    VHLM Career

AJ Axelsen joined the Halifax 21st of the Victory Hockey League Minors just one week ago to play as a third line winger. While he didn't actually get onto the ice in his first two "games" for the 21st, he's gone on to play 89 minutes in his first eight games and, while he has yet to score a goal or provide an assist in a Halifax jersey, a rough start was to be expected given that his opposition and teammates have had much more practice than Axelsen to this point of his career. A good sign for Axelsen early is that the vast majority of his shots are at least forcing a save from the goalie, he hasn't had too many shots miss the net. Surprisingly given his intended playstyle, he's been shooting himself just as much as he's been attempting to find a teammate. He has picked up 6 penalty minutes, but that should not need to be addressed, the VHLM is known as a league where even the least physical players get involved in the rougher side of the game.

    Player Build

When Axelsen sent me his form for his player to be submitted for a Rookie Profile, he said that he would consider Axelsen a playmaker. While he is certainly leaning in that direction with passing being one of his primary attribute, for him to move more towards that intended goal he probably will want to generate a greater gap between passing and scoring as, right now, he's shooting just as much as he's attempting to pass.

    Main Areas for Improvement: Passing/Defense

For the reason stated above, it would be a good idea for Axelsen to consider creating a greater gap between passing and scoring if he'd like Axelsen to play more like a playmaker. He should also make sure to not totally neglect defense, as this attribute effects how quik a player responds to the loose puck.

    Consider Leaving: Strength

While strength is useful down the line, it's an attribute that affects how likely a player is to get successfully hit which is usually not as big a problem in the VHLM as it is in the VHL. Better to focus on the technical points of his game during the early points of his career rather than the physical ones.

    TPE Earning

So far, Axelsen has made a smart purchase in the player store to get his 5 uncapped TPE for being a first-generation player and seems to have an understanding of where he can earn capped TPE. If he wants to continue to do welfare for 4 TPE as opposed to the 6 TPE Graphic/Media/Podcasts, he can reach the 10 TPE cap by participating in these potential activites (underlined headers are links):

    VHL.Com Articles/Player Cards

In the VHL.com forum, players can post a 150 word article or a Player Card (Example here) for 2 TPE each or they can do both for 4 TPE.

Axelsen actually submitted for a Press Conference this week, but he potentially could have earned more TPE by answering all six questions provided, which would have given him 2 TPE

Every week except during the off-season, the trivia master Victor (although for the next couple of weeks it will be Beketov) ask two VHL-related trivia questions and, if you get them right, you will be rewarded with 2 TPE at the end of the week. Since some of these questions (especially historical) can be difficult for newer members, it would be worth consulting with your VHLM GM/AGM as to how to find the correct answers to them.

There's also uncapped one-time only TPE tasks that are useful to submit as early as possible to give your player an early boost.

Given that Axelsen has only been in the league for around a week, it is difficult to get a proper gauge on where he will end up going in the VHL Draft. If he keeps earning the same amount of TPE that he earned last week, I can see him being selected in the sixth or seventh round. However, should he start earning more weekly TPE with the advice that I've given above, I think it's possible that he could squeeze into the fifth round.

Tagger reacted to Fire Tortorella in Update Scale
Finally have time to respond to all of this.

    In general:

I am not a fan of going from V1 to V2. I think doing so requires too many changes to the structure of the league at a time when we're already going a huge overhaul between expansion and a large influx of new members. Also, I think there's something to be said about having a different version of the sim engine than the other hockey sim leagues out there. I know SHL uses V2, and not sure what GOMHL uses, but that league is sort of different than the VHL and SHL so it doesn't entirely count. Also, I'm not sure if it's required or not, but I am 100% not in favor of having endurance as an attribute and the expanded rosters that would be necessary as a result.

Regarding the lower starting attributes and capping attributes at a 90, 95, etc. - I understand the point you're making @Quik about how you're just changing the baseline for what's considered good, but I think there's something to be said about the mental aspect of what "feels good" for a good attribute. Especially for a member newer to the league, I don't think you get the same internal satisfaction of hitting 70 or 80 as a top attribute as you would hitting 90. I'm also against archetypes in this league, as you can basically accomplish the same thing with an update scale. Archetypes make sense in a league like the SBA where there are so many more attributes that are necessary for making a good player, and they change not only depending on your position, but also what type of player you want to be.

