Trade Analysis

I was under the impression that with Dan Baillie’s extension yet to be signed, the defending Continental Cup champions, the Moscow Menace, would be stuck in a tight salary cap situation. Yet, they seem to have found enough room to trade for Henrik Zoiderberg. Maybe there are other moves coming for the Menace, or maybe Baillie has no intention to come back with the team, but either way, Zoiderberg should fit right in with the offensive juggernaut. In return for the skilled forward, the Seattle Bears got their hands on defenseman Will Clarke, and a pair of consecutive S71 draft picks - the last pick of the 1st round and the first pick of the 2nd round. The trade gives some breathing room to Seattle, as their salary cap situation was as bad as ever and they absolutely needed to shed some talent this offseason, in order to stay below the daunting $45,000,000 limit. They do get in return a solid depth option on the blueline in Will Clarke, and two selections in the next draft, with which they should be able to get players that will stay in the minors one more season, only to come up and help the team when they have made more room on the team in the future.

Henrik Zoiderberg

Henrik Zoiderberg has grown a lot since slipping to the 2nd round of the S67 VHL Entry Draft. Teams didn’t trust him to develop at this insane rate, but he did and now has the tools to be one the league’s greats. However, possessing the toolkit necessary for it isn’t always enough. In fact, while Zoiderberg is one the most talented players in the league, his stat lines over the course of his first four major league seasons are nothing short of lacklustre. His career highs of 28 goals and 58 points - both set last season - don’t tell the story of a superstar, though he might have been a victim of Seattle’s great depth this last couple of seasons, whereas he should slot right in a top 6 role with one of the most dangerous offences in the league in Moscow.

Will Clarke

Will Clarke is a capable all-around defenseman that possesses great defensive awareness and is rarely caught out of position. He also has a very dangerous slapshot, evidenced by the 8 goals he scored while limited to a depth role in Moscow’s busy roster. However, the sophomore blueliner’s development seems to already have come to a halt, which is not necessarily a bad thing for Seattle. Every team needs players who accept to settle for depth roles, which is basically what Clarke is at this point; the 4th defenseman with a reasonable cap hit and a great set of skills.
