Rookie Hockey Cards

My dad has a rookie Gretzky card, it has a dark blue border.  I'm not sure of the exact make or what makes it so special but one was sold recently for something like one Million dollars.  We brought it to an appraiser recently and it turns out it has a TINY PRACTICALLY MINUSCULE fold in the corner from him putting it in a laminate binder and that makes it pretty much worthless.

Other than that, I have Lemieux rookie card that I got signed by him when I saw him at a box when my family went to a game in Pittsburgh, and a Brodeur rookie card.

Your dads Gretzky card will be a 79-80 Opeechee one.

Regardless what that appraiser said, it would still be worth something on the market as it's an original from that time.

In had mine appraised quite a few years ago,and due to the manufacturing cut the right  boarder is a little thinner then the left side. This devalued it but I was told it was VG condition and worth  $300-$400 .

Aw man that's sweet having Lemieux's card. And it's signed! You should get it appraised.I think In also may have Brodeurs

Maybe I'll throw a pic up of my Gretz card here later.

I collected cards for quite a few years when I was a kid (my dad would buy boxes with packs in them and give me a pack everyday.) So I got Upper deck and Victory cards from '05-'06 all the way up to '11-'12. Last time I checked I think the Letang rookie card was worth some money, also got guys like toews, kane and many more along with those game jersey worn cards and all the specialist ones. There all sitting in binders with sleeves in boxes so one day I hope I will be able to sell them aha.

But I also have a collection of older cards that were my Grandmas, in that collection sits the 79-80 gretz card, one of the corners on it is a little separated so not in mint condition but still a sick card nonetheless. The only card I've gotten signed was a Gino Odjick card from when he was on the Canucks that I got from a random pack and he just turned to be a family friend.

My suggestion to both of you is keep all your cards.Unless your getting the million dollar sale for a card.Or sell em to me for cheap! :)

Kes,make sure you keep that Gretz card because regardless of shape they're collectable. And Opeechee is a highly sought after set.

My friend hounded me for years to sell my Gretz and other cards to him and I wouldn't.He's a crazy fuck,as he's spent over $10k for all his sets.

He finally scored a Gretzky rookie and it cost him close to $ 2000.Fuckin nuts man.

  • 2 years later...

I half-assed collected in my youth but it wasn't anywhere near hobby level and basically all garbage cards in terms of value.

Now as an adult with disposable income I've gotten back into the hobby, starting a personal collection of current/historical Avs. I'll be heavily investing in Makar. I've already got a small grip of cards like his 19-20 UD Series 1 Canvas young guns (which is already getting to be a $150 CAD card) and a bunch of Team Canada jersey / serial'd cards. I'll definitely be going all the way in on any/every makar young guns when 19-20 UD Series 2 drops. I'm trying to avoid getting into packs/breaks, and just buying the raw cards I want in the secondary market.

I have the entire 2011/12 Ice collection with all /99 rookies - Nuge was selling for 1000$ back in the day... not anymore.

I also have a McDavid Erie Otters Rookie Auto Patch Card /10

Not many rookie ones I have are holding any value or they mass produce so it's a shame unless I splurge on hobby boxes - way too much to but as a student though

yeaaa, I've been hesitant to really go in, seems like Upper Deck is slimy af in terms of print run numbers, and they seem to hold all the licensing for NHL rn. Yeah, i think in like 90% of cases, cards really are not a good investment vehicle, but they do have some enjoy-ability/hobby aspect to them, which is worth something in the long run.  I just think Makar is going to be a Crosby/McDavid tier of D-man, but there is already a huge inflation on the value of his rookie cards.

I've been thinking of monitoring jobs @ UD/Topps.

Doesn't seem like it's too difficult to pull off tbh, some of these card designs are really weak/lazy AF.

i have a Auston Matthews SP Authentic RC, i'd say is my best card. value on that bad boy is $1500 CDN.

I have been quite lucky this year with Artifacts. Pulled a Alex Ovechkin /10 Auto worth probably 300-500 CDN depending on who wants to buy and a Mario Lemieux /28 worth the same 300-500. i put those away in my not trading or selling pile.

That pile if i had to put an estimate on would be around 7500-8000 bucks.
