application' of TPE (which hopefully will not happen that soon again): Is it possible to allow TPE application in batches (like in SBA for example), rather than clicking for each TPE individually? Or manually enter the targeted amount of TPE applied to each attribute? I mean my 584 TPE were negotiable, but imagine Ryan Kastelic re-applying all his TPE... I know this is complaining on a very high level and you did a good job to transition as smooth as it was. It would be a convenience, that, in view of possible rerolls in the next three seasons, might be worthwhile considering (if technically doable of course). Thanks again to anybody involved for your hard work on this.

TacticalHammer reacted to Spartan in VSN Scouting Presents the S77 VHL Re-Draft
    (graphic by @Ricer13)

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new type of article by VSN Scouting! @MattyIce and I have covered prospect pools quite a lot in the past, done mock drafts every season, and had all sorts of focus on current prospects in the league. However, we wanted to switch things up and turn the clock back a bit, and focus on prospects from four seasons ago. Hindsight is 20/20, so we want to redraft the S77 class and try and see what could have been if teams knew then what they know now.

A couple ground rules as to how we’re doing this redraft:
Matty and I will be doing two separate redrafts, just to see where we agree and disagree and to foster a little bit of discussion. We are not going to be going back in time to what a team may have needed in S77, but rather what a team could use today. This is more of a personal disclaimer, but this is just a fantasy draft and does not directly represent what I would have preferred to happen on draft day (Yes, this is me hinting I picked someone other than my original picks at 1st and/or 3rd overall. Don’t worry, if I had to do it again, I’d do the same thing, but I do gotta show a little love to the objective top player in the class so far, stats-wise).
    Anyways, let’s get into it!

    ---

    1st overall - Moscow Menace - Original Pick: Paul Atreides - C
    Matty’s Pick: Duncan Idaho - @OrbitingDeath  - RW
    Spartan’s Pick: Brendan Telker - @Telkster - LW

Matty: This draft had a very solid top 5 players to choose from, and seriously, anyone could have gotten selected first.  The Moscow Menace had the first and third selections, but unless a serious off-the-board pick was made, they were getting franchise players with those picks.  I’ve selected Duncan Idaho to take the top spot.  He’s proved to be that top line, power forward that all teams hope to have.  With over a point-per-game average and already over 1k hits, and a Stolzy to start off his trophy collection, this man could have some serious hardware coming his way, and he hasn’t even entered his prime yet…

Spartan: This was honestly one of the most difficult picks to redraft for me, partially because this is my own pick, but also because of how great both of the top 2 players in this class have been. Matty has pointed out how great Duncan Idaho has been so far but Brendan Telker has been statistically better, simply lacking the physicality side. Telker is the leader in goals, assists and points and while he doesn’t hit much, he doesn’t take penalties which could be the difference in a close game. An added bonus would be that Telker had a fantastic career in Moscow with Nate Telker so Moscow would simply be bringing back a franchise favorite user. If I had to actually go back and redraft this pick it'd be Idaho 10 times out of 10, but for the sake of this piece and the integrity of it, I have to show Telker some respect for his phenomenal performance.

2nd overall - HC Davos Dynamo - Original Pick: Reylynn Reinhart - D
    Matty’s pick: Brendan Telker - @Telkster - LW
    Spartan’s pick: Duncan Idaho - @OrbitingDeath  - RW

Matty: Telker was selected by Malmo with the 5th pick, but his growth, play and value have massively grown with him getting his breakout season in S78.  He won the Dustin Funk award for most improved player, getting a 40 point improvement in only his second season.  In S79, he would dominate the league in goals with 58, and help lead Malmo to both a Victory Cup and the Continental Cup.  It’s arguable that he and Gunnar Odinsson are each other’s reason to be such dominant players, or could we be looking at the top duo in the league for seasons to come?

Spartan: This is in no means a slight to Reylynn Reinhart who is still one of the best defensemen in the class, and rapidly approaching that title in the league as well. But what Davos severely lacks right now is a secondary scorer to pair with Taro Tsujimoto, and Duncan Idaho is one of the best point scorers in the league right now. Davos has another selection in this draft class with plenty of defensemen, so there shouldn’t be an issue replacing Reinhart, albeit at a bit of a dropoff.