What I am in favor of:

I think we need to make the top of the update scale more harsh. Not sure if it should start at 90 or 95. When we originally made the changes to the update scale, we didn't want to make it too harsh for those who don't cap on TPE each week. I think we've seen it enough now though where players are hitting max or close to max attributes too early in their career. I don't know how feasible this would be and it definitely goes against my idea of K.I.S.S, but would it be possible to have an adjusting update scale based on how many attributes you have over 90 or 95? So for example, you have the current update scale until 1 attribute hits 90, then a harsher one when you have 2 attributes hit 90, and an even harsher one when you have 3 attributes hit 90, etc... This probably isn't doable, so we might want to do something like:

    80 -> 85 --- 5 TPE per point
    85 ->90 --- 8 TPE per point
    90 -> 95 --- 10 TPE per point
    95 -> 99 --- 12 TPE per point

I'm not sure if this is a change I'd want to see right away, but we might want to explore giving goalies higher base attributes. As @Tagger said, goalies in the VHLM (lower TPE with similar TPE levels to their skater counterparts) perform worse than similar goalies in the VHL, so we might want to give them a little boost.

As far as the VHLM cap, I keep going back and forth over this. As I mentioned earlier, the goal of the VHLM is to develop players for the VHL, so in that sense, it's doing a great job currently. Yeah, we could maybe bump it up 25 TPE to make the cap 225, but in that case, what are we actually solving? A couple more players per year stay down for another year in the VHLM and take away a spot from a true new member for that season? You're also more likely to see players with only 7 seasons max in the VHL then (and no, I'm not in favor of extending careers or the career counter to start when you hit the VHL, as I don't think we should be encouraging extra time in the VHLM like some other leagues do in their minor/NCAA systems).

I’ll post more once I get back from work, but couple of thoughts just reading this:

    - Initial concern is, using the VHLM as an example, the lower attributes across the board has made the goalies much worse in that league, wouldn’t that carry over to VHL with these changes?

    - Talking about opening up the opportunity for the sim change, I’d actually like us to just test the current environment with V2 first. The last test wasn’t the best to use cause it was S62, where the Bears with one defneseman played a riga team with Aamo in goal in the wildcard, which is nothing like the current VHL.

For me, I think we'd have to see what a 99 att goalie would be capable of in this era (I know Stopko was there last season, but the skating talent has gotten significantly better even since then) before we could begin to say that this would get goalie stats back in line. My concern is that if players on 93's and 94's are getting save percentages like .914% near the top of the goalie standings, is a goalie with 99 going to have a significant improvement on top of that? Honestly if this were to become a concern (which I'm personally not really sure it will, different eras should mean different evaluations of stats), I would think it's more likely upping the update scale for skaters would be closer to having the effect you'd be after than lowering the update scale for goalies.

Saskatoon Wild Scouting Center, Saskatchewan – Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Shane Mars. Kari Jurri.

Long ago, the four nations lived toge – uh, wrong intro. My bad.

These three prospects are ostensibly the most talented and highly-sought after players in a draft that is nearly (if not already) 90 players deep.  As expected, they (among maybe a half-dozen other prospects) have received plenty of airtime and speculation: we’re used to hearing the pro comparisons and possible career trajectories, fans clamoring for lower-ranked teams to ‘tank’ their season to get the next most valuable prospect, and so on.

To put this in perspective – the last several dispersal drafts have had between forty and seventy draftees; aside from last season’s dispersal (67 players) the next most comparable was a 51-man dispersal ten seasons ago, in Season 56’s draft. When compared with Entry drafts, it’s still potentially the largest field of selectable players in recent history.

The lowest TPE pick from S65’s entry draft was Billy Kimber, the thirty-first (although not the last) overall pick of the draft, who had 32 TPE with the season’s live draft rankings; there are 87 players this season with at least that many points waiting for their chance at the pros. Overall, the Season 65 draft had 38 drafted players – this season’s pool would have half of its players go entirely undrafted if the same were to happen this season.

Make no mistake – recruiters have been putting in their work and it’s been paying off. But because this season’s draft pool is so apparently deep, players with the potential to make it as World Juniors, World Cup players, or first-round fantasy picks may go without being mentioned until draft time.

“We’ve got enough first-round quality wings alone to make up most Entry drafts by themselves,” one anonymous scout commented at a Week 2 VHLM game, “Mars and Jurri are the obvious, but Aaltonen, Volosenkov, Freeman, Sigurdsson, Jagr, Meyers…”

“That would have been your average first round in most previous entry drafts. This year? Those are just the top eight prospects between two positions.”

General Managers and AGMs make it their job to look into each year’s eligible player list – so let’s take the dive for ourselves and try to find a few hidden gems, why don't we?

