The Dustin Funk Trophy, our next award,  celebrates the most improved player in the VHL, and it's an award that is being adjusted somewhat this season. Previously, candidates for the award were selected by the ever watchful eye of @Victor, and, well, they still are. But each VHL General Manager can nominate their own candidate, making absolutely sure that each player deemed to be deserving isn't left out of the discussion by the Awards Committee. Fifteen of the sixteen VHL teams submitted nominees, leading to a crowded field, but ultimately, it was narrowed down to five finalists:

:war: (S76) Aloe Dear (WAR) - 40G, 38A, 78P, 16, 76PIM, 150HIT, 37SB

:war: (S77) Aloe Dear (WAR) - 43G, 69A, 112P, 34, 100PIM, 194HIT, 30SB

:sea: (S77) Hex Rose (SEA) - 26G, 36A, 62P, 24, 7PIM, 21HIT, 17SB

Five very deserving players who majorly stepped up their games in Season 77, but who elevated their standing the most in the eyes of the Awards Committee? The winner of the Dustin Funk Trophy is...

Julian Nousiainen!!

As a solid role player for the London United the first three seasons of his career, Nousiainen exploded into prominence in Season 77, leading a team with players such as Mikko Lahtinen @Beketov, Erik Killinger @Peace, The Terrible Trivium @der meister, and Alec Volchenkov @SirRupertBarnes in points with 97. London is a team looking to break through just as the other expansion teams have, and Nousiainen may have just turned into the type of player that can lead the United to championship glory.

Congratulations to Julian Nousiainen, winner of the Dustin Funk Trophy as the VHL's most improved player!

The Scott Boulet Trophy is an award that celebrates the top two-way forward in the VHL, and for three straight seasons, that has been Mikko Lahtinen @Beketov. Cementing himself as the dominant power forward of his era, he finds himself in position to even further cement his legacy by becoming just the third player in VHL history to win a fourth consecutive Scott Boulet Trophy, along with David Smalling @Knight and Lord Karnage @boubabi. Elite company for sure, but there's no shortage of competition this season! Let's meet our finalists:

:que: Onde Sandstrom (VAN) - 42G, 60A, 102P, 11, 133PIM, 329HIT, 39SB

:ldn: Mikko Lahtinen (LDN) - 40G, 51A, 91P, 33, 155PIM, 379HIT, 25SB

:dcd: Groovy Dood (DCD) - 46G, 60A, 106P, -4, 119PIM, 341HIT, 43SB

:sea: Jim Bob (SEA) - 48G, 55A, 103P, 26, 199PIM, 332HIT, 21SB

:chi: Christian Mingle (CHI) - 35G, 45A, 80P, 28, 182PIM, 353HIT, 33SB, 58.42FO%, 3309FOT

Is there any stopping Mikko Lahtinen's march towards VHL history? The answer lies beyond this spoiler tag.

Groovy Dood @bigAL!

No fourpeat for Lahtinen, as we have a new Scott Boulet Trophy winner in Groovy Dood!! It was largely a season to forget for fans of the DC Dragons, but for Dood, it was a memorable season for him. Scoring over 100 points, racking up 341 hits, and blocking 43 shots made him a bright spot in a season that the Dragons sure wanted more out of, but at least they now move forward with a Scott Boulet Trophy winner leading the charge! @bigAL is also one of the biggest fans of the VHL Awards Show, and I'm absolutely delighted to hand over some prestigious hardware to him tonight!!

Congratulations to Groovy Dood, the winner of the Scott Boulet Trophy!!

The Alexander Valiq Trophy is awarded to the VHL's top offensive defenseman, and while the VHL didn't see Condor Adrienne-esque @OrbitingDeath  numbers, we still saw blue liners jumping in and creating plenty of offense this season. Let's take a look at the VHL's top performers from the blue line this season:

:chi: Spencer Elsby (CHI) - 21G, 72A, 93P, 34, 64PIM, 114HIT, 173SB

:dav: Tyler Walker (DAV) - 25G, 65A, 90P, -35, 208PIM, 290HIT, 165SB

:ldn: Erik Killinger (LDN) - 26G, 60A, 86P, 30, 122PIM, 177HIT, 182SB

:war: Latrell Mitchell (WAR) - 23G, 63A, 86P, 22, 108PIM, 158HIT, 165SB

Spencer Elsby!! @Spence King

Leading all VHL defensemen with 93 points, Elsby's staggering 72 assists, on top of scoring 21 goals, simply proved to be too much for the Awards Committee to look past this season. Leading the nominees in points doesn't always mean you get to take home the Valiq, but it certainly helps, and Elsby certainly isn't about to complain. Very well-deserved award for a player and member that always keeps plugging away!