3rd overall - Moscow Menace - Original Pick: Duncan Idaho - RW
    Matty’s Pick: Reylynn Reinhart - @Ricer13 - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Paul Atreides - @Mr_Hatter - C

Matty: In this redraft, I’m going with Reylynn Reinhart to get selected by Moscow with the third pick.  Why?  After selecting Idaho 1st, taking a defensewoman next just makes good sense.  She’s enjoying a breakout year this season with Davos, cementing her place in the league as one of the best going forward.  She’s taken her game to the next level at both ends of the ice, and isn’t shy to dish out the hits either.  Imagine a top pair d-corps of Reinhart and next season's top pick, Hard Markinson?.... That’s a scary thought…

Spartan: I simply can’t pass over our 1C at 3rd overall, who is actually 2nd in the S77 class in points. 3rd in goals as well, he can do a bit of everything on both ends of the ice. Despite Moscow missing the playoffs for 3 years straight after he was drafted, Atreides has a +46 rating, one of the best in the class showing his two-way prowess on the ice. Regardless if Moscow selects Idaho or Telker 1st overall, Atreides would be a perfect center to build a top line around.

4th overall - New York Americans - Original Pick: Zeedayno Chara - D
    Matty’s Pick: Asher Reinhart - @rjfryman - C
    Spartan’s Pick: Reylynn Reinhart - @Ricer13 - D

Matty: New York has had a string of bad luck in recent seasons, but after selecting Red Lite at 1st overall the previous season, envision him playing with a solid centerman, faceoff wizard, Asher Reinhart.  Could their point totals be higher?  Could they have been the top forward duo in the league?  Could they have possibly already won a Cup?...

Spartan: Going with a Reinhart seems to be the consensus here between myself and Matty, but I’m going with the defensewoman Reinhart over the forward Reinhart. Chara hasn’t been a poor selection by any means, but Reylynn slipping down to 4 should be a slam dunk here. She sits 3rd in the class with points, and sports a -23 instead of the -51 that Chara displays, showing a bit more defensive prowess to go along with terrific offense. She has half the penalties of Chara despite having 100 more shots blocked, and only about 200 fewer hits. Both strong defensemen, but Reylynn is the girl to go with.

5th overall - Malmo Nighthawks - Original Pick: Brendan Telker - LW
    Matty’s Pick: Paul Atreides - @Mr_Hatter - C
    Spartan’s Pick: Asher Reinhart - @rjfryman - C

Matty: An unlikely slide would land Atreides in Malmo at 5th, but that doesn’t mean his value is any lower.  He does have the second-most points in the draft class, so maybe he’s the centerman Malmo needed.  It’s possible Malmo could have had that dominant S79 with Atreides and Odinsson up front, but who knows?

Spartan: I agree that Malmo would take a center here, but since I’ve already mocked Atreides, I’ll have Asher Reinhart come over to Malmo to anchor a line with Gunnar Odinsson. Malmo currently has a fantastic first line that features Brendan Telker and Gunnar Odinsson, but they only have one true center on the roster in Jakob Sosa. Adding Reinhart would give them a truly lethal first line.

    6th overall - Toronto Legion - Original Pick: Asher Reinhart - C
    Matty’s Pick: That Dude - @Cornholio - C
    Spartan’s Pick: Zeedayno Chara - @Jubis - D

Matty: Toronto’s pick here had plenty of options to address any need they desired, so I went with That Dude.  He was originally picked 10th by London, but he was the next best centerman on the board.  He’s been a very steady player, quietly improving his craft up to this point.  He’s having his breakout season right now, and he should be a point-per-game player for the rest of his career.

Spartan: Honestly, Toronto could really select anyone right now. Since they selected 3 forwards in the top 5 of the S80 draft and lack many defense prospects in their pool, defense is the way I’m leaning, with the 2nd best defenseman in the class available at 6th overall. Even if Toronto was in the same state today after drafting Chara, the trade market is always much more conducive to moving defensemen than forwards.