    Inclusion Criteria
    (1) S66 Draft Class; currently included in @Tagger‘s most recent Scouting Center rankings.
    (2) As of the Week 2 VHLSC rankings, currently ranked below rank 20 (based strictly on TPE, likely to be drafted in Round 3 or later of the current draft)
    (3) Early bird gets the worm – draftees with large TPE claims this week will be more highly considered. Last three weeks’ TPE gain will be the main inclusion criterion.
(NOTE – some of these TPEs may be reported several hours before article posting, and may not match current TPEs)

D Jerry Garcia – Houston Bulls
    Current Projection – Mid-Late 3rd Round (23/88)
    TPE – 144 (+56 after 3/3)
Garcia is a hybrid of the old-school defensive defenseman with a new-school prototypical skillset. He’s one of the more skilled defenders on a VHLM roster, with the ability to make it to loose pucks and stop many forwards in their tracks. In recent weeks, he’s been hitting the gym and working on his playmaking skills, but he’s still certainly most effective on his team’s half of the ice. The defenseman’s agent (@GustavMattias) has experience in a number of arenas – the most recent being a stint as Team Asia’s World Juniors GM. He’s been cited as an “incredible force for good” in the locker room by his own GM, and one of the prominent voices interfacing with the media for his minor league squad.

Perhaps most importantly, Garcia has been putting in plenty of work on the ice and in the gym; many scouts have noted diversification in the defender’s skills in the last couple of weeks alone. His plethora of proficiencies leave him most likely to continue along the defensive defenseman or enforcer route – but we’d be remiss to count out the possibility of development into a two-way defenseman. Regardless, Garcia’s rapid and recent improvement is a sign that GMs in the majors ought to take note of – he’d be a steal in the fourth round and wouldn’t be out of the question for the early third.

    Scout’s Notes
“He’s well-rounded and is a threat on both sides of the ice because of his passing ability. Something of a black hole for errant passes and chasing the puck down after a big hit.”
“[Jerry] has a penchant for making big hits and blocking big shots. He’s probably your goalie’s best friend.”
“He played guitar for the Grateful Dead and has an ice cream flavor named after him, I mean come on.”
“If I’m a team in need of multiple positions, I’m looking to steal Garcia in the late third, or pick him for value as early as the second.”

ABOVE - Hans Gruber, seen here definitely not scheming.

C Hans Gruber – Saskatoon Wild
    Current Projection – Late 3rd, early 4th round (29/88)
    TPE – 125 (+46 after 3/3)
This promising young forward from Germany was traded from Philadelphia in exchange for picks just last Saturday (3/16) with teammates DWin Championship, Cody Parkey, and Brian Strong. Wild GM @Peace made the massive exchange of picks – including what may be over half of the team’s S67 dispersal selections – for a chance to win now.

Some suggest Gruber’s something of a grinder or playmaker – and this early in his career, he could probably opt to go either way. It’s hard to pick out one specific strength for the winger, who has shown glimpses of excellence in defense and puck handling in addition to the positional mainstays of passing and scoring. In 34 games in the minors, he’s accumulated 6 goals in 68 shots, and a total of 24 points. He’s presently second on the depth chart – which means he’s quite likely to run into other more-developed forwards and defensemen whenever he’s on the ice. Though his performance does not yet top the league, the Wild GM can rest easy: the young German scored an overtime-winning goal just earlier today in one of his first games with the team.

    Scout’s Notes
“Sure, I see why he could be easy to sleep on. Plus-minus isn’t too flashy – but take a look at his last couple of games and tell me he can’t at least hold his own with the best.”
“That screamer to clinch today’s game against the Reapers should at least catch your eye.”
“Didn’t this guy steal like $640,000,000 or something?”

ABOVE - Clayton Park playing goalie for the Vienna Thunder, Midget AAA team (per biography)

G Clayton Park – Yukon Rush
    Accolades – 1x WJC Team World (S65)
    Current Projection – Early 4th round (32/88)
    TPE – 119 (+68 after 3/3)
Buried underneath the (well-deserved) hype for Kandee Cain (@SlashACM) and Owen May (@FacebookFighter) is Austrian netminder Clayton Park, a top-four prospect for this season’s draft. Taken 49th overall (7th round) in the S65 Dispersal Draft, Clayton has stepped up his game considerably and may merit consideration for a pick as high as the early third round depending on how the rest of this season plays out.

He sits only behind the newly-reinforced Juan Jaundice in shots against but has managed an 86.6% save percentage in spite of the volume of shots against him, good for third in the minors behind the aforementioned Cain (89.2%) and S65 New York draftee Chase (90.0%). He’s currently in the bottom half of the table for goals allowed (3.39) – but many scouts believe that’s simply a function of the number of shots he’s had to defend this season. Park takes on the style of a classic butterfly goalie; though slightly undersized at 5’ 10” and just 150 lbs. (68 kg), Park has shown solid reaction time, positioning, and rebound control.