Congratulations to Spencer Elsby, winner of the Alexander Valiq Trophy!!

On the other hand, the Jake Wylde Trophy is an award recognizing the best defensive defenseman in the league, a truly thankless and overlooked role in the VHL. In a league dominated by scoring, it takes a special player to commit yourself to defensive excellence. While this group is also a talented one offensively, for the Jake Wylde Trophy, only the defensive statistics matter. Our finalists are...

:ldn: Erik Killinger (LDN) - 26G, 60A, 86P, 30, 122PIM, 177HIT, 182SB

:war: Latrell Mitchell (WAR) - 23G, 63A, 86P, 22, 108PIM, 158HIT, 165SB

:dav: Tyler Walker (DAV) - 25G, 65A, 90P, -35, 208PIM, 290HIT, 165SB

Latrell Mitchell @dasboot took home the Wylde in Season 76, can he make it two in a row?

Erik Killinger!! @Peace

He may have come up a little short in the vote for the Valiq, but with 182 blocked shots, 177 hits, and a +30, Erik Killinger takes home the Wylde Trophy as consolation. Tyler Walker @Advantage had an outstanding season, but his massive minus rating courtesy of Davos made it a bit too much for some of the members of the Awards Committee to select him instead. Killinger was a powerhouse last season, and followed it up with more of the same, earning the former forward some well-deserved prestige.

Congratulations to Erik Killinger, the winner of the Jake Wylde Trophy!!

On now to one of the most meaningful awards the VHL has to offer: the Frederik Elmebeck Trophy. Named in the honor of Frederik Elmebeck, a wonderful man who engaged our community with incredible passion and positivity before he was taken from us all far too soon, this award is to honor the lasting legacy of Elmebeck by recognizing the member who best served the VHL community. This season, the nominees, as selected by you, the VHL community, are:

@dlamb, for stepping up and absolutely crushing it as the new GM of the Ottawa Lynx!

@GustavMattias, for being the lovable Grand Poobah of the Town of Salem!

@rjfryman, for his tireless work on pre and post draft rankings, and many, many behind the scenes activities!

@Sonnet, for being the brain behind the scenes of the VHL merch store!

@Spartan, for being an outstanding contributor towards league retention, and keeping the Moscow Menace rolling along!

Congratulations to all of our nominees! The VHL community has become what it is today in large part to the endless contributions that members like you have made, and that is the secret to the enduring success of the VHL itself. The sims are what brought us here, but it’s members like all of you that keep us here. The lasting spirit of Elmebeck’s legacy resonates in everything you do, and I personally can’t thank you enough for all the great things you do here.

The votes have been tallied, and the winner of the Season 77 Frederik Elmebeck Trophy winner is…

@rjfryman!!

A tireless worker behind the scenes, RJ has been nominated for the Frederik Elmebeck Trophy every single season after it was created, and he finally gets to take it home this time! New members to the VHL become familiar with him right away, especially now that he’s become the General Manager of the Houston Bulls. His tireless work towards updating pre and post-draft rankings, however, is a new member’s first glimpse into the competition ahead of them in the VHL, and it has largely gone unsung. No longer, however, as rjfryman is the Season 77 Frederik Elmebeck Trophy winner!!

Thank you, RJ, and congratulations!!

The Sterling Labatte Trophy, one of the most prestigious awards in the league, is awarded to the player deemed to be the best defenseman in the VHL. For a blue liner looking to achieve immortality in the VHL Hall of Fame, you don't just need to win a Labatte Trophy… you need to win it multiple times. All of our finalists, however, are on the hunt for their first Labatte Trophy:

:ldn: Erik Killinger (LDN) - 26G, 60A, 86P, 30, 122PIM, 177HIT, 182SB

:chi: Spencer Elsby (CHI) - 21G, 72A, 93P, 34, 64PIM, 114HIT, 173SB

:chi: Matty Socks (CHI) - 24G, 60A, 84P, 13, 112PIM, 132HIT, 179SB

:war: Latrell Mitchell (WAR) - 23G, 63A, 86P, 22, 108PIM, 158HIT, 165SB

:dav: Tyler Walker (DAV) - 25G, 65A, 90P, -35, 208PIM, 290HIT, 165SB

Which one of these talented blue liners is taking that first step towards enshrinement in the VHL Hall of Fame tonight?

