It's been a long journey, but we're finally here! Today, the final five players of our VSN Top 25 will be revealed! The Top Five features four players who ranked here last season, along with a newcomer that unsurprisingly smashed into the Top Five. But you're not reading this article for my introductions, you want to see who's made the grade. We'll start it off with a player who you could say has established a real pedigree of making this list...

 

5. C - Hunter Hearst Helmsley

Season 72: 1

 

The current face of the Warsaw Predators, one of the VHL’s newest franchises, Hunter Hearst Helmsley has been a prodigy since his first overall selection in the S65 VHLM Dispersal Draft. He succeeded mightily at the junior level, earning himself another first overall selection in the VHL Entry Draft. His VHL career started with a steady rise in points for his first three seasons, prior to breaking out into the superstar we all know him as today. Now it’s been four straight 80+ point seasons, and he looks to be on pace for a fifth. Triple H is a premiere two-way forward who always finds himself among the league’s top scorers. He has earned both the Mike Szatkowski and Scott Boulet Trophies, both won in the S71 season. The American centre is definitely providing a great on-ice product for the new fans in Warsaw and making a mark in his final season.

4. D - Condor Adrienne

Season 72: 10

 

Is anyone really surprised to see Condor Adrienne here? This mainstay of the Malmo Nighthawks has always enjoyed a reputation as one of the VHL's top defensemen, including a Jake Wylde Trophy win in Season 70 as the VHL's top blue liner. But Adrienne went a step beyond in Season 72, becoming the first player since Season 68 to break 100 points, finishing with exactly 100. Condor recorded a mind-boggling 35 goals, with 23 being scored on the power play. With 65 assists, Adrienne's 100 points led the VHL, earning him the Mike Szatkowski Trophy. His 188 blocked shots and 254 hits also indicated he was still a quality force in his own zone, and as a result, he cleaned up at the Season 72 VHL Awards. Along with the aforementioned Mike Szatkowski Trophy, he was a slam dunk winner of the Alexander Valiq Trophy as the league's top offensive defenseman, the Sterling Labatte Trophy as the top defenseman, and the Brett Slobodzian Trophy as the VHL's most outstanding player. It will be a big challenge to follow up the monster year he had, but at this stage of his career, the talent of Condor Adrienne is undeniable, and he receives a very much deserved ranking in the Top Five.

3. C - Scott Greene

Season 72: 5

 

Coming in and rounding off the top 3, we have Scott Greene of the Seattle Bears. Off the back of his best season yet, who knows what Greene has in store for the rest of the league. He had 93 points, with 32 goals and 61 assists in 72 games last season and was 3rd in the league scoring race. We fully expect Scott to come back this year with another excellent season, and on a Bears team that didn’t suffer much this offseason, he could be looking at a 100 point season. The American forward should be the #1 choice at the centre, and with his scoring ability, it’s exactly where you want him. His discipline is something to take note of here, he only had 28 PIM last year, a great improvement on the season before, and as he ages he seems to be getting smarter on the ice as he realizes his importance to the team’s overall success. As a coach you always want your best players to be on the ice as often as possible, and the Bears will be ecstatic with the way Greene improved on that last year. Defensively, Greene is still a solid player in his own zone, not quite at the elite level but he certainly still is an asset to the penalty kill. If the Bears have another successful season we can expect Scott Greene to be at the forefront of the offence.

1B. C - Jet Jaguar

Season 72: 2

 

Jet Jaguar is one of the few VHLers to never drop below a point per game in all the seasons they have played in. S73 takes Jaguar into his 8th and final season and if he can put up another 72+ point season you would surely see his name amongst the past greats in the hall of fame. Last season saw Jaguar break a lot of his PBs in one season featuring, tied most points, most assists, most shots, most PIMs and most hits. It appears that Jaguar is like a fine wine that is only getting better as he matures. All the Davos fans will be hoping that he can improve on last season and make his final season an outrageously stellar performance. Knowing Jaguar, he will be hungry to take home some silverware in his final season as during his 7 seasons, he has won the cup once in S70 with Moscow and taken home the Szatkowski Trophy in the same season. Though the question on everyone's lips will be can Jaguar finally crack the challenging task of a 100 point season? Jaguar deserves the top spot but will he be happy with sharing the spotlight.

1A. LW - Julius Freeman

Season 72: 4

 

Julius Freeman has been the model of consistency throughout his career, breaking a point per game pace in only his second season, and then repeatedly breaking it every season since, except for one where he fell just short. This season saw him put up the second-best point total of his career with 87, including his highest goal total with 45. He also made his first change of team in his career, having been traded from his long term landing spot in Vancouver to a New York team eager to end a playoff drought - a goal they accomplished in a big way after adding both Freeman and Acyd Burn. A solid points total, a new team, everything looked good for Freeman this season, but the biggest change is a massive uptick in hits. He spent a lot of time before the season working on that particular aspect of his game, and it showed with 278 hits, more than the prior three seasons combined. Freeman is a fantastic all-around player and deserves every bit of his spot at the top of the list.

And with that, the Season 73 VSN Top 25 has come to a close. The big surprise this year, of course, being a two-way tie for #1, despite there being eight different members creating the rankings. But in the end, you couldn't go wrong with having either Jet Jaguar or Julius Freeman atop the list, and as a result, they both share the distinction. Both will be out to prove which one is the better player this season, but with both Freeman and Jaguar playing the final season of their careers, it means that when we meet here again for the Season 74 VSN Top 25, we will be crowning a new top player!
