Season 72 VHL Draft Analysis

The Season 72 VHL draft intrigues me more than any other draft for a few reasons. The first is that I was of course drafted this season. However, there are also some interesting picks from this draft year. I’ll be doing an analysis of every pick from the draft. It’s not a redraft, but rather a quality rating of each pick based on TPE from rjfryman’s most recent class ranking. Due to this the TPE totals aren’t completely up to date. I’ve created a couple of tiers to determine pick quality, as shown below. They are completely subjective. I will be using my own player as an example for each tier.

STEAL - Determined by a TPE ranking to draft position differential of +3 or greater.

Example: Timothy Brown was drafted 12th. If his TPE ranking was 9 or greater, he would be considered a steal.

GOOD - Determined by a TPE ranking to draft position differential between +2 and -1.

Example: Timothy Brown was drafted 12th. If his TPE ranking was 10-13, he would be considered a good pick.

REACH - Determined by a TPE ranking to draft position differential between -2 and -9.

Example: Timothy Brown was drafted 12th. If his TPE ranking was 14-21, he would be considered a reach.

BUST - Determined by a TPE ranking to draft position differential of -10 or greater. Players who have retired or gone inactive are automatically a bust regardless of TPE ranking.

Example: Timothy Brown was drafted 12th. If his TPE ranking was 22 or lower, he would be considered a bust.

Best Draft: Helsinki Titans. All 4 draft picks were steals. Completely cleaned up in this draft.

Worst Draft: D.C. Dragons. Flaten is better TPE wise than Riley Knight Gee on Prague, but in terms of quality of picks D.C. was the worst in the draft.

Review: 9/10 - Holy freakin ferk that's an article! I love that you included your methodology in such a detailed and colourful way. That's an easily-repeatable formula that could be applied to any draft class at any time. I wish I had a bit of context for each player, a "how they're doing", or try to explain why a player busted or was a steal. Overall, awesome writing and thanks for doing so much work!

I was planning on making a brief explanation for each pick, but by the time I made my formula and entered all the data I just wanted to be done lol

It will be easier next time and I'll give a bit of a summary for each pick. ?

flaten 390 gee 354 andreshnikov 178 king 117

so prague's 2 draftees add up to 471

and dc's add up to 568

prague's selections were 32 and 46

dc's selections were 16 and 39

considering flaten hasn't been around since the 2nd and hasn't updated in the last 2 weeks: IF he's gone for good, it's only a matter of time until prague will have officially done more with less - although a lot of that also banks on king, who batch updates, continuing to batch update.
