Prologue:

 

If you look up the name Joesph Bassolino on the world wide web, it will likely tell you the person with that namesake has passed on. While that ladies and gentleman is fake news, a lie made up by Bassolino to get away from the hussle and bussle of his hectic life. Bassolino was living in a downtown apartment in The Bronx, with Bassolino the only suite in the apartment with a toilet of his own. Bassolino came into some money shortly before faking his own death, and came up with many ideas of how to spend the money during the next few months. That’s until Bassolino came upon a late life dream he possibly now may be able to achieve. Bassolino never even told long time friend High Pitch Eric Bleaman of his plan, leaving everyone in his old life in the dust. Rest in peace to Joseph Bassolino, a.k.a. Joey Boots.

 

Growing Up - Early Years:

 

Joseph Bassolino was born to very supportive Jewish parents in the Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City. While their was a strong hockey community established before Bassolino was born, the family was super Jewish and never attended a hockey game, or watched a single period on television during the years that Bassolino lived at home with his parents. Like many Americans growing up, Bassolino took to American football growing up and spent the majority of his time in sports on the gridiron. Bassonlino continued playing football into high school, where at one point he got some phone calls from Division II schools. It was as Bassolino was entering his senior year that he got involved in with the wrong crowd, and found himself mixed up in different narcotics each night it seemed. Basssolino ended up getting himself kicked off the football team, and the downward spiral that was his life started. Bassolino stopped showing up at school after losing his spot on the football team, and Bassonlino started picking up odd jobs to score drugs. With Bassolino unable to keep a job due to his drug addiction, he was forced to go on Supplemental Security Income to meet his needs. It was around this time that radio personality Howard Stern joined WNBC in the afternoons.

Growing Up - Soon we’ll be thirty years old:

 

Bassolino became obsessed with Stern and his show on WNBC, tuning in everyday to hear what the show had to offer Bassolino and the rest of the New York fans. Bassolino started to take in more Rangers games a few years later when the likes of Brian Leech, Mike Richter, and Mike Gartner put on the red, white, and blue of the Rangers. Bassolino loved the great Madison Square Gardens, not only for the great quality hockey, and concerts that seemed to be in the Garden each week, but also for the great acoustics that the arena gave for Bassolino to yell what became his famous phrase. Bassolino became known in New York and eventually internationally, thanks to the twenty-four hour news channel that was hitting its peak thanks to the Gulf War, CNN. In between showing the fighting inside Iraq, Bassolino was the next hottest things as New York's finest was going after Bassolino for his obscene sayings during stoppages of play at the Rangers games.Wishing to use Bassolino as an example in hopes of deterring more copycats, the Judge laid down a tough punishment for Bassolino. Bassolino was given the choice of 10 years in jail, or 30 years of intern work for the New York Rangers. Given his currents situation, and not yet discovering that his sexual nature and afraid of becoming someones bitch in jail, Bassolino choose to work for the Rangers until 2017.  

 

Growing Up - Moving On:

 

During his time working for the Rangers Bassolino took every opportunity to get on the ice and help out in practice any way he could. Often Bassolino would find himself alone on the ice picking up the pucks and anything else left on the ice from practice. This is where Bassolino began to fall in love with hockey. Even though Bassolino was supposed to be punished by working for the Rangers, it was a blessing in disguise for Bassolino. During this time Bassolino was able to overcome his dug addictions, and was able to shed some pounds at the same time. As the years wore down on Bassolinos sentence he began to ponder more and more what he was going to do once he finished. It was during that time that Bassolino ran into then General Manager of another tenant of the Garden, Chis Miller, GM of the VHLs New York Americans. Miller talked to Bassolino about a possible job with the Americans once he was free to do as he pleased on the job front. After careful consideration Bassolino passed up the offer and told Miller of his plan to try his hand at joining the VHL as a center. OF course they both had a good laugh at this and Miller told Bassolino to show up the next day at seven in the morning if he still wanted the job. When Miller showed up the next morning Bassolino was no where to be found, the next time he would hear about the him would be when the HC Davos Dynamo took Bassolino in the Season Fifty-Nine VHL Entry Draft.

 

Growing Up - Hockey Night Tonight:

 

Bassolino was unable to get his paperwork settled with the Victory Hockey League in time to enter the Season Fifty-Eight VHLM Dispersal Draft, but thanks to signing with the Low Player Agency, Bassolino was able to sign quickly with the Yukon Rush. Bassolino has a terrible season with the Rush, not even cracking the twenty-five points barrier during what would be his one and only season in the VHLM. Despite the terrible season with the Rush, Bassolino was lucky enough to join the VHL in a season that saw a absolutely horrendous prospect pool. Bassolino was able to keep developing enough throughout the season to catch the eye of the HC Davos Dynamo scouting team. Bassolino was in the crowd in the beautiful Switzerland town with his best friend High Pitch Erik, and a few other members of the “Wack Pack”, when his name was called for the First Overall pick. After fifty years of not doing much and not amounting to anything, it was time for Bassolino to shine.

This was certainly a fun read. I was drawn in by the players unusual age (for a pro hockey player) and ties to the real life actor. Now a 4 year veteran of the VHL he has developed into a consistent performer for Davos following a less than stellar start in the VHLM. As a VHL hopeful myself I look forward to competing with or against Boots in the seasons to come.
