We move on now to an award that is quickly becoming one of the VHL's most prestigious: the Frederik Elmebeck Trophy. Named in the honor of Frederik Elmebeck, a wonderful man who engaged our community with incredible passion and positivity before he was taken from us all far too soon, this award is to honor the lasting legacy of Elmebeck by recognizing the member who best served the VHL community. This season, the nominees, as selected by you, the VHL community, are:

@bigAL, as the commissioner of the WJC, a dedicated hype man, one of the biggest fans of the VSN Awards Show, the newest VHL commissioner, and all around just a groovy dood.

@Domg5, who has taken on both the VHFL and the Fantasy Zone as a whole, along with being a dedicated and helpful member of the league as a whole.

@JardyB10, because we’re so happy he’s back with us, and for injecting some life and energy back into the forums along with his podcasts!

@KaleebtheMighty, the energetic GM of the Philadelphia Reapers, and an absolute logo creating machine for the fledgling VHLE!

Congratulations to all of our nominees! The VHL community has become what it is today in large part to the endless contributions that members like you have made, and that is the secret to the enduring success of the VHL itself. The sims are what brought us here, but it’s members like all of you that keep us here. The lasting spirit of Elmebeck’s legacy resonates in everything you do, and I personally can’t thank you enough for all the great things you do here.

The votes have been tallied, and the winner of the Season 78 Frederik Elmebeck Trophy winner is…

Spoiler

@KaleebtheMighty!!

With all the excitement for the VHLE, a lot of it can be traced back to the fact that it means some historic franchises are returning, and some will be brand new teams. The logos, however, will be fresh, and the major force behind that has been Kaleeb! I still love the Berlin Steel logo with the Tiger I tank, public opinion be damned, and even when you factor out his graphical work (although I’m not sure why you would), he’s done phenomenal work with the Philadelphia Reapers in the VHLM. He’s a lightning rod for positive influence and energy for the VHL, and that makes him more than worthy of joining the fraternity of Frederik Elmebeck Trophy winners!

Thank you Kaleeb, and congratulations!!

YESSSSS @KaleebtheMighty! This is the most important award of the night, and you earned it buddy. The VHLE wouldn't have been nearly as hype without you, thanks for getting everyone on board with it. The way you handled the "constructive" criticism and pushback was admirable. Your artwork is friggin unreal. Thanks for being you :)

After a highly-touted draft class in Season 78, the time has come now for one of this season's rookies to earn the ultimate bragging rights by being awarded the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy, awarded to the VHL's top rookie! The Moscow Menace had a strong crop of rookies, and Grapes @Grapes-Tophat_Clan- was among the top rookie forwards, showing promise as a future Boulet contender with 253 hits and 34 points. Riga may have had a frustrating year, but Jan Hlozek @Bojovnik was a bright spot. The rookie defenseman contributed 50 points and 115 blocked shots to establish himself as someone the Reign can build upon moving forward. The first overall pick, Hard Markinson @STZ delivered on the lofty hype placed upon him, leading all rookies with 56 points, along with 250 hits and an absurd 180 blocked shots for the Moscow Menace. Tui Sova @v.2 was one of just three rookies to crack 40 points, as the Malmo Nighthawks' blueliner scored 40 points, adding 148 hits and blocking 169 shots to make an immediate impact. Lastly, we have Luc Tessier @KC15, the highest-scoring rookie forward this season with 37 points for the HC Davos Dynamo.

Which rookie is taking home the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy this season? Your winner, and top rookie of the VHL, is...

Hard Markinson!

It’s an unanimous decision, with all eleven votes going to Hard Markinson!! The #1 overall pick delivered upon the hype with Moscow, and unsurprisingly brings home the hardware to back it up! A legendary builder in STZ already has his latest player on track for greatness, but will it continue? More than likely, if historical trends are to be believed. It’s just what he does!

Congratulations to Hard Markinson, your Season 78 Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner!

