So I need to write a media spot for the week so why not take a look at the regular season series between the two teams heading into the finals. These teams being the Malmo Nighthawks and the Seattle Bears.

The first game of the series Malmo took the win with a score of 3-1. The three stars of the game were Ryan Sullivan Jr, Trevor Van Lagen, and Michael Johnson. Something interesting about this game was that both teams were perfect on the PK. This game was won strictly based on 5 on 5 play. Special teams were not a factor, something to notice was that many of the Malmo players walked away with a - in the +/- category despite a win. This could indicate that Malmo is very top heavy and have to rely on one specific line.

The second game of the series was won by the Seattle Bears in a shootout 5-4. The three stars of this game were Matt Thompson, Ryan Sullivan Jr, John Frostbeard. So despite the Bears taking the win two out of the three stars were Malmo players. Unlike the first match up between these two teams, special teams did play a part in this game. Seattle went 33.33% on the PP while Malmo went 37.5%. The shots were the same for both teams but Seattle was able to sneak away the win in the shoot out.

Third game of the series was a win for Malmo taking it 3-2. The three stars for this game were Matt Thompson, Ryan Sullivan Jr, Juan Jaundice. While both teams were able to score on the PP Seattle went 11.11% and Malmo went 33.33%. Despite a shot differential of 43 to 17 Malmo won this game 3-2 in regulation. Malmo put in their back up goalie and he stood on his head.

Fourth game of the series was a win for the Seattle Bears 5-4 in a shootout. The three stars for this game were Matt Thompson, Trevor Van Lagen, and Berocka Sundqvist. Similar to game two of the series, even though the Bears ended up winning the game, two of the three stars are from Malmo. This game seems to be a combination of game 1 and game 2 of the series, in which special teams didn’t play a big part of this game.

Fifth game was a win for Malmo taking it 5-4. The last game of the series and one of the final games of the season. This I believe is going to be similar to how these two teams are going to play in the finals. The three stars (all from malmo) Jack Lynch, Hugh Chan, Condor Adrienne. It’s nice to see Thompson not first star for once in this series. Malmo went 50% on the PP and Seattle went 22.22%. Something to note is the shot differential being 51 to 27. This game was won with Malmo’s defense even though it was a semi-high scoring game.

So if we look at the entire series between the two teams Malmo has the edge 3-2. Malmo seems to best the Bears in regulation but the Bears seem to be able to sneak out a win if it goes to OT or a shootout. On Paper it seems that Malmo has the Bears number. We all know how better teams on paper go and with STHS being the simulation engine here, no one can predict how things are going to go.
