Board of Governors Updates

Advantage

Recommended Posts

It’s been quite a while since the Board of Governors has issued an official update on what we’re doing. Please note that these updates are for the purpose of the general VHL member to know what we are and aren't working on. Some topics that move on and off this list may not come to fruition–we may decide that, after careful examination, the idea isn't practical or has too many inevitable opportunities for failure. These updates are not intended to signal that we have everything about it figured out.

Frequency of these updates is to be determined. There's no point in posting weekly updates stating that concepts are still in progress, but the goal is to reduce the amount of unknowns with relation to what people are and aren't paying attention to. Anyway, without further ado...

The Meta

We have been in the process of discussing how to resolve the meta issue in the league since late October. Our goals for the project include creating a more well-rounded competition among teams, rather than a select few teams dominating the entire league because of specific player builds.

A challenge we’ve faced in our search for a good solution has been a resistance to infringing upon user freedoms in building their player. We’re narrowing potential solutions so that users still have control over how they build without allowing for the current issue to persist. We’ve advanced from the initial discussion phase and are currently looking at test sims that have been run by fellow board members.

VHLM Waiver Improvement

We are currently working through a proposal to update how the VHLM Waiver System works. Right now, VHLM GMs are required to manually post in player creation threads, which takes time, effort, and availability. The proposal for improvement consists of moving the VHLM waiver to the portal. This concept was proposed in response to a deep dive into retention.

We reached a point where BOG members had said their piece, and we are collecting information and opinions from VHLM GMs, as they would be the primary population affected by the changes.

VHL Finance Transparency

All amounts listed are in CAD. The makeup of each expense category in this quarter is as follows:

  • Advertising, costs related to recruitment drives.
  • Branding, costs related to purchasing team logos.
  • Charity, the total of funds donated to the league earmarked for charity and the league contribution from the holiday drive. (Does not include holiday raffle winners)
  • Hosting, costs related to hosting the portal and forums.
  • Licensing, costs related to STHS licenses.

Career Point Task Revisit

There have been complaints (both old and new) about the career point tasks. This proposal just came forward a couple days ago, so not much has been done on this front.

We’re evaluating the career point tasks as they currently stand to determine whether they should be updated/returned to how they previously were. More to come on this front.

Additional Secondary Task

We received a proposal about adding a new secondary point task since trivia wasn’t running. Right now, secondary point task options include reviewing, VHL.com tasks (article, radio, and graphic), and press conferences. Although there are ways to reach cap each week the the current options, without trivia, these options may require people to complete tasks in formats that they’re not comfortable with. The goal outlined in the proposal is to offer more opportunities for forum engagement and connecting with people outside of your own team’s locker room/immediate vicinity. We are currently in the process of determining whether we should implement the proposed task, especially given the return of trivia.

Award Voting

Award voting is currently live! Woohoo! Offseason!

I have no idea if I can comment on this and somebody else may have a better idea but what about weekly forum games for tpe(2) kinda like what the PBE does, and people could also suggest games to do

games would be like

make a story(where people each get to post under the main topic on the forums a sentience to make a story)
last latter Word game, where the host (selected by you guys most likely) would make a phase like

The Rush will win the cup

then who goes next would have to make a phase using the last latter of each word so they in this case would use E,H,L,N,E,E

Every Hockey legend needs Elite Everything

and people could also make game suggestions this add another sub TPE task that fun and evolves the most contamination between players  then almost any other tasks right now

Good stuff, with the waiver system. Would the change only be a move to the portal. Or also a look at how waiver claims are prioritized? Similar to the NHL system of worst goes first to help parity?

It's an overall look at potential process improvements to the waiver system, I don't think we're locked into any direction yet. I believe we're consulting with M GM's for their feedback and thoughts as well, as the waiver system should be a tool to assist them in their job duties, rather than a source of stress as it seems to be now.

Making a single copy pasted post takes time, effort, and availability? Very foreign concept but if moving it to the portal would help with that then sure

What you also need to consider is that new members tend to sign with the first offer they get regardless of whether it’s a good fit so the M GM’s often feel a ridiculous pressure to be constantly available to make this posts.

Just to add to this, I spent a decent amount of time in management in the M. The constant grind of doing waiver claims was by far the most tedious part of the experience. The goal here would be to relieve some of that for the GMs and AGMs. We don't wanna ruin the first experience a new user gets when they first visit the site. There's no denying it's a cool feeling to get all those offers when you first create. But if we can find a way to automate this process and still make it feel like a cool experience that would end in the same result (I.e. getting them set up with their initial team, signing a contract and getting them in Discord) then that would be ideal.

Just an idea I had for a secondary PT along the lines of trivia but what about a quiz/scavenger hunt that had questions about the past week's games that folks would have to go into the index and find the answers to? (Example: Who scored the GWG in the Prague-Warsaw game?) There could be 4-6 questions in a Google Form and make it worth 2 TPE. It would get more views for the game files too. And maybe a draw for 1 TPE each week if you player is mentioned in the quiz.

For full transparency, the meta conversation has taken the majority of our time and efforts. Our goal is to have a solution ready for implementation next season, and the upcoming offseason is very quickly approaching. Rather than trying to spread thin our efforts across multiple topics, we’ve agreed that the meta should be our top priority.

The Meta (update)

Since the last update, we’ve had the opportunity to run and evaluate some test sims as well as finalize the method with which we plan to address the issues caused by the sim engine’s meta. At this point, we’ve run through the major potential problems and are trying to patch them before it hits the general public. We're breaking and repairing our solution so that we can try to minimize the amount of things that can be broken after implementation. Our spreadsheet nerds are in heaven right now. You can expect another update on this front soon.

VHLM Waiver Improvement (update)

We’ve reached out to the VHLM GMs and collected some information from them. We ran into a bit of an issue when we got really mixed feedback from them (i.e., some of them loved it, others hated it). The board is also somewhat divided on how to proceed, and with so much effort being dedicated to the meta solution, this front has slowed quite a bit. We'll return to it once we have more time to determine whether the league will ultimately benefit from the change.

Career Point Task Revisit (update)

We’ve continued discussion on this front. We’ve recently received some input about introducing tasks that are specific to the VHLE, so we’re also trying to figure out how we can incorporate the new league into our adjustments.

VHL Mentorship Program (revisiting)

The Board received a proposal a few months ago about implementing a mentorship program. We’ve been rolling around the idea and evaluating various ways of implementing it, leaning toward something like AGMs, which are GM-run and optional. This topic ties closely to our efforts to find ways to retain users after they’ve made their way to the site.

New Create TPE Spending (new)

A common issue we’ve seen, especially with the pervasive influence of the meta builds, is the concern among members that new folks will apply their TPE in ways that aren’t super beneficial to their player. This could be dumping equal amounts of TPE into every single attribute, not understanding the primary / secondary / tertiary ordering of attributes, etc. We are trying to figure out a way to help new creates start their careers on the right foot and enable them to succeed long term.

Our HOF discussion is open! We’re doin the thing! Yay!

Closed topics:

Additional Secondary Task: game recaps were rolled out! Woo hoo!
