This feels a little like kneecapping the BoG, since its preventing people who could be contributing from contributing. I think we as individuals should be more aware of whether we are contributing or not, and step back from the role if needed. I think everyone in here is responsible enough that they could self-diagnose signs of burnout, but I'll admit that I would worry of not being allowed back if I was to ask for a break from BoG duties. Maybe if we can sort of clarify more tolerance and flexibility on that front, to allow people to step back and rejoin when they're ready, individuals would be better prepared to handle burnout from this role.

I like limited contracts not specifically to motivate them, but moreso to offer trial periods to see how they perform and to know if the position is right for them. I feel like term limits of being a commissioner would have the same concerns as a limited term BoG Head where the topics discussed and worked on would be based off the user's agenda, compounded by the knowledge that there is a time limit to when those ideas can be pushed

Neat, thanks 😅. I admittedly am interesting in commissioning(?), but I would prefer to start at the E or M level first before taking on a much higher level role. I still think I could be a Blue now and handle the general responsibilities and do a decent job, as I'm pretty active on a daily basis and have handled numerous jobs without issue. I still feel like I need to prove myself more from an administrative perspective before that though and gain more trust, but I'd be happy to interview or discuss the position further if there's interest from Blues.

I mean I'm all for fresh blood and limits on BOG may not be the worst thing in the world.

I would raise a concern on term limits for blues, reds, greens as the job takes a specific person and turnover can have a negative effect on the respective leagues. I will add that if this is the consensus though then I'll gladly abide by it.

As for you Mr. @Spartanon being a blue/red/green general. We've had many conversations about you doing so. Don't sell yourself short ;)

That sounds exactly like how we used to run the award committee; I’ve learned from experience that you run out of qualified candidates incredibly quickly. Like within 5 seasons we’d be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

We’re looking into it. If nothing else Josh and I agree that the blue team has historically worked best with 2 critical thinkers and a visionary. That use to be me and Quik on one side then Beav on the other, then Al replaced Beav, then Josh replaced Quik. Point is we’re both thinkers, not visionaries.

We have been picking our own for a bit now but honestly when I became blue it’s because I volunteered in this very forum and said hey, I think I can do that. So maybe we try that again as well, it worked once. Anyone want to step up to the plate? I’m not saying it’s like “first one to volunteer gets it” but at least it gives us some ideas.

I wouldn't hate the idea of becoming of a blue. I've been a VHLM Commie, VHLE Commie, so the progression would make sense. As far as offsetting the thinker/visionary I think I can put a foot in both and wear a few different hats. Can discuss it more with you and Josh if you wanted.

I know it's not a first one to volunteer or anything. Just saying I would throw my hat in the ring.

The Sun Gazzette continues its monthly coverage and update of Northern Virginia native and now former SBA basketball player Alvin Mack, as he continues to be eligible in the VHL, despite not having entertained any overtures by the league and its general managers to date. Our beat reporter Jordan Smith caught up with Mack on May 1st, in Bryson City, North Carolina.

Smith: Same question, different month - any plans on pursuing hockey?

Mack: Well, given we're having this conversation in the smack dab of the VHL and at my vacation home in Bryson City, I'd say the chances are pretty slim, wouldn't you? In all seriousness, I don't think I've got what it takes to lace up the skates right now and give it a whirl. I'm focused on enjoying some peace and serenity up here, and watching Steve Lattimer put together a great show in the SBA. Thank goodness for the All-SBA pass.

Smith: Speaking of Bryson City, why did you choose to have a vacation home here?

Mack: My girlfriend used to work not too far from here, closer to Asheville. She turned me onto the area, it's really peaceful even if it's a hike from the DC area. The drive is beautiful going through rural Virginia, down through a bit of Tennessee, and then hitting the mountains of North Carolina. As you can see, even though I'm no outdoorsman and have no competence as a handyman, I'll pay for a view, and this place certainly has all of that and then some.

Smith: So you subscribe to All-SBA pass? What and who are you watching, normally?

Mack: Well, of course, Steve. I don't miss a game. I really wish they'd use him more as a fulcrum at the high post, he has elite passing skills and reminds me of Nikola Jokic in terms of using the angles. He's already got the athleticism to finish tough plays around the basket. I love watching Wally Herman play. He's taken a huge leap and I don't think you'll find two guys who play and work as hard as him and Lattimer. Have you ever seen them take a play off? I haven't seen it from either of them. I've watched Kunta play too. I'm honestly jealous and talking to Steve, think he is too. Not that often you get to be a primary scorer for a title-contending team. I know I had to wait my turn to start contributing to the box score even though I was doing well with 20-28 minutes a game my first few seasons. But I compare my Mexico City experience to what Kunta has in Miami...he struck gold. You also can't not watch the Ravens, just to see if they'll lose.

Smith: Last time we met, you were at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum talking about Name, Image & Likeness. Before today's conversation, you were at the Collegiate Sports Summit. What gives?

Mack: Someone has it in their head that I'm a voice of reason in the new world and wild west of college athletics. So if I can help the NCAA, the athletic directors, and the 3rd parties who are going guns blazing into the NIL era be a little bit more responsible about how this whole thing plays out, then I'll certainly take the time to do that.

Smith: Post-All Star Weekend, any SBA predictions?

Mack: Well, first, I hate the all star weekend. I think I made it once during my time? It's ridiculously stupid how they pick players. In terms of the 2nd half of the season and the playoffs, I still think Charlotte is going to figure out a way to win it all. It seems wide open, though. Hopefully Coach Bobby puts in the time to do it, sometimes I think he gets outworked on the Xs and O's but he's one of the few guys lately to have won it all, and I know Steve has enjoyed playing for him mostly. So I'll stick with my pick.

This wraps up the May edition with Alvin Mack.

So I've been thinking about this more and if we go ahead (which seems to be the consensus). We would need said players to declare they're skipping the M to join the E.

@Josh Would it be possible to add a flag to players saying something like skip M draft or E draft eligible, something along those lines. That way we can change the E draft query (and possibly the M) to include /exclude these players (thinking of a union with the current query or just an or statement in the case of the E and a just skip M draft = no for the M )?

@rjfryman and I can manually set it if a player declares, that way we don't have to bother you to add one offs all the time.

I'll admit I don't know the exact code behind the portal. Based on the knowledge I do have, why could this not be a solid implementation?

Yes @hedgehog337, but I was told that I could skip the VHLM and the draft, I guess, to join the VHLE.  Had that happened as I was told it would.  I would have been on a team and eligible for Training Camp.  In any event, I am still pissed at missing those TPE.

You still wouldn't be eligible for training camp. None of the 84 guys are training camp eligible as they weren't VHL drafted. I even sent you a message on discord about how you shouldn't be able to click the button. You didn't miss out on any TPE since you wouldn't have had training camp in the M or the E and practice facility is both 2 TPE in both leagues. You haven't been stunted at all, only difference is you're playing in the E vs the M. You haven't missed out on anything.
