Another Top 5 VHLM Big Men

With another week of VHLM play in the books, it is time to put the spotlight on five more monsters making an impact in the league. Some are freakish giants, and some simply take up a massive amount of space on the ice. In this second edition of VHLM Big Men, we will examine another 5 of the most prolific and impactful supersized beasts of the minors.

  1. Rocky LaGarza (Las Vegas Aces)

Starting off the list this week is a man built like a fire hydrant, standing at 6 feet even and weighing 225 lbs. LaGarza has climbed the point leaderboard since last week, working his way into the top 5 in the league in points. With 39 points already this season, LaGarza has proved himself a big scorer as well. LaGarza will definitely be a player to watch as he continues his career in the VHLM, and eventually the VHL.

  1. Mitch Matthews (Las Vegas Aces)

Next we have one of the best defensemen in the league, and the first blue liner to join the list of top VHLM big men, Mitch Matthews. At 6’3” and 200 lbs., Matthews is an impressive physical specimen that puts his size to good use in his physical game, racking up 58 hits and 43 shots blocked already this season. His physical play is not the only part of his game that stands out, as he has also amassed 8 goals and 24 assists as a defenseman.

  1. Julius Freeman (Halifax 21st)

One of the youngest members of the VHLM big men, Freeman is already huge for his young age of 17, at 6’3” and 210 lbs. His size is not the only impressive thing for his age, however, as he has also potted 8 goals and earned 23 apples so far in the season for Halifax, making him one of the team’s leading scorers. Freeman is sure to be a highly sought-after prospect in the S66 draft, especially if he keeps up this pace of excellent playmaking.

  1. Basaraba Moose (Halifax 21st)

Moose is yet another massive defenseman breaking into the list this week, standing at 6’3” and weighing 203 lbs. Moose had a successful run in the previous season, but has absolutely broken out in S65, with 29 points already, joining Matthews as one of the highest scoring defensemen in the league. However, Moose’s most impressive stat is his jaw-dropping 86 hits this season. His shot blocks are also nothing to scoff out, as he’s saved his goalie from 40 shots already this season, with many more likely on the way. Moose truly lives up to his name, and is not afraid to show it with his playstyle.

  1. Matthew Kai (Minnesota Storm)

Kai rounds off our list, standing at an impressive 6’4” and weighing 212 lbs. Kai is a true asset to his teammates, gathering 20 assists and throwing 66 hits at this point in the season. The 22-year-old right winger also has one of the best plus minus stats in the league with +18. It is no surprise that Kai was selected high at 8th overall by the VHL, and we will continue to watch this big man continue to tear up the minors, and eventually the VHL.

Thus concludes another Top 5 VHLM Big Men list. As the season continues, we will continue to spotlight outstanding hockey giants and follow their impressive accomplishments. From the tall and lanky to the short and chonky, we salute all of the big boys making the league the greatest sport to watch.

Word Count 597. Week ending 03/17/2019.
