Quote

“Fontenette is the prototypical modern European defenseman. Moves the puck well, takes advantage of the slightest weakness shown by the opposition defense. Has shown himself to be reliable protecting the own zone, and is already one of the best defensemen in the VHLM. A high draft pick in the S66 VHLM draft, he’s shown to be worth the trust placed in him. There’s only one gear with him, that’s full speed forward.”

-Bart Randy (Former Ottawa Lynx coaching staff)

Strengths

Transition

Moving through the neutral zone with or without the puck, Fontenette finds space and smart passes through the boards or through the middle. 15 assists in his rookie season and now a big part of the Mexico City powerplay gives you a solid read on his future as a playmaker.

Puck retention

With smart manoeuvring and smooth hands, Fontenette is tough to shake up when in possession of the puck. Capable of beating his man near the blue line, he can sometimes walk right in to the slot and make magic happen. It’s imperative that Fontenette keeps applying himself and developing his stickhandling to account for what he might lack in physicality.

Traditional zone defense

His special stickhandling skills transfer to the defensive end as much as on the offensive. Disrupting passing lanes, board play and stripping attackers off the puck, Fontenette has got it all going on the defensive end. One of the major positive points of the S65 Ottawa Lynx 5-on-5 game, and a willing shot blocker throughout his time in the VHLM.

Weaknesses

Size

At 5’11, Fontenette lacks size and length, even with meaty legs and explosive speed. On the VHLM level his smaller frame has not yet been found out and abused, but the activity on defense and never-give-up attitude must keep up if he wants to succeed in the pros.

Shot quality

From time to time, Fontenette has shown skill in delivering the puck to the net. It’s not expected from him all the time, but with the Season 66 Mexico City struggling for shots and offense outside of Rodriguez, Fontenette could use some flair and confidence in creating better shots for himself, or pinching in to get shots on the one-timer.

Physicality on defense

Fontenette has not shown grit and grind to work the puck out of the corners, either on the puck or defending an opposing player. His man-to-man defense only extends to using his stick and smarts, but not roughing up centers in front of the goal or sending out bruising hits in nearly any case. While it can be argued that this is better from a disciplinary standpoint, Fontenette seems to have grown used to being the smaller man, and does not “play bigger”.

Review:

This is the guy keeping me out of the top 5 in scoring on my team, so I might be a little biased.

Great use of picture and stats, as well as summary. The scouting quote is always a nice touch. I do like to see a conclusion at the end of a profile though, maybe give that a look.

No criticisms about S/W, formatting and grammar are good. Almost the picture of a perfect report. Well done.
