The Life and Times of Shush Nyko

Childhood Tragedy

Shush Nyko was born Aksel Bergsteinn, on May 14th, 2003.  He was born in Reykjavik, Iceland to a fishing family. His father was a very well-known Ice Fisherman, while his mother was a politician. This impressed a hard work ethic on him from a very young age. When he was quite young his father was out on the ice catching fish and little Aksel was playing around on the ice. This is when tragedy or fortune struck. Little Aksel fell into the ice and almost drowned. His father being a proud ice man decided that his son will never be at a disadvantage on the ice. From there on out Aksel was in hockey skates and playing ice sports. Despite his father thinking this event would scar him from ever playing, the exact opposite thing happened. Young Aksel was a natural on the ice, growing up with ice in his veins and due to almost freezing in ice, something clicked inside of him. This was both a tragedy and a blessing, it gave him the courage to play and the fearlessness to never lose. He fought and scraped for every inch inside that ice and he was going to do the same on the ice.

NEVER TELL ME NO

Ice Hockey in Iceland was an up and coming sport when young Aksel was first getting into the sport. There was an older idiot name Nyko who told Aksel he would never amount to anything. Well young Aksel took this to heart and worked even harder. He wouldn’t let that idiot Nyko be right, so he immediately changed his name to Shush Nyko. This showed his drive and determination and his overall disdain for the one called Nykonax. He dedicated every waking moment to proving the dumb dumb Nyko wrong.

Shush Nyko was born out of spite and fire but was cooled and tempered into a cold steel of hatred, much like the blade of a sharp skate. This is what drives him and makes him tick. Shush, was no longer going to be Aksel to the outside world. He was reborn into the kid who was and the man who will become Shush Nyko. Every time he hears that name or sees it written in the paper or on the news, then he will remember the doubters.

Shush Nyko Now

Going into his first years as a teen playing the sport, he was determined to be the best. Shush, dedicated every waking moment to playing the game of hockey. He would stay up late stick handling, shooting against walls, practicing his eye hand coordination, and generally watching the game. He studied the great and learned from them. Every time his dad went out ice fishing young Shush would go out and skate and stick handle. Eventually he found himself in more competitive organized leagues. This is where he really started to hone his skills. He would sit on the ice for long hours sniping corner or skating laps, well into the darkness. Young Aksel was dead, he was now Shush Nyko and nobody could take this fire away from him.

International Competition

Shush’s first big break came from a U14 International tournament where he could play against the best. Playing against kids in Scandinavia and Europe was great before, but this time he would get to see his skill against Americans and Canadians. Shush was ready to tell Nyko just how wrong he was. Little did he know that guy was going to be present. During the last round robin game, he saw the dumb face of Nykonax in the crowd and it enraged him. He went on to score a hat trick and at the end of the game he laughed in Nykonax’s red face. He knew he had won, when the announcer was up there announcing Shush Nyko as the 1st star of the game.

The rest of the tournament went well, and he impressed a lot of the international scouts. This is where he got the courage and pressure to make the jump to the big stage and join the VHLM draft this year and see how he stacks up to the rest of the competition.

Looking Forward Never Back

Shush Nyko is hoping to look forward to a really successful career in both the Victory Hockey League Minors and the Victory Hockey League. He is entering the draft soon and is hoping that a team who really wants him picks him as he will be a great contributor right away. Shush has made hockey his life and is hoping to be rewarded by doing that. He knows he still has a bit to learn. Shush is hoping that he can go to a team that is willing to let him rip shots at the net but that is also ok with him making mistakes. Though, he has shown at a young age to be a very defensively reliable winger.

Beyond Victory Hockey League, Shush hopes to be able to continue to compete for his country and his area of birth. This is quite important to him, since this is the area that raised him and that allowed him to flush. Of course, Shush is also hoping to do all of this in spite of the Nykonax, who has doubted him at every turn and corner. One day he will be inducted in the Hall of Fame as Shush Nyko and the world will forever tell the tale of the man Nyko who was once so stupid as to doubt how amazing Aksel really was.

Beyond hockey, Shush hopes to have a family and settle down in Iceland, much like his parents did. He wants to stay connected to his family and his area. He would like to stay in Europe long term as this is his home, but he understands that the sport will make him go where he goes, but that is ok. He will play hard for anyone who shows a desire to have him.

Review:  Great read!  Love the trolling of your friend and as it turns out, VHLM GM, nykonax.  It's not just amusing, but provides a hook to hang the whole bio on.  Also love the name, Shush Nyko.  Fabulous that you could insert a photo of an Iceland National Team member with a cage helmet so we get the authenticity of the Iceland jersey without the distraction of "is that really Shush's face".  lol  Looking forward to playing on the Kings with you!
