Trade Analysis

This is a very interesting trade for both sides. Seattle has been having cap issues since their second straight conquest of the Continental Cup in S69, due to having too many players coming off rookie deals at once, Acyd Burn being one of them. This S66-S67-heavy core led them two straight championships, but now the team has no choice but to split them if they want any chance to be somewhat competitive in the next couple of seasons. In return, they acquire a great depth asset in Markus Nygren and a 1st-round selection in next offseason’s Entry Draft.

The value of the 1st-round pick is hard to assess, as Malmo realistically should have been one of the better teams in the European Conference this season, but ended up missing the playoffs - and their pick won the lottery, though they don’t have it anymore. The pick could pretty be anywhere from a 1st overall to a 12th overall selection. Hopefully, Burn gives Malmo the push they needed, as he might be able to fill the big hole left by the retirement of Matt Thompson, that the team previously tried to fill with Jake Davis and Dan Wilinsky without success. Maybe Burn was the missing piece in this offence, one that will push everyone to their limits and get the team back in the spring dance. The big drawback for Malmo in this trade, however, is that Burn only has a season left on his contract. If things don’t go as planned, he might decide to test the free agency market in S72, giving Malmo underwhelmingly low value for their 1st-round selection next season.

Acyd Burn

Acyd Burn is one of these players that have all the tools to succeed and score at the highest level, yet could never achieve it because of the situation they found themselves in. The S67 Entry Draft 7th overall pick possesses one of the best shots - if not the best - in the league, but he has struggled to put the puck in the back of the net, having scored north of 30 goals only once in the first four seasons of his career. In Malmo, he joins a less crowded roster, one in which he should be the clear #1 forward, which should give him the opportunity to easily exceed his career highs of 36 goals and 80 points. Though we did predict the same kind of results for Jake Davis and Dan Wilinsky, Malmo’s offseason acquisitions in S69 and S70, and they both scored only 54 points in their only season with the team. We shall see if Burn can break this sort of curse that seems to be affecting the Swedish franchise.

Markus Nygren

Markus Nygren joins the Bears as a less explosive offensive asset than Acyd Burn. The sophomore winger is coming off a 10-point rookie campaign, as he played in a very limited role for the struggling Nighthawks. He might get more opportunities to display his offensive skills in Seattle, as their expensive core makes it so that they can’t have much depth on their roster, which pushes Nygren almost certainly in a top 6 role on his new team. The pass-first forward should get along just fine the likes of Scott Greene and Guy LeGrande, who both tend to shoot a lot if he gets to play with them.

Yeah that contract extension definitely makes or breaks it. Either way though I think this propels Malmo to be our main threat in the conference. Granted, I thought that last offseason as well.

Well, we will see... I do believe Menace will be our Rivals for the near future for sure. But meh, Malmo>Moscow.
