Late-season Surge Not Enough to Send Vasteras to Playoffs

Cody Inko feels what Vasteras fans have been feeling for the past four seasons

VASTERAS, Sweden - A season of big highs and big lows was capped earlier this week; ending in pleasant surprises for some teams, and soul-crushing defeats for others. For the Vasteras Iron Eagles, S36 was one of growth stifled by inconsistency and chemistry issues. The team was not expected to make any noise at the start of the season, especially given that no major roster changes occurred in the off-season. However the Iron Eagles surprised many in the first half of the season, as they were propelled into playoff position by the stellar play of Zach Cuff, Eggly Bagelface, and Willem Janssen. The Iron Eagles managed to pull out wins against the high-octane Quebec City Meute, Toronto Legion, and the upstart HC Davos Dynamo. However, the team became aggressive in near the deadline, and traded away high picks and depth players in exchange for Keiji Toriyama, Cody Inko, and Lauris Prikulis, all of whom had a bit of difficulty acclimating to the team chemistry-wise. Whatever chemistry that the Iron Eagles had before the trades seemed to have transformed into mediocrity, as the Iron Eagles lost what was once a 16-point lead over the rebuilding/retooling Cologne Express; that lead turned into an eight point deficit late in the season. Not going down without a fight, the Iron Eagles managed to make up the deficit, earning 13 out of a possible 14 points in their last seven games before losing in the final game of the season to the playoff-bound Seattle Bears.