The Dustin Funk Trophy, our next award,  celebrates the most improved player in the VHL. Each VHL General Manager has the option to nominate their own candidate, making absolutely sure that each player deemed to be deserving wasn't inadvertently left out of the discussion by the Awards Committee. Naturally, this led to a bit of a crowded field, but there were four candidates who stood out above the rest, and became this season's finalists:

Chris Reynolds :war: @Crstats23

S77: 29G, 41A, 70P, 21, 75PIM, 105HIT, 14SB

S78: 46G, 55A, 101P, 24, 49PIM, 97HIT, 17SB

Brendan Telker :mal: @Telkster

S77: 24G, 26A, 50P, -7, 6PIM, 24HIT, 24SB

S78: 43G, 47A, 90P, 8, 29PIM, 34HIT, 48SB

Artem Tretiak :mal: @Molholt

S77: 55GP, 20-29-5, 0.912SV%, 3.88GAA, 1SO, 2331SA

S78: 62GP, 30-27-5, 0.924SV%, 3.15GAA, 3SO, 2577SA

Linus Zetterstrom :rig: @Ledge and Dairy

S77: 14G, 40A, 54P, -11, 24PIM, 28HIT, 174SB

S78: 16G, 70A, 86P, 0, 20PIM, 25HIT, 176SB

Four players majorly stepped up their game in Season 78, and have more than earned their way onto the ballot this year! Which one, however, made the biggest leap in the eyes of the Awards Committee?

The winner of the Dustin Funk Trophy is...

Brendan Telker!!

Telker went from a middling player on a team struggling to find their place in the European Conference to one who took the Nighthawks on a ride to the playoffs on the heels of a big-time breakout season. Rocketing up nearly 20 goals on his previous season, Telker scored a full 40 points more than a season prior, his +/- doubled, and so did the number of shots he blocked! It’s hard to imagine Malmo having the season they did without Brendan Telker, making him a much-deserved recipient of the Dustin Funk Trophy!!

Congratulations to Brendan Telker, winner of the Dustin Funk Trophy as the VHL's most improved player!

The Scott Boulet Trophy is an iconic award that celebrates the top two-way forward in the VHL, the nitty-gritty players that are beloved in VHFL drafts and on their respective teams for their dominant play in both ends of the ice. Power forwards have enjoyed considerable success winning the Scott Boulet Trophy, most notably Mikko Lahtinen @Beketov winning three straight from Season 74 to Season 76. Last season's Scott Boulet Trophy winner, Groovy Dood @bigAL, turned in another strong season, with 42 goals, 96 total points, 337 hits, and blocked 34 shots. Christian Mingle @Quik ramped up his offensive production, with 49 goals and 105 total points, 269 hits, and 44 shots blocked. Onde Sandstrom @fonziGG split his time between Vancouver and London, recording 39 goals and 97 points, 324 hits, and blocked 42 shots. Lastly, Robin Winter @Sonnet led the VHL in goals with 50, scoring 108 total points, but was also a physical presence with 273 hits and 30 shots blocked as well.

Will it be two in a row for Groovy Dood, or will we have a new top two-way player crowned? Let's find out… the winner of the Scott Boulet Trophy is...

Spoiler

trophy_frankjselkelg_AxwpyRu.jpg

Groovy Dood!

He who dethroned Mikko Lahtinen’s three year reign as the Scott Boulet Trophy winner is now just one more Boulet win away from duplicating that feat! It’s a whirlwind for bigAL, who is a newly-minted VHL Commissioner, a back-to-back Scott Boulet Trophy winner, and he’s trying to hang me in Town of Salem. But tonight, it’s another dominant season of offensive prowess and physical brutality that gets the biggest fan of the VHL Awards Show into the spotlight tonight!

Congratulations to Groovy Dood, the winner of the Scott Boulet Trophy!!

Groovy Dood: 7, Robin Winter: 3, Onde Sandstrom: 1

The Alexander Valiq Trophy is awarded to the VHL's top offensive defenseman, and we had an incredibly tight race for this award in Season 78, with five finalists finishing within two points of each other. Spencer Elsby @Spence King tallied 16 goals and a very nice 69 assists for 85 points, with a +13. Chris Hylands @hylands scored 19 goals and a still quality 68 assists for 87 points, tops in the VHL, finishing +6. Kosmo Kramerev @Mongoose87 also scored 19 goals, recording 66 assists to finish with 85 points and a -6 rating. Matty Socks @fishy tallied 18 goals, along with 68 assists for 86 points and an impressive +27 rating. Finally, Linus Zetterstrom @Ledge and Dairy potted 16 goals, but posted 70 assists to record 86 points, finishing with an even rating.

