JESSE WILSON - ROOKIE PROFILE

17 YEARS OLD

6'4' - 215 pounds

Kingston, Ontario

Jesse Wilson is a special player from a hockey hotspot in Kingston, Ontario. The young defender has been making players miss with his smooth skating for years. A young kid who is still fresh and very raw will need some coaching at the next level but he does show some signs of becoming a good player. Wilson grew up idolizing Tomas Kaberle when Tomas played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kaberle was a power play genius and although Wilson isn't as skilled in the opposing end, he can still produce a little bit. Wilson is hoping to someday make the victory hockey league and join some of the stars.

Pros:

Skating: Wilson is a great skater and has the ability to break out from his own end very smoothly. His greatest asset is being able to carry the puck out of his own end when the time comes for that. Jesse is often in teams skills challenge for his speed and can break away from opponents faster than most defensive players.

Discipline: Wilson doesn't often get himself in trouble with bad penalties and late game letdowns. He chooses to let his play do the talking and doesn't engage in wars of words. One of his biggest strength is his ability to be in the right place at the right time and avoid taking bad careless penalties. Wilson was only every penalized four times last season with his youth team in Kingston.

Defense: Wilson is a pretty good defender and prides himself on taking the right lane to the puck carrier in order to jar it loose. Jesse is a brilliant one on one defender and often times if he can't get to the puck carrier in time he has his stick out in the passing lane to stop them from creating a play.

Cons:

Shooting: Wilson isn't much of  threat to score from the backend because he lacks any pace on his shot.  big frame but a below average best from the point. In fact his youth team took him off the power play despite being the teams number one defensemen for most of the year last season. He is literally no threat to score and that is why he is often times seated on the bench.

Fighting: Whether you consider this a flaw or not, Wilson is a terrible fighter. He doesn't get into fights but the two times he got into fights as a youngster, he got demolished by his opponents. He will stick up for his teammates and that is all well and good, but he isn't very good at coming out on top of those tilts. If you are going to fight someone, Wilson is the one you want to mess with because he is a liability with his fists. Coaches were afraid he'd damage his hands if he every dropped his gloves and they were proven right once when he broke his finger in a fight.

Knowledge of hockey: Wilson wasn't always a hockey player and because of that he needs to be taught the game on the fly during games. He is very raw and scouts say that he needs to be moulded into a player that coaches feel he can be, because he himself doesn't know what he wants out of the sport yet.
