Match Fixing Scandal: Is TPE a performance enhancing drug? [1/2]

There has been a wealth of information that has been made public since the beginning of the investigation into alleged match fixing by VHL player Charlie Paddywagon. The investigation, originally started by the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) then expanded to include the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has also grown from focusing on Charlie Paddywagon to include the VHL and the VHL Fantasy Zone. Recent revelations include the VHL publicly declaring that the VHL is a simulation where players have no agency during the actual game to affect the outcome. One issue that has received little discussion is what the VHL Fantasy Zone is offering as rewards for players. There must be a very enticing reward that makes players want to bet on the outcome of games they are playing in and other games in the VHL and VHLM. Based on our reporting we have learned that the VHL Fantasy Zone pays winning players with something called TPE.

Details on what TPE actually is are scarce. Until now, none of this information has been made public. We spoke to top sports doctor Dr. Jakub Satan, ex-VHL head physician and brother of retired professional hockey player Miroslav Satan.  Dr. Satan has spent significant time working with TPE. Due to strict non-disclosure agreements, Dr. Satan is unable to discuss the contents of TPE but was able to provide this summary “TPE are drugs in pill form that all VHL players are required to take. After ingesting a pill, the player experiences a permanent increase in performance.”

One of Dr. Satan’s duties as head physician of the VHL was to administer the VHL’s TPE distribution program. His primary duty was to allocate and distribute TPE pills to all VHL and VHLM players. Players are awarded pills by the VHL based on various contribution metrics. Both on-ice and off-ice performance contributes to the TPE earned by players. The VHL Fantasy Zone was one of the way players could receive additional TPE. Dr. Satan added “The VHL promotes earning TPE to all the players. If any player wants to succeed in the VHL, they have to consume TPE to improve themselves.”

Dr. Satan decided to speak publicly about TPE because of concerns he has for the well-being of VHL players. “There have been no studies on TPE or its long term effects on the human body. We have no idea the ramifications of ingesting so much TPE in such a short time does to the players.” Dr. Joseph Christian, a doctor who has received compensation from the VHL for being an expert witness and writing amicus briefs supporting the VHL, down played the need for extensive studies “The VHL has been operating this way for 66 seasons, don’t you think that has been more than enough time to provide real life evaluation of TPE? I’ll answer that for you… it has been enough time. We know that TPE does not negatively affect players. In fact the opposite is true, TPE is an amazing accomplishment that has the potential to advance all of humanity.”

Another safety concern raised by Dr. Satan and others is the length of the career for VHL players. “The VHL may be the only professional league to force its players into retirement. And they do so after only 8 seasons. Why is that? Is it because the VHL knows the body can not withstand long-term TPE usage?” The VHL has previously stated the reason for the forced retirement is to promote the health of their players and to keep fans excited and engaged. Dr. Satan shares additional information about the effect of TPE, “We’ve seen players begin physical deterioration after only 5 seasons of taking TPE. Of course, the VHL covers that up by simply giving players more TPE to overcome that regression.” The VHL has not responded to our requests for comment on this issue.

Without knowing the contents of TPE, it is difficult to know the legality of what the VHL is doing. Based on what little information that is available, TPE appears to have all the hallmarks of a performance enhancing drug. If the VHL is forcing players to take illegal drugs to enhance their performance, it could spell the end for the entire league. There is no doubt this information will come under close scrutiny of investigators and the court of public opinion.

Review - I have to say, the TPE as a performance enhancing drug was one of the funniest storylines from last season. It's creative to the point where you have doctor testimonials, the name selection was apt, and the way you describe TPE improving players is on-point. Great work.
