Skor McFleury playing in a summer league.

After joining the Mexico City Kings last season, Skor McFleury demonstrated their playmaking ability by producing 13 assists in 20 games played during the regular season. McFleury would add to that by scoring 3 goals for a total of 16 points in 20 games. Additionally, it is also important to note that McFleury was a +22 and also had 14 hits and 12 shots blocked. In the playoffs McFleury’s game fell flat as they had only 4 points in 11 games.

On the surface McFleury is a solid puck-moving defensemen, with some physical upside, this is seen with their assists per game played being higher than a majority of the league. Furthermore, McFleury will not hesitate to shoot the puck and is always looking for ways to create offense. Although it should be stated as while Johnston does shoot the puck a lot for a defenseman (36 shots last season) they have a surprisingly high shooting percentage for a defensemen (8.33%), this is indicative of them potentially taking more high quality shots as opposed to them just throwing the puck on net and hoping it finds it’s way in. As of right now it really does look like Skor McFleury does have the makings of a elite offensive defensemen with some defensive upside.

With that being said, they are set to play in a higher skill league this coming season in the VHLE and we will likely see their numbers take a significant hit as they will be one of the lower end defensemen in the league to start the season but should improve over the course of it to hopefully have a significant impact come playoffs.

McFleury’s game right now isn’t all that perfect though as they do lack defensive positioning and are often caught up ice following a rush. It almost seems like they get confused and think that they are a forward. Even in their defensive zone, they can often be seen trying to cheat the play a little bit and looking for a quick breakout while the other team still has possession of the puck. This is a massive red flag that should not be taken lightly and could very well be the reason we see them struggle in the VHLE.

Skor McFleury, while showing signs of offensive brilliance has a long way to go before they are ready for the next level as they are not quite prepared for the defensive side of the game and could very well get smothered by the VHL’s high level offense.