7th overall - Calgary Wranglers - Original Pick: Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr - D
    Matty’s Pick: Aurelien Moreau - @Frank - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Aurelien Moreau - @Frank - D

Matty: Moreau was still on the board when Calgary picked Fizzlebeef Jr, but it’s questionable who the better defenseman is.  The only glaring difference between the two is Moreau’s physicality.  Perhaps he would have been a more ideal defensive partner for Tom Eagles, Calgary’s top pick the previous season.  He’s already on his third VHL team and hasn’t hit his prime yet, but he, like most S77 draftees, is having a career season with Moscow.

Spartan: Fizzlebeef Jr may have been the more touted prospect before the S77 draft with his very consistent development, but it's Aurelien Moreau who has outshined him to grab the title of 3rd best defenseman in this class. TPE-wise, he’s second, and having escaped both Helsinki and Toronto who are going through massive rebuilds, is showing why he’s one of the best defensemen in this class while playing for Moscow.

    8th overall - Riga Reign - Original Pick: Jan Hlozek - D
    Matty’s Pick: Jan Hlozek - @Bojovnik - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Druss Deathwalker - @animal74 - RW

Matty: I think Riga got their guy with Hlozek.  Sure, he wasn’t VHL ready at the time, but since joining the Reign in S78, he’s been very solid.  His improvement has been steady and Riga has their defense corps rounded out.  He’s playing at a point per game pace, getting a lot of assists and blocking shots.  Very solid value pick here.

Spartan: Deathwalker wasn’t selected until 11th overall in the actual draft, so this is a nice little bump up for him in the redraft. One thing I’ve always sort of noticed about Riga is that they have too many defensemen. While Hlozek would go here to almost any other team, I don’t think Riga needs another defenseman on their team, and should instead go with the wildly underrated Druss Deathwalker to provide some additional scoring up front. Plus, Deathwalker was VHL ready right off the bat, having played 254 games to Hlozek’s 182, making him the hotter commodity in this redraft.

    9th overall - Helsinki Titans - Original Pick: Aurelien Moreau - D
    Matty’s Pick: Druss Deathwalker - @animal74 - RW
    Spartan’s Pick: Jan Hlozek - @Bojovnik - D

Matty: This guy hits everything, and at the time, probably could’ve helped Helsinki as a rookie in their final seasons as a dominant team.  They came close to a Continental Cup; his physicality has shown that, despite spending a lot of time in the sin bin, he could have been a game changer.  He did prove that, helping Malmo to a Cup in S79.  He’s still coming close to being a point-per-game player, but it depends what value is placed on being a power forward in the league.

Spartan: Moreau would have been a solid piece for Helsinki today, but I think it’s clear anyone we redraft to the Titans would have been sold in Helsinki’s massive fire sale a couple seasons ago. However, that’s not going to stop me from sending the all-around defenseman in Jan Hlozek to the Titans to shore up their back end. He has 30 goals to his name and 144 points in 182 games, quietly having a very solid season. I think he could be even better without being buried under all of Riga’s defensive depth.

     10th overall - London United - Original Pick: That Dude - C
    Matty’s Pick:  Zeedayno Chara - @Jubis - D
    Spartan’s Pick: That Dude - @Cornholio - C

Matty: Man, would London love having this guy on their team right now.  He solidified his place in the VHL in only his sophomore season, and for a d-man, that’s saying a lot.  He’s the equivalent of a swiss army knife; he has the right tools for the right jobs.  Has a great shot, great passes, blocks shots, and hits very hard.  Everything that London needs right now, he can do.

Spartan: I honestly don’t see any reason why That Dude shouldn’t go back to London in this redraft. He was VHL ready off the bat, and has also had a very solid career to the tune of 73-118-191 in 254 games. While London is going through a retool after trying to compete in S77 and S78, That Dude has shown that he is going to be the center-piece of the London team that emerges from the rebuild.

11th overall - Malmo Nighthawks - Original Pick: Druss Deathwalker - RW
    Matty’s Pick: Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. - @TacticalHammer  - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. - @TacticalHammer  - D

Matty: Malmo was in full rebuild phase at this point, and a solid defensive prospect could have been what the doctor ordered.  Although Mr Beef has had 40+ point seasons during his ELC, he’s broken out this season.  He’s a great puck-mover and plays more in a support role, but could this type of player have helped Malmo win that S79 Cup?  I’d like to think so.

Spartan: The only remaining thing that Malmo could sorely use would be another blue chip defenseman such as Fizzlebeef. Losing Deathwalker at this spot costs them some forward depth, but their defensive situation was much bleaker before they swung a trade for Scotty Kaberle from Toronto, and even he is starting to head into the twilight years of his career. Fizzlebeef Jr may not be the most offensive defenseman, but he provides solid defense and racks up assists, which would be perfect alongside the loaded forward group Malmo boasts.

12th overall - Helsinki Titans: - Original Pick: Gustislav Nasherov - RW
    Matty’s Pick: Gustislav Nasherov - @Vat - RW
    Spartan’s Pick: Gustislav Nasherov - @Vat - RW

Matty: Yep, no change here.  Helsinki made the right pick with Nasherov.  Although he had a slow start, playing lower in the lineup on a stacked team, he quickly became Helsinki’s top young forward the following season.  The team has been stripped and is currently rebuilding, but with Nashy at the forefront, this pick will bear fruit for the Titans going forward.

Spartan: Agreed, there really isn’t a better pick for Helsinki here. While not VHL ready at the time, having the extra season to develop only helped him as Helsinki ended up going into a rebuild anyways. Like That Dude in London, Nasherov is primed to be one of the centerpieces of the finished product once Helsinki completes their process.

13th overall - HC Davos Dynamo - Original Pick: Miles Johnson - LW
    Matty’s Pick: Joe Madison - @Brewins15 - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Joe Madison - @Brewins15 - D

Matty: With Davos selecting Telker instead of Reinhart, the Dynamo would have been hard pressed to not select a defenseman.  Madison would have been somewhat an off-the-board pick, but he has grown into a reliable player.  This season, he’s producing at a higher rate, and could have seen top line duty sooner on Davos had he gotten selected here instead.  He’s at the point where he could play up or down in any lineup and be an effective player.

Spartan: Similarly to Matty, because I had Davos passing over Reylynn Reinhart, I have to select a defenseman for them here. While Madison hasn’t really put up many points over his career, he’s been stuck behind Tom Eagles and Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr for his entire career. Perhaps the chance to make up the top pairing in Davos instead would be more beneficial, with Davos securing their Reinhart replacement at 13.

    14th overall - Calgary Wranglers - Original Pick: Joe Madison - D
    Matty’s Pick: TheCHEESE - @TheCHEESE - RW
    Spartan’s Pick: TheCHEESE - @TheCHEESE - RW

Matty: Originally selected 31st overall by HC Davos, The Cheese could be considered the steal of this draft.  He has developed some talent to play in a depth role, more or less, but he isn’t an elite player.  He’s the type of player that supports a top line with good offensive and positional skill, and as of right now, he’s on pace to break his previous bests.  Maybe another season or two could see him explode, but for now he’s playing on a 2nd line with some good players.

Spartan: I was honestly surprised to see that Cheese has put up 115 points in 181 games considering he was drafted 31st overall. He’s really been one of the most underrated players in this class, and could provide Calgary with solid 2nd line depth scoring. This would mean Calgary is short a 2nd pairing D-man, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s a replacement option here. Hadrian hasn’t really lived up to the hype, but TheCheese has more than exceeded it.

    15th overall - Warsaw Predators - Original Pick: Hadrian - D
    Matty’s Pick: Kyle Glass - @Tbeez99 - LW
    Spartan’s Pick: Nicholas Mariani - @Mistxh J - LW

Matty: Kyle Glass slid all the way to 22nd overall, a second round steal by the Moscow Menace.  Glass has become a solid power forward now, having been moved from Moscow to London.  He could have been a mainstay for Warsaw, even though they are in somewhat of a type of retooling.  Glass excels at hitting mostly, although his defensive IQ hasn’t yet reached the levels of a top line VHL player yet.

Spartan: Mariani was pretty slow in his development but has torn it up this season, his sophomore year in the VHL. While he wouldn’t have helped the seemingly perennial contenders that was Warsaw before this season, he’d be a solid piece today and for their future. With 94 points in 110 career games and only 8 total penalty minutes, he’s showing that he’s a fantastic late bloomer and could be a big piece of Warsaw moving forward.

     16th overall - Vancouver Wolves - Original Pick: Baron Kruulenstien - D
    Matty’s Pick: Hadrian - @bluesfan55 - D
    Spartan’s Pick: Kyle Glass - @Tbeez99 - LW

Matty: Hadrian has become a very solid depth defenseman so far in his VHL career, also helping Warsaw win the Continental Cup in his rookie season.  He defends quite well and loves to throw around the body.  Warsaw got him at 15th; had he gone one pick later, Vancouver would have had one less issue to worry about during their rebuild with this man on the blue line.  He hasn’t provided much offense to date, but that’s changing slowly.

Spartan: Kyle Glass may just be the worst defensive player in this class sporting a -64 rating, but that could just be a byproduct of playing for Moscow for the first few seasons of his career. Before the VHLE, Moscow also ran 3 forward lines, which could have also contributed to his lower point total, but he has shown that he is fully capable of scoring goals which is really all the Vancouver Wolves could ask for.

    Game Recap: Game #193
    London 5
    Davos 4

In a game featuring two European teams at the opposite ends of the conference, the score was closer than one might expect. The EU Conference-leading London United have been riding their rookie-fueled offense all season while Davos has been struggling to score. The United opened the scoring after only playing 1:23 on Zaza Colors’ 13th but Nicholas Mariani responded for Davos with his 9th just over four minutes later. London’s Shane Lazeski scored before another four minutes had passed and that’s how the first period ended, with London up 2-1 and the shots tied at 11 apiece. Then things got interesting. London owned the second period scoring three goals in rapid succession including two on the power play. Before the period was six minutes in, Lazeski, Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr and Nils Godlander had all tallied to put London up 5-2 with the United outshooting the hapless Dynamo 19-9. The game was as good as over. Or was it? Davos must have stolen some of London’s Gatorade in the second intermission because it was the Dynamo that came out flying in the third period with Gregory Bates, David Tavau, and Trevor Wallace all scoring in the first 3:32! In spite of again tying in shots with 14 each, goalies Kunibuni UnGuri and Cole Pearce would stop everything else with Pearce picking up his 17th win for London. One thing that helped London to the win was going 2-for-3 with the man advantage and winning 58.8% of the faceoffs. London’s Matt Avens would pick up two assists to hold off teammate Godlander atop the rookie and team scoring leaderboard.

    3 Stars

Welcome to VSN’s VHL playoff preview and predictions, in this article we’ll break down each series and discuss what players could be key to turning the tide of the series and potentially pulling off an upset. While you’re here be sure to check out some of the other recent VSN articles.

    Wildcard Series

     Los Angeles vs. Toronto
Our first series of the playoffs could be a quick series as we have Los Angeles, a team that is very much in a win-now mindset taking on a Toronto team that over performed all season to squeak into the final playoff spot. This season Los Angeles went 3-1-1 against Toronto and with that out scored them 20-14 in those games. For Toronto to stand a chance they will need rookie goalie Oskar Lindbergh @Doomsday to stand on his head and for the rest of their rookies to step up in a big way. For Los Angeles this series should be a quick one as if they just play the way they did all season it should be theirs for their taking with the majority of their roster approaching their final seasons this is their best chance.