Erik Killinger!! @Peace

After being narrowly edged out for the Valiq, Killinger doubles down and departs the award show with perhaps the biggest two trophies in the VHL for defensemen. It's yet another award for London's rapidly-expanding trophy case, and for good reason: Killinger proved to be the most rounded defender on the list, and the Awards Committee also agreed with that sentiment.

Congratulations to Erik Killinger, winner of the Sterling Labatte Trophy!!

Up next, it's the Aidan Shaw Trophy, awarded to the top goaltender in the VHL. Three candidates staked their claims to be the VHL's best goaler:

:prg: Grekkark Gyrfalcon (PRG) - 69GP, 37-26-5, 0.925SV%, 2.99GAA, 2SO, 2747SA

:hel: Zamboni Driver (HSK) - 64GP, 36-24-4, 0.921SV%, 2.96GAA, 3SO, 2418SA

:la:Doug Dimmadome (LAS) - 64GP, 36-23-4, 0.923SV%, 2.89GAA, 2SO, 2355SA

Statistically, strong cases could be made for any of the three, yet the Awards Committee saw this one very differently.

Grekkark Gyrfalcon!! @Sharkstrong

Extra games, yes, but that still kept him in the race, as Gyrfalcon just seemed to be the wall that the Prague Phantoms needed to take that next step towards being a contending club. Even if the Phantoms couldn't score, Gyrfalcon was capable of carrying Prague to close victories. Even with those controversial extra starts, the Awards Committee saw it that Gyrfalcon, even with them, was still the top choice by quite a wide margin. However, next season he will hopefully avoid being overworked.

Congratulations to Grekkark Gyrfalcon, the winner of the Season 77 Aidan Shaw Trophy!!

The VHLM delivered quite a lot of promising future stars through the Season 77 VHL Entry Draft, along with some prospects from past drafts making their pro debuts in Season 77 as well. Teams such as the Moscow Menace and HC Davos Dynamo leaned heavily on rookies this year, but will one of their guys take home the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as the best rookie in the VHL? Zeedayno Chara @Jubis of the New York Americans continued the Big Apple’s tradition of fielding quality rookies, as he established himself as a steady, physical two-way defenseman. Javad Kamkar @Parriyah9374, a Season 76 draftee, made his pro debut with the Vancouver Wolves this season and quickly turned some heads, fitting right in with strong two-way play, showing no fear with 171 shots blocked! Olof Samuelsson @Azlan may not have been the second coming of Roque Davis @Josh in Davos, but he brought his own game with him. A punishing defender comfortable playing the body in his own zone, along with a keen eye for setting up scoring plays have the bar raised high for him with the Dynamo. The two gems of Moscow’s Season 77 draft class, Paul Atreides @Mr_Hatter and Duncan Idaho @OrbitingDeath  were the two top scorers of Season 77’s rookie class, with Atreides being the only rookie to surpass 60 points. Idaho’s two-way play as a forward has many labeling him as a future Scott Boulet Trophy contender as well.

Let's find out who will be taking home the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy this season! Your winner, and top rookie of the VHL, is...

Duncan Idaho!

Voters were impressed with both of Moscow’s top-flight rookies, but ultimately, the strong, physical presence of Idaho, along with similar offensive production to Atreides gave him the nod as the VHL’s top rookie. OrbitingDeath, fresh after having Condor Adrienne inducted into the VHL Hall of Fame, appears to have another hit on his hands with Duncan Idaho, who begins his career as the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner as Season 77’s top rookie!

Congratulations to Duncan Idaho, your Season 77 Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner!

We've honored the players, now let's take a moment to give recognition to the guys that put those players on the ice: the General Managers!! One of the more subjective awards in the VHL, the David Knight Trophy is awarded annually to the top GM in the VHL each year, with guidelines/beliefs that seem to very rapidly change. The finalists this season are:

:war: Damien Walec @.sniffuM - Warsaw

:sea: Blake Campbell @Banackock - Seattle

:ldn: Roger McWolf III @McWolf - London

:hel: Julian Borwinn @Jubo - Helsinki

So, who won based off of an argument that didn't apply last season, surely infuriating another candidate? Let's end that suspense right now.

The winner, and top suit of Season 77, is...

Roger McWolf!! @McWolf

With a busy off-season that consisted of shedding enough cap space to make the big trades it did, Roger McWolf turned London from a league doormat to a legitimate force in the VHL this season, the trophy case of the United continues to expand courtesy of McWolf, and it's only just starting to kick off the dust!

Congratulations to Roger McWolf, your Season 77 David Knight Trophy winner as the top General Manager in the VHL!