And don’t worry, even when he’s not playing hockey he finds a way to keep in the cold: he has a long history of downhill skiing in his free time.

    Scout’s Notes
“Second-best butterfly goalie behind Cain… probably won’t see a ton of ice time in the pros next season but has potential through the roof.”
“Excellent support system, a lengthy history on the ice; if he sticks around he could be pretty good.”
“Clayton Park, eh? You talkin’ ‘boot the one in Halifax?

RW Mat Tocco – Philadelphia Reapers
    Current Projection – Early 6th Round (43/88)
    TPE – 98 (+68 since 3/3)
We’re fourteen games (sort of) into the young career of Czech/Italian forward Mat Tocco, and in spite of limited ice time (19.7 mpg, 67th in the minors) he’s racked up a nice plus-minus of +9 with 9 points – not too shabby for a brand-new entry. He has elements of the prototypical sniper-style forward, but with a nice added bonus of being able to skate around slower defenders. As with many of the prospects on the board thus far, Tocco is very moldable – but his strengths right now are mobility and scoring.

Though he’s recently had to move to the States, Tocco comes from humble origins. Born of an Italian immigrant and a butcher’s daughter, he’s proven throughout his life that hard work is just part of the process for him; his rapid improvement on the ice over the last few weeks certainly corroborates that. He faces an uphill battle, with nearly twenty wingers above him on most draft boards. If his past is any indicator, however, he’s ready for the test.

    Scout’s Notes
“Pretty raw, but the scoring potential is there. We can always use another high-quality sniper in the league; the sky’s the limit for him.”
“Built like a brick sh*thouse for a guy his height. Not surprising to see the number of hits he’s laid out so far.”
“Glad to see all of his hard work pay off. Seems like he’s in for the long haul.”
“I’d like to see a GM reach a little for him. Might not be out of the question to see him late third, early fourth round by the time all’s said and done. Guys that improve as fast as him go on to either have damn good careers or flame out.”

His story is that he’s actually a Season 49 draftee who retired after Season 56 (hence his regular season stats on his player page).

The reason he’s listed as Season 63 is because this was in the early days of creating players through the portal and there were some different systems which let the user CB204 claim AK47 as his new player for the S63 Draft. This was quickly rectified and he went on to create Mike Lavalee but long story short, AK47 isn’t eligible @ShawnGlade
  10. Thanks

@Tagger You deserve all the props you can get for that.... and somehow I stay in the same spot as last week, #60.

So typically for my weekly reports I would just do an extended write-up on a particular topic, but while those will continue to happen at the end of every week (next week will be my first Mock Draft of the season), I want to try implementing a new idea into the draft rankings that will put more focus on the players in this draft.

My plan is to write up a Rookie Profile on a daily/bi-daily (depending on number of interested parties) basis for active candidates that will cover their current VHLM career, their current player build, their activity to date and (if applicable) previous history in the VHL. So if you're a rookie and you'd like to see a write-up on your player, submit for the form below and I will have a rookie profile done for you sometime prior to the VHL Draft!

Thanks to the players who have already submitted for this (currently sitting at 12), definitely got enough for this draft at least to do this as a thing. Just a few extra notes about my plans for these:

    - I'll likely start doing these next Monday/Tuesday (3/25 or 3/26), so one or two days after the Mock Draft is posted. Main reason is just so I have a projected draft position in mind for players who've submitted a profile.

    - As of right now, I'll probably be posting a Rookie Profile every other day, but if more people submit for profiles, there may be multiple days in a row with a profile. I won't be doing profiles on Sundays though, since that's when I'll be doing my write-ups.

    - Everyone who submits for a profile using the form will receive a Rookie Profile prior to the draft, however I will predominantly be focusing first on newer members who are lower down the rankings as I'll be offering advice on how they can improve their TPE earning. Better covering those prospects first so they've got more time to improve after their profile as opposed to players who already hit TPE caps pretty consistently.

Not gonna lie, when I saw you posted in here I was panicked that you'd retired Ryuu and made a new guy ?

Tagger got a reaction from McWolf in S66 Draft Class Rankings Podcast: Team Needs
So as I break down at the start of this podcast, when I did the S63 Draft Rankings, I had 8 weeks of topics prior to the draft to bring up in my weekly rankings. However, since I've joined the S66 Draft Rankings a week later in the process, I'll likely only have 7 weeks to do stuff, which would've meant I would have had to have dropped a topic. So instead, I've decided to take the topic that is easiest to talk about while driving and do podcasts for that subject, which is team needs, which will hopefully help younger players see how their player would fit into each of the VHL's respected franchises.

The rest of the editions will be up likely by Monday-Tuesday