Very tight competition this season, with any of these five candidates staking a worthy claim to the Alexander Valiq Trophy, but who stood out the most? The winner is...

Spoiler

trophy_billmastersonlg_H6nsjgs.jpg

Chris Hylands!!

It wasn’t unanimous, but at the same time, an unsurprising victory here for Chris Hylands! He set the standard for offensive production from the blue line this season, and while he didn’t score the most goals or pot the most assists by a defensemen, he was the one who overall did it the best out of all of the VHL’s blue liners. No way around it, this ultimately was Hyland’s to lose, and he didn’t dare do so!

Congratulations to Chris Hylands, winner of the Alexander Valiq Trophy!

Voting:

Chris Hylands: 9, Matty Socks: 2

we do have the thickest skin and give out the most punishing hits, so the Boulet is the perfect award for us honestly

The Jake Wylde Trophy, on the other hand, is an award recognizing the best defensive defenseman in the league, a truly thankless and overlooked role in the VHL. However, this season we've got six finalists staking claim for the Wylde! The aptly-named L @gorlab contributed 244 hits, along with 164 shots blocked and a +13. Alex Letang @Spartan racked up 264 hits, blocking 139 shots and tallying a +21 rating. Randy Marsh @oilmandan was a dominant physical presence, racking up 312 hits and blocking 162 shots, and recording a +21 rating. Robin Galante Nilsson @RomanesEuntDomus tallied 153 hits, but was seemingly a magnet for the puck, blocking an unhealthy 229 shots and recording a -23 rating. Cowboy Prout @Prout tallied 168 hits, blocked 189 shots, and recorded the second best +/- in the VHL with a +29. Lastly, General Zod @Matt_O recorded 282 hits and 140 blocked shots, with a -3 rating on the season.

Who made the biggest mark in their own zone this season? The winner of the Season 78 Jake Wylde Trophy is...

Randy Marsh!

More often than not, Randy Marsh was the type of defenseman this season who didn’t hear no bell. Very dependable with and without the puck, Marsh was an absolute nightmare for opposing teams to deal with, whether he leveled the puck carrier or took away the shooting lane, he was an absolute nuisance to opposing forwards. Exactly what you look for in a Jake Wylde Trophy winner!

Congratulations to Randy Marsh, your Jake Wylde Trophy winner as the VHL's top defensive defenseman!

The Sterling Labatte Trophy, one of the most prestigious awards in the league, is awarded to the player deemed to be the best defenseman in the VHL. For a blue liner looking to achieve immortality in the VHL Hall of Fame, you don't just need to win a Labatte Trophy… you need to win it multiple times. We had plenty of candidates for the previous two awards, but the Awards Committee was able to narrow it down to four blue liners worthy of being a Sterling Labatte Trophy winner. Chris Hylands @hylands led all defensemen with 87 points, and blocked 187 shots, establishing dominance across the ice. L @gorlab tallied 75 points, including 22 goals, and racked up 244 hits and 144 blocked shots in a gritty campaign. Alex Letang @Spartan contributed in the offensive zone with 76 points and a +21, and in his own zone racked up 264 hits and 139 shots blocked in a strong all-around season. James Rose @MattyIce also provided a strong two-way game you'd expect from a veteran player, with 82 points and a +5 rating, along with 217 hits and 143 blocked shots.

Who's the top defenseman in the VHL this season? The winner of the Sterling Labatte Trophy is...

Spoiler

trophy_norrislg.jpg

Chris Hylands!!

As it turns out, not only was Chris Hylands the standard for scoring from the blue line this season, he was the overall golden standard for defensemen this season. He may not have swept the big three awards for defensemen, but he was the clear choice as the best overall defenseman this season with an overwhelming win from the Awards Committee!

Congratulations to Chris Hylands, your Season 78 Sterling Labatte Trophy winner!!

Voting:

Chris Hylands: 9, L: 1, Alex Letang: 1
