VHLM Newsletter - 15th Edition

Recommended Posts

Hi there and welcome to another edition of the VHLM Newsletter! There's a lot of people who will be getting tagged into a newsletter for the first time, so here's a quick breakdown of what we look to cover in each edition:

Uncapped TPE Opportunities - Any time there's a one-off or once-a-season point task available to enter, you'll find out about it in the early headlines of the article.

- League Recap - The middle of the Newsletter is generally based around keeping you up to speed with what's going on around the league, be that changes to how the league works, new features or how the current VHLM season is progressing.

- TPE Earning Guide - The bottom section of the Newsletter follows the same format each week. There, you will be provided with the links you need to get to the regular TPE earning activities.

We are quickly approaching the end of the regular season. The trade deadline is passed, which means new players created are not eligible in the S64 Draft and will get to spend one season and then some in the VHLM before getting draft in the S65 offseason. That will inevitably give them an edge in TPE, as they'll have more time than everyone that creates from now on to gather more TPE. The WJC ended recently, with Jubo's Canada winning their second straight gold after a great final against Asia and the unstoppable Alex Pepper. It was Jubo's third gold medal as a general manager, as he also won the S62 WC with Team Canada. I'd like to congratulate him again for that nice run as Canada's GM!

As always, I’d like to kick things off by telling you all about the VHL Discord. A lot of you are already in this and can probably attest to how helpful it’s been, but if you aren’t in it already you should definitely give it a shot, especially if you have any questions about the league as that will be the quickest place to get them answered! Like the last VHLM Newsletter, some of this newsletter will re-tread on old ground as, with this being a VHLM newsletter, there will inevitably be new members reading this for the first time that won’t be aware of what was in previous newsletters. So what I’ll do is put a bold *NEW* next to any information specifically made for this newsletter so players who have read these before know where to go to find the new info!

What's Going On In The VHLM

VHLM Season *NEW*

The VHLM season is in its last week and the playoff table is almost set already. The playoff format will be the same as last season: the only team that doesn't make the playoffs is the team finishing the regular season in last place. 4th-place and 5th-place teams will faceoff in a best-of-5 wild card round, with the winner moving on to play the regular season winners in the semi-finals. The other semi-finals wil see the 2nd and 3rd-place teams play each other. Obviously, the winners of these two semi-finals will face each other for a chance to lift the glorious Founder's Cup. The semi-finals and the finals are all best-of-7 series. Be sure to check how the playoffs unroll, as they tend to be interesting and full of lines controversy. Stay tuned!

The Yukon Rush currently hold the first place of the standings, 2 points ahead of the Wild. The Rush can count on Goaltender of the Year favourite Rhett Stoffiday, as he leads the league in GAA, SV%, wins and shutouts, giving his team a chance to win day in day out. On offense, the team is led by Ryan Zabby (28-48-76) and WJC All-Star Kisshan Shan (38-34-72), who is actually 6th in the league in goals scored. Kronos Bailey (21-18-39) is also having a good season, as he leads all players in hits with 285. Their blueline is in good hands too, as the #1 ranked prospect in the S64 Draft, Ryan Sullivan Jr., leads the way with an 8-52-60 statline. They also recently acquired defenseman Robert Renner, to solidify their already strong and deep roster for the playoffs.

The Saskatoon Wild is currently 2 mere points behind the Rush and are looking like they might just beat them at the finish line. The goalie situation is set since they traded for the #2 ranked prospect in the upcoming draft, Brick Wahl and the team has been on the rise ever since. The Wild's offense is one of the better ones in the league, as they can count on 4 players currently over 60 points, best goalscorer in the league Chace Trepanier (44-37-81), 4th best goalscorer in the league Rylan Peace (41-40-81), Anthony Dabarno (32-35-67) and former Ottawa Lynx Mark Gebauer (32-31-63), who was very recently acquired via trade. The situation is even better on defense, as the team has 3 60-point players, Piotr Jerwa (16-62-78), Burnt Toast (17-49-66) and Toby Fitzgerald (11-54-65), respectively ranking 2nd, 3rd and 4th in defenseman scoring. If I had to bid on who would eventually win the playoffs, my money would be on these guys.

In 3rd place, we find the Halifax 21st. Halifax was the best team in the last regular season and they are surprisingly doing alright this season as well. While they might be a step or two behind the Rush and the Wild, they could still surprise come playoff time. Their goaltending tandem from last season, Cole Mertz and Tyler Smith, returns and is still as efficient. The strength of this team is the triple threat of top scorer Nathan MacKinnon (36-61-97), top defenseman Jesse Wilson (18-66-84) and Nikita Flipachyev (39-39-78). Wlodzimierz Zajaczkowski (33-27-60) rounds it out as their 4th 60-point scorer.

The Las Vegas Aces are currently 4th in the standings, 1 point away from the 3rd place and the first round bye. The Aces are in the same position as the 21st, as they did well last season and maybe should be rebuilding right now, but they decided to push for it and are doing surprisingly well. The skater core isn’t too deep, but they got 2nd best goalscorer Jorgon Weyed (43-40-83) and Joel Ylonen (24-47-71) scoring when it matters. However, their star so far in this season is undeniably Kevin Weekes. The goaltender ranks 2nd in all of SV%, GAA and shutouts, right behind Yukon’s Stoffiday. If it wasn’t for Weekes, the 3rd place would already be Halifax’s, but Las Vegas are going to give them a run for their money.

The Ottawa Lynx presently hold the last playoff spot and all points to them holding that exact spot until the regular season ends, meaning they’ll have to faceoff with either the Aces or the 21st in the opening round, in what could be a way less impressive rematch of last season’s semi-final or Founder’s Cup final. The goaltending tandem of Finn Davison and JB Rift has been standing behind a core of inactive defensemen, making it hard for them to make their starts count. Aside from Elias Dahlberg (44-49-93), who’s ranked 2nd in points and 1st in goals at the moment, and Chance Matthews (22-59-81), the offense has been pretty spotty. Newcomer Pat Svoboda is pretty much the only other good performer for the rebuilding team, as he scored 23 points in 33 games since committing to the VHLM.

Finally, the Oslo Storm are currently the last-placed team in the VHLM and they probably be the only team in the league to miss the playoffs. Their goaltenders, Divaani Sohva and Marcel Vincent, split the starts and both are having trouble keeping the puck out of their net, which is normal when the rest of the team give them close to no help. The only standout performer on the team is Joey Boucher (33-36-69), as he already got triple the amount of points he scored last season. Oslo are ready for the next season, however, with their impressive haul of 9 picks in the first 3 rounds of the S64 VHLM Dispersal Draft.

Trivia Assistance *NEW*

1a. The best way to find the answer of this question would be to go in the VHL League Discussion section and search for the Continental Cups by Players thread.

2a. This one was a bit harder to find. In the VHL Games Discussion, below the Season subsections, you’ll find a couple of tagged posts regarding the history of the league. Lookout for the VHL Playoff History spreadsheet.

3a. In the VHL League Discussion section, check-out the VHL All-Time Captains list. You’ll see every captain for every team in the history of the league. If you don’t know what teams were expansion teams, search for teams that have no captains listed before the 30’s.

123b. Use the same list as question 3a, but look for players with a couple of yellow numbers beside their names.

Going to post some Trivia Assistance for the next trivia, because it is already up and I don't know if the next newsletter will be up before it closes.

1a. This question is basically the opposite of last week's question 2a. You could head over to the same spreadsheet and you'll find your answer there. You could also check the all-encompassing playoff thread, in VHL League Discussion as an alternative.

2a. Once again, search for the VHL Playoff History spreadsheet and compare every team's Finals appearances and Championship (check the last column in the last two tables).

3a. Head over to the Hall of Fame section of the portal and check the VHL Award winners. You'll have to check the full list of Daisuke Kanou Trophy winners to find the only 2 players that won it with 2 different teams.

123b. You'll find the answer to this question in the VHL Franchise History section, near the HOF section. From there, just follow the way to see Quebec's retired numbers. (Previous hint that leads to an outdated answer: There is a thread in the Quebec City Meute section of the forum listing every player that had their number retired by the organization.)

That thread seems to be incomplete compared to the one I found in the VHL Franchise History forum...