    Prediction: Los Angeles in 3
VSN vote: LAS 6, TOR 1

     Warsaw vs. HC Davos
This series is shaping up to be a nail-biter with Warsaw winning the season series 3-2 and with each game being a 1 goal game. For the most part every game between the two this past season came down to goaltending and I see a similar trend happening here with both teams starting goalies going toe-to-toe with Andrew Bowman @BrutalBoost and Kunibuni UnGuri @Berocka, here I have to give the nod to UnGuri and thus Davos as they outperformed Bowman in every single statistical category this past season. If Warsaw is to have a chance, retiring franchise player Chris Reynolds @Crstats23 will need to step up in a big way to beat Davos’ defense lead by Reylynn Reinhart @WranglersSuck and get to UnGuri.

    Prediction: Davos in 5
VSN vote: DAV 4, WAR 3

    Conference Semi-Finals

     Seattle vs. Calgary
Another series where during the regular season no team had a clear edge with each team winning 3 of the 6 games, during which Seattle would outscore Calgary by only 2 goals (21-19). For Calgary to keep this close they are going to need to shut down Seattle’s offense, namely league leading scorer Justin Lose @youloser1337 who will already be adding a lot of hardwear at the end of the season and will be looking to add a Continental Cup to their trophy case. The player tasked with this will likely be Calgary’s top 2 defensemen in Tom Eagles @Greg_Di and Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. @TacticalHammer If Calgaries defense can step up to the plate we could have a close series on our hands. Also in Calgaries favour is that Sirkants Klamasteris @hedgehog337 has had yet another great season and will look to close the door on Seattle and tilt the series in Calgary’s direction.

    Prediction: Seattle in 7
VSN vote: SEA 4, CGY 3

     Vancouver vs. Los Angeles
After what Vancouver did in the regular season it’s hard to debate a reason on why they will not make it at least out of the conference semifinals. In the regular season Vancouver took 4 of the 6 match-ups and would dominate Los Angeles in each of their wins, putting up near double digit goals in 2 of them. If Los Angeles is to slay the reigning champion it will likely fall on the shoulders of Rara Rasputin @Victor who will need to be the best player on the ice in each and every game. For Vancouver it will likely be Jerome @MexicanCow123 and Tyler Reinhart @Zetterberg who will lead their offense and will try to run over the Stars.

    Prediction: Vancouver in 6
VSN vote: VAN 4, LAS 2

     Moscow vs. Prague
Of all the series discussed so far, this looks to be the most one-sided with Moscow dominating Prague during the regular season winning all 6 of their games against Prague. In total Moscow out-scored Prague 29-12. In those games Duncan Idaho @OrbitingDeath and The Seabastard @Seabass. Papa Emeritus was also key to Moscow’s success against Prague and will need to continue to shut down Prague’s leading scorer Battre Sandstrom @Acydburn and top forward Dominic Gobeil @Dom. The main key for Prague is this series will come down to their goaltending, in particular David Davis’s @Josh ability to stand on his head in each and every game. Prague will likely steal a game or two, but it’s hard to deny Moscow a series win here.

    Prediction: Moscow in 4
VSN vote: MOS 9, PRA 0

     Malmo vs. HC Davos
Malmo does not have an easy road to the Continental Cup and will try to repeat the success they had in S79 Standing in their way will be HC Davos who will look to make their deepest playoff run yet during GM @GustavMattias’s final season. On paper this series looks like Malmo is the heavy favourites. During the season series Malmo took 4 of the 6 games with most games being within one goal. The main key for Malmo in this series is Brendan Telker @Telkster who will look to continue their offensive dominance. Similar to the previous series if Davos is to upset Malmo they will need to continue to be one of the best defensive teams in the league while having their offense step up in a big way starting with Luc Tessier @KC15 and Taro Tsujimoto. This series should be Malmo’s to lose, but could be closer than anticipated.

    Prediction: Malmo in 6
VSN vote: MAL 9,  DAV 0

    Conference Finals

     Vancouver vs. Seattle
Once again Vancouver looks to be on their way to the Continental Cup Final. During the regular season the two teams split the season series 3 games a piece, with Seattle taking the slight advantage with goal scoring. This series could very well go to game 7, with the slight nod going to Vancouver so long as they can shut Justin Lose down, as Lose is the driving force behind Seattle’s offense. This series could very well come down to which team can be better defensively and in goal, which is where Vancouver has a clear advantage with Robin Galante Nillson @RomanesEuntDomus and Hari Singh Nalwa @Squidward0 providing a stronger top pair when compared to Seattle’s defense led by Zeedayno Chara @Jubis.

    Prediction: Vancouver in 7
VSN vote: VAN 5, SEA 3

     Malmo vs. Moscow
During the regular season Malmo took the slight edge in the season series winning 3 of the 5 games all of which were very close. Although Malmo took the win in the regular season this Moscow team is built for the playoffs and will be a tough task. Hard Markinsson @STZ will be looking to make a name for themselves this playoff run and Malmo may very well fall victim to them and Moscow’s high powered offense. This Moscow roster doesn’t really have a spot where you can look and say “that’s their weak spot”, similarly Malmo has a near identical roster makeup and is slightly weaker in goal when comparing Artem Tretiak @Molholt to Papa Emeritus @Beketov which is where Moscow gets a slight edge. No matter who comes out on top of this series it will be a true joy to watch and it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top.

    Prediction: Moscow in 7
VSN vote: MOS 5, MAL 3

    Continental Cup Finals

     Vancouver vs. Moscow
ROUND #2!!! A rematch of the S80 Continental Cup Finals which saw Vancouver win in game #7 with Jivere Zolnek @Sixersfan594 scoring the game winning goal in the first period. Both teams are very even on paper, however Vancouver swept the season series winning all 4 games, which is why they get the edge in this matchup yet again. Moscow will need to find a way to shut down Vancouver’s offense and their top pair of Markinsson and Aurlien Moreau @Frank will be up to the task. This series once again could go either way and leads to the question of will history repeat itself or will Moscow prove to be a menace to Vancouver’s hopes? Only time will tell.

    Prediction: Vancouver in 7
VSN vote: VAN 4, MOS 4

1.) Your VHL player is going on a Christmas break. What is your player doing for the holidays?
I will go somewhere sunny and warm. I will relax and enjoy the beaches.

2.) What are YOUR plans for the holidays?
Not much. Taking it easy. Heading back to the old hometown for some days. Eating and resting.

3.) Despite having a contending roster over the last few seasons, what has been holding Calgary back from performing like one?
Our fans. They are too demanding and at the same time too quiet. They show support the wrong way and that is by not showing enough of it.

4.) If someone were to make a player card for you, what render would you choose and why?
Erik Karlsson could be one. Any offensive Dman works really

5.) What is your favourite part about the holiday season?
Everything slows down, or I try to slow down at least.

6.) Choose a teammate, tag them
and give them a shoutout about why you appreciate them!
Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr sounds like a barbeque sauce tycoon. I like barbeque. Your player is a great player as well! @TacticalHammer

    Captain: Nathan Perry @tinafrombobsburgers

Perry now going into his third season as the Wranglers captain. This is voted on by the team so it’s clear the positive impact he has made on his teammates! Congrats Cap!

Assistant: Phil The Rock Johnson @Phil

Phil has been an Alternate in the past and to be joining our season 81 group of captains shows how loved he is by his peers.  Congrats Phil!

    Assistant: Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr. @TacticalHammer

Rolf isn’t the most vocal but his play on the ice is what had made an impact on his teammates. It’s his first time as part of our captains group, congrats Rolf!

It's off-season, the world cup is soon kicking in and every countries revealed their rosters which means that it is now time to reveal your favorite underdog. That's right, it's team mercenaries, they represent every countries and they have to prove to their country's GM that they made the wrong choice not picking them. They are ready and they are pumped, here they come:

I know... I might have taken the mercenary name way too seriously for the announcement concept and I don't know who is gonna pay the bill but it's not me.

I don't even know if this is something we can change or whether we just have to deal with it the way that it is because of the website host, but I'm throwing it out there anyway.

When I get a notification that someone reacted to my post, it always shows the "thumbs up" icon regardless of what reaction was given. Is there a way to make it so that the little icon in the notification is the same as/similar to the reaction that was given on the post?
