Name: Anderson LaVey

Position: LW

Age: 22

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 210 lbs

Birth Place: Youngstown, OH

Junior Hockey: Youngstown Phantoms (USHL)

Hockey Background:

Anderson LaVey is a lifetime Left Winger. He's spent 16 years playing in organized ice hockey. Currently playing in the United States Hockey League after being drafted by his hometown Youngstown Phantoms, Anderson is in the final year of eligibility and is looking to enter the VHL system. He was once regarded as a player to watch during his High School hockey tenure, but lack of direction and drive initially led him to be a Junior League lifer. Realizing his true potential during his run in Juniors, LaVey has turned his career in a positive direction and is looking to make an impact in his debut. He expects to be overlooked by most teams, but also expects to be an integral role player for whichever team he signs with.

PROS

Shooting Ability

LaVey relies on his ability to find the back of the net with a heavy slap shot, but he also has a way of finessing through defenders and finishing with a calculated backhander or a rising wrister. LaVey averaged 34 Power Play Goals last season based on his ability to find the net.

Rebound Scoring:

LaVey isn't afraid to get gritty and grind it out down low. Getting most of his goals off of rebounds and heads up hockey he definitely makes a difference in the slot. He's known to be a goalie pad's worst nightmare and can easily fill the best net keeper with regret after scoring on a rebound. He makes the best of every chance and it shows on the scorecard.

Shot Blocking:

LaVey is nowhere near a good defender, but it doesn't stop him from throwing his body on the line to keep the puck out of the net. Anderson has been seen since his younger days laying out on the ice and taking pucks to the ribs to avoid the other team getting an opportunity. His genuine fearlessness is both a blessing and a curse, he'll take a puck to the face and miss a few shifts before he lets a goal go in.

CONS

Attitude:

Coming from a "I was the man in high school hockey" background, Anderson forgets that he blew his opportunity. He comes off as brash and always wants to be the center of attention for his team, making him a headache to deal with for coaches and other role players. His play speaks for itself, but for some reason he always feels the need to also speak. Drawing penalties is common place for LaVey because of his mouth, but he also doesn't know when to stop instigating, which leads to more troubles further down the line.

Poor Passing Decisions:

While LaVey can sauce his passes and pull off pretty impressive moves to open lanes for other players, he sometimes causes turnovers due to his lack of awareness. He doesn't always turnover his passes, but he's been known to give up obvious turnovers every so often after not reading coverage on another player properly.

Style of Play:

LaVey can wake up on Tuesday and decide he's going to be a finesse player and deke his defenders into infamy but wake up on Wednesday in a bad mood and decide he's going to fight the biggest Defenseman on the other team. When he's on, he's on, but when he's slumping, he's slumping something fierce. After an 8 game point drought in his first year in the USHL, LaVey was given two game misconducts in the next two games for excessive intimidation. If there's an off ice issue between he and a teammate, LaVey will let it spill out on the ice and decide whether or not he will be the only shooter on his shift.

The Short Story:

Anderson LaVey is a loud mouth goal scoring rebound machine. He can't be recommended to a team with big egos and personalities as he will likely clash with the dynamic and throw a wrench into plans. However, a solid front office that is able to reel him in and focus him directly on hockey will benefit strongly from his abilities. A team looking to add grit and get more goals off the bounce would definitely benefit by adding him as long as he remains solely focused on hockey and not anything unrelated.
