S60 Hall of Fame Induction

Each season the VHL honours its past players and members by selecting the elite few who will enter the vaunted Hall of Fame. This season we present two new players and a new builder in the status of mythology within it's walls. However, this season we also say goodbye to one of it's potential members. Without further adieu, I present the Season 60 VHL Hall of Fame Induction:

 

The first order of business to get out of the way is that removal I spoke of. The BOG voted last year to enact rules which would allow people to be removed from the ballot. Only 1 player (maximum) per year will be removed and the vote the vote to remove will only take place after 15 seasons of HoF eligibility have passed. One such vote took place this off-season with Mike Szatkowski Jr. being ultimately removed from future Hall of Fame ballots. It is with regret that this vote was made but ultimately it is one we established that needed to be made.

 

Moving onto happier news, here are the S60 inductees!

One Continental Cup (S56)

It should come as no surprise to anyone who witnessed @STZ's most recently retired player in net that he now resides in the Hall of Fame as a first ballot decision. DeGrath was a dominant force over 8 seasons in the VHL winning the Top goalie award 3 times as well as adding the league's first ever Clegane award and bringing home both the Cambell and Slobo awards in Season 55. It is rare for a goalie this dominant to not receive a Continental cup but for DeGrath it as completely unnecessary as well. With near record breaking numbers across the board on his statistics DeGrath had punched his Hall of Fame ticket many seasons before his eventual retirement and didn't slow down in the slightest, ultimately winning his Clean and third Shaw in his final season. It is with great honour that we induct Rhett DeGrath as a first ballot Hall of Famer.

 

However, DeGrath is not the only first ballot player this season! When making the ballot Fabio Jokinen was nearly left off but it's impossible to deny the kind of career @jRuutu had with the defenseman. With the VHL becoming more and more scoring oriented Jokinen decided not to fight fire with fire by becoming an offensive player. Instead he made it his mission to stop the offensive powerhouses of the VHL and stop them he did. After collecting his Continental Cup with Quebec in Season 56, the season he also brought home his first top D award, Jokinen would move on to win another Top D award as well as the inaugural top defensive D award. His points column may not be near the top for defensive players but he strived to punish opposing forwards and punish them he did with massive hits and shots blocked. Joking may not have been the kind of player you saw celebrating goals very often but he was essential to the success of his clubs. For that reason, he now gets his day in the sun amongst the VHL greats in the Hall of Fame.

It may seem as if Will is still young blood in the VHL but he has in fact been around for over a third of the league's existence. In that time he has made his mark continuously on the VHL landscape. He impressed us as a First Gen and quickly became a VHL GM but he certainly did not stop there. Will has taken on many rolls in the VHL from GM, to BOG, to simmer, and ultimately to commissioner. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if I was missing some. One roll that may also go unnoticed by some but certainly has not gone unnoticed behind the scenes is how much work Will has put into the new VHL Portal. The idea came from Devise and the design from Beketov but Will brought the Portal to life in more ways than anyone could have possibly imagined. For not only keeping the VHL going in the present but also pushing it toward the future, Will finds himself a place in the VHL Builder Hall of Fame.
