VHLM Newsletter - 26th Edition

Recommended Posts

Hi there and welcome to another edition of the VHLM Newsletter! There's a lot of people who will be getting tagged into a newsletter for the first time, so here's a quik breakdown of what we look to cover in each edition:

Uncapped TPE Opportunities - Any time there's a one-off or once-a-season point task available to enter, you'll find out about it in the early headlines of the article.

- League Recap - The middle of the Newsletter is generally based around keeping you up to speed with what's going on around the league, be that changes to how the league works, new features or how the current VHLM season is progressing.

- TPE Earning Guide - The bottom section of the Newsletter follows the same format each week. There, you will be provided with the links you need to get to the regular TPE earning activities.

As always, I’d like to kick things off by telling you all about the VHL Discord. A lot of you are already in this and can probably attest to how helpful it’s been, but if you aren’t in it already you should definitely give it a shot, especially if you have any questions about the league as that will be the quickest place to get them answered! Like the last VHLM Newsletter, some of this newsletter will re-tread on old ground as, with this being a VHLM newsletter, there will inevitably be new members reading this for the first time that won’t be aware of what was in previous newsletters. So what I’ll do is put a bold *NEW* next to any information specifically made for this newsletter so players who have read these before know where to go to find the new info!

McWolf is back with the newsletters! Sonnet recently decided to step down from his position on the recruitment crew. He was the one taking care of this newsletter among other things so, with his departure, I will be the one writing them weekly, now. I used to update the VHL Draft rankings, but this job went straight back to Tagger. His mock drafts were usually better than mine, so it's for the better. Thanks for your help while you were on the team, @Sonnet. Even if it didn't last too long, I'm still glad I picked you to help me and not anyone else. And thanks @Tagger for stepping back in your old role. I honestly wouldn't go back to doing the job all by myself. Glad I can count on an experienced buddy by my side!

What's Going On In The VHLM

First Fifth of the VHLM Season *NEW*

Season started only a week ago but we are already past the 20% mark of season. Teams have all played 16 games and the standings already present a clear cut before the better teams that will probably be in the playoff picture, and teams that will have a hard way making it to the big dance. I take this opportunity to remind you that the playoff format hasn't changed, despite the two-team expansion; seeds 4 and 5 will faceoff in a best-of-3 wild card round. The winner of this series will go on to face the 1st seeded team in a best-of-7 semi-final, while seeds 2 and 3 will play each other in the other semi-final. The two winners will play in the Season 65 Founder's Cup Finals.

Halifax 21st (13-3-0)

On top of the leaderboards, we find what was the newest team in the league up to last season. They lost in the S64 Finals in 6 against Las Vegas, but a good chunk of their core came back this season, which gave them a head start over most teams. Fun fact, the 21st has a record of 3-3-0 against Las Vegas, meaning they are perfect against other teams.

Star of the team: Chase Klein @Chase Klein. He's the goalie with the most TPE and it shows. Halifax only allowed 40 goals in 16 games (2.5 average), 12 less than the next best.

Player to watch: Julius Freeman @rjfryman. He joined  the team as a waiver right after the draft, but he already amassed 146 TPE. He hasn't been too productive so far (3-14-17), but when he'll start scoring goals, he'll be a threat whenever he's on the ice.

Las Vegas Aces (11-5-0)

A mere 2 wins behind the 21st, we find the team that beat them in the last Founder's Cup finals, the defending champions, the Aces. Like the 21st, they have a lot of veteran VHLMer, which can explain their position and the fact they are defying the usually fast compete-rebuild cycle down in the minors.

Star of the team: Mitch Matthews @Antone10. At 26 points, Matthews is the 6th scorer in the league, at the moment. As a defenseman. He is also ranked 10th in hits and 11th in shots blocked.

Player to watch: Kyle Sabertooth @uphillmoss. The kid already has 11 goals, but he only has 97 TPE. Expect him to at least keep his pace once he develops.

Ottawa Lynx (9-7-0)

And the last team from last regular season's top 3 completes the top 3 this season as well. The Lynx are a strange case. Pegged by most as one of two teams that were obvious rebuilders after thd draft, they went out of their way and brought a ton of talent through waivers after their AGM recruited a lot of new and former members in the league.

