While the percentage hits appear to be harsh on the surface, as long as Warsaw and Calgary maintain their actual lotto position in terms of not being able to fall beyond a certain pick I'd say this is a decently fair punishment.

I believe that to be the intention, sorry I didn’t make that more clear earlier. It’s been a crazy evening and morning. Need to confirm that’s how the portal will treat it but yes, this is just first overall odds. Much like how the lotto tournament worked your placement in the lotto doesn’t change, just the odds of winning it. So Warsaw still can only drop to 2nd and Calgary to 4th.

Precedent needs to change because honestly it’s every single season at this point so clearly leniency isn’t working. Additionally in the case of LA that you mention there were outside circumstances with the GM that had to be considered. At the end of the day we don’t like handing out punishments nor do we like arguing about them but the fact is that the rules exist and people need to start actually following them. Is every future game over 8 going to result in a punishment? Probably not, but there has to be a limit to the leniency.

It wasn't until very recently that this happened, maybe in the past year or so, but I've finally come to terms with being an older VHL member. I've written a ton about how my activity in the league has shifted a bit from when I was 19 and stupid (how many times have you read "I'm not on Discord as much anymore"?) but I also continued to keep a certain regard for those who had been here for, well, still many times longer than I have. They were just the ones that knew better, and I was just Gustav. Even marginally newer people used to tell me all about how they joined in S48 or whenever, and I'd have a bit of a "wow, so long ago!" moment. But I've been here 25 seasons at this point, since S65, and that probably blows some of your minds. It's weird.

I think it became clear to me that I was old here when things started mashing together in my head. I used to know just about every single active member--not only by name, but by profile picture, player, and having talked to them directly. I also used to know every single part of the rulebook and thought it was really weird that some older members didn't really seem to. And I'm not sure when this changed. I still click on Discord every day and open it up to see what's going on, but I don't really feel the need to contribute that I used to, and sometimes whoever is contributing isn't someone I know. I also know of all the good players, but I couldn't tell you who manages half of them. Plus, I see some of your names on the forum (and I'd shout you out if that probably wasn't disrespectful) and I really just...know you exist, and that's it. And on the very rare occasion when I talk about the VHL rulebook, sometimes things are brought up to me that I forgot ever happened to the rulebook, because my idea of the rules is the rules as they were when I was hell-bent on memorizing them.

And then a lot of my cool articles became articles about league history (aside from the one about deleting the E that no one bothered to actually read), because my first days now qualify as league history. Need I say more?

It's also weird because I'm 23. I'm not outside of any of the league's target demographics. I haven't aged out of anything; I just happen to have gotten to the places I wanted to get and made the connections I wanted to make here already. I'd love to get to know some newer members! I just don't think I need to get super involved to be trusted anymore. Besides, real life is a beautiful mess--I'm balancing lab work with classes and TA stuff and being somewhat popular for the first time in my life.

But at the end, I want to make it clear that there's a big difference between getting old--and everything that comes with it--and no longer caring. I still want what's best for the VHL. I still look at the forum every day, and multiple times at that. I'm still available to any GM who wants to talk and sometimes I don't even hate the slightly worse VHLM Commissioner all that much. It's just that I'd rather be making tacos than sitting on Discord and sometimes that also means I decide to claim welfare. I really like tacos.

And the really cool thing? Even though I can't directly tell, I know some of you guys look at me the same way I used to look at our other old guys. Sim league ethos is an interesting thing.

We have the same thing happening in SBA - though I think we perhaps have a higher percentage of users with league jobs or that do PTs. Bottom line is you have people logging into the site and having a good time - that itself is a positive thing whether they contribute to the league in any other way or not. I do not, since I am allowed to have my Auto 12 here but I do have a player and do at least the very odd PT here sometimes.

I also have no issues with people from here playing on SBA without a player there.

Hello. I am somebody who is known by quite a few titles in the VHL circle. I am muffins, I am sniffum, I am a former pretty bad Vasteras GM, I am a former pretty good Warsaw GM, I have been FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY out of consideration for GM of the year, I am a VHL Hall of Fame Builder, I am a GFX maker, I am pretty irrelevant to the modern scope of the VHL considering I was gone for quite a while. But one distinction I have that not a lot of people might know about is that I played a pretty big hand in the FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY meme becoming a thing in the league, some ten years before the term meme ever came to be used as it is today.

But before I get into that, here’s a little bit of context and prior backstory that honestly mostly serves to pad the word count. If you don’t really care about this part (and you really probably shouldn’t), feel free to skip ahead a couple paragraphs where there will be a nice convenient tl;dr. Anyways, we begin our story some time in 2008 or so; I was 13 years old, and had been active in OOTP 6.5 players leagues that I had found on a complete coincidence for close to a year at that point. Somebody joined one of the leagues I was in and made graphics that far blew away what everybody else there was making, and they said they had honed their skills in the VHL. That interested me enough to check the league out even though I didn’t (and still don’t) really care at all about hockey. I created a new player with my name, did one point task, and promptly went inactive, going into my draft with a whopping 6 TPE. Calgary’s General Manager at the time was looking for somebody to draft in the 3rd round (a wasteland of inactives at the time) and saw that I put my screenname on a popular instant messaging service on my VHL profile, so he reached out to ask if I’d be active if he picked me. I said sure, so he drafted me. He boasted a few times around the league that he got himself a massive steal late in the draft, but I never even logged in to sign my contract, let alone earn any TPE. A few weeks later I was released and that was it for Damien Walec.

A few months later I recreated in the league as Optimus Prime. I stayed active enough to earn some TPE, including writing a biography that was essentially me transcribing the Transformers Wikipedia page and then adding on 100ish words at the end about Optimus Prime deciding to become a hockey player. I earned enough TPE to be selected in the 2nd round by Helsinki, but by that point I had once again run out of steam and ended up falling off as an inactive. From there, because I was still young and dumb, I figured nobody would want to touch any of my future players with a 10 foot pole because of my history of going inactive, so when I wanted to give the VHL a third shot I decided to come back with a new alias rather than using my old username.

Tl;dr my first couple VHL players didn’t go well and I worried I wouldn’t be taken seriously as a user and a potential player unless I re-joined the league with an alias. My third attempt at a player, Joey Clarence, was part of the S18 Superdraft that probably played a massive part in helping the VHL last past some of the doom and gloom that comes along with being a league driven by about 30 active members or so. Still, despite the fact that I was actually earning TPE at a strong rate, because I was in the eyes of others a new member in a draft full of good recreates, and because of the fact that I was a goalie in such a strong goalie draft, I wasn’t seeing a lot of attention being paid to my own player. I also decided that it’d be good to try to switch things up and have some fun with stuff considering playing things more as myself the first couple times around resulted in me getting bored pretty quickly.

So, I ended up going around to threads, generally media spots but at times just any thread at all, that didn’t mention Joey Clarence somewhere within them, and just commenting “šnubbed”. I did it quite a few times, just fucking around, and eventually people took notice. It was kind of hard not to when being the best team meant you had 6 active members on your team; when that’s your league setup, one person commenting the same thing in tens of threads a week is going to get peoples’ attention. Eventually the commissioner of the league, Slobo, who himself was apparently running quite a few multis to make the VHL’s rough active user numbers look a little less rough, decided to make a podcast talking about some things going on in the league. In the podcast he mentioned how annoying he found the whole “šnubbed” thing to be, and somewhere within that he mentioned FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY. From there, the word filter was put onto the forum and longtime members rejoiced every time a new member would use the word FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY somewhere in a media spot or a post only to be flabbergasted by what it changed to.

So yeah, that’s really it. I annoyed some people by trying to be a troll and putting FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY in threads all over the league and eventually the filter to make it FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY was implemented and subsequently carried over to every new iteration of the VHL forum that came along after. My attempts to continue trolling ended with me outing myself pretty stupidly (@JardyB10 was the one to figure it out), Joey Clarence ended up being one of the last active players selected in S18 but I stayed active and had a strong career, then went on to make my first and only VHL Hall of Famer on my next player with Tukka Reikkinen.

    1. As we near the trade deadline, how do you think your player has performed this far?

I think Jigglejawns has played pretty well so far, although he seems to have tapered off a little bit.

    2. What has our strength been this season as a team?

Looks like we've done a good job this season so far of spreading the love. Everybody's contributing well.

    3. Have you done your theme week post yet?

    Yep, just finished it.

I like that the theme week this week is about FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY, primarily because you can write the word FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY and the site will automatically turn your one word into six words. Now that’s efficiency. Of course, I’m not going to play some crazy games here and write like a 100 word VHL.com where I just go FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY and easily cheese the word mark like that. I probably could, but in this case, I’m not going to. I’ll still write it out to be 150 words prior to the filter doing its thing. But now it’s just going to look like I really went above and beyond, getting like 200 or more words put into this blurb that’s loosely based around the FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY word filter. My cat tried to jump on my lap but I was too close to my desk and she could only stand on my stomach; she wasn’t a big fan of that. Anyways, Aeschylus Jigglejawns CXXXVII II is doing pretty good, he even passed 200 TPE this week so he will be graduating to the VHLE next season.