Star of the team: Jack Lynch @xsjack. The returnee paces the league with 17 goals and 36 points. He got a couple of hat tricks, too, and is the main reason the Lynx got those 9 wins.

Player to watch: Aleksander Rodriguez @Jtv123. Claimed as a waiver, Rodriguez is on his way to become a solid player for the Lynx in their push for the playoffs, as this might be his only minor season.

Houston Bulls (8-7-1)

The first of 2 expansion teams, the Bulls moved assets around a lot in order to be competitive in their inaugural season. They can count on a good mix of offense and defense, first-generation members and veterans.

Star of the team: Kari Jurri @hockeyis66. His 17 goals are good enough to be tied in 1st place with Jack Lynch and Anton Edvin. He is also near the top of the league in differential, thanks to the possession-heavy line he forms with Viktor Kozlov and Maximilian Kirbsson (combined +43).

Player to watch: Owen May @FacebookFighter. He might be in the bottom half in the SV% and GAA leaderboards, but he already has 115 TPE, meaning his numbers should go up as the season continues.

Minnesota Storm (7-8-1)

A disappointing start by the team that was seen by most as the heavy favourites at the end of the last Dispersal Draft. Whatever it is that affects their play right now, I don't think it'll last. Expect them to win more than lose until the end.

Star of the team: Denver Wolfe @Goonie. His 31 points are good for 3rd in the league, and he achieves that as a 2-way defenseman. He also ranks 8th in shots blocked with 26.

Player to watch: Too many to name. They have 5 players at 200 TPE, already, but most of them aren't even scoring at a point per game pace. It'll change.

Yukon Rush (6-8-2)

The first team that would not make the playoffs if they started right now. But they don't, we are only at the fifth season mark. The Rush were last in the league last season. Their lack of assets means they didn't have much to sell and didn't as many high-end draft picks as Minnesota.

Star of the team: Hunter Hearst Helmsley @Beaviss. The 1st overall pick in the last Dispersal Draft and potentially the 1st overall pick in the next VHL Entry Draft. He doesn't disappoint, as he ranks top 5 in goals, assists and points.

Player to watch: Sami Van Der Dreissche @TsarPeter. A very active recent pickup, VDD hasn't done much on the ice yet, but he works hard and it'll pay off soon.

Saskatoon Wild (6-9-1)

There's not much that's wild about the Wild ight now. Theh sold two seasons worth of picks in S63 to secure a Founder's Cup and they still have fallback from then. They have some solid players, but it would probably be wise to start selling them soon

Star of the team: Shawnomir Jagr @TheLastOlympian07. The bright spot on this team. He's 4th in the league with 16 goals and among the top with 27 points.

Player to watch: Emil Passerelli @SparrowLTD. The waiver claim is nearing in on 100 TPE, which will give him a good boost as he looks like he might continue his point-per-game effort.

Philadelphia Reapers (4-10-2)

The last expansion team is also the last team in the league as we speak. They got their hands on some solid veteran members, thanks to the BladeMaiden-Bushito connection.

Star of the team: Wendy Candee Cain @SlashACM. Cain did a fine job holding the fort for a team that doesn't score much but that lets a ton of shots go through.

Player to watch: Edward Vigneault @Patpou22. The goalie turned defenceman already has big responsabilities as the team's 2nd best blueliner in TPE.

Trivia Assistance

Hint for question 1: A fairly easy question. Go in the HOF section and check the MVP Triphy winners.

Hint for question 2: This one was a bit harder to find, but it could be done in a pretty simple way. If a rookie was to have the most assists in the whole league, he would probably be named Rookie of the year, right? Check for a player that would have won this trophy and the one given to the players with the most assists during the same season.

Video Tutorial

This is a video tutorial of how to improve your player through point tasks that I made about two months ago. The idea was that we were going to have this edited to a better standard before the Season 64 Draft, but that hasn't come to pass yet, so I'll just release the raw footage for now. If you need timestamps for something in particular, here they are:
