Good evening everyone, and welcome to the Season 74 Victory Hockey League Awards Show, presented by VSN! I'm Doomsday, returning again as your host tonight! In our second season with sixteen VHL franchises, we saw individual scoring numbers explode even further, and we witnessed some playoff races that came down to the final day of the season. On top of that, one of the largest surges of talent the league has ever seen joined the ranks of the VHLM, resulting in a staggering twelve round draft. The VHL is enjoying a tremendous wealth of talent, and there is already talks that perhaps even more teams will be required in the future…

Hey, I see you out there, @Beaviss. Settle down. Not yet!

It was a wild year, and now it's time to honor all of those players, coaches, and everyone else who went above and beyond this season and transcended greatness! The Continental Cup has been hoisted, the VHL Draft has come and gone… it's time to recognize the best of the best of the VHL in Season 74!

Who is having these talks? I must destroy them.

Rebuilding year? What rebuilding year? Keaton Louth and his Vancouver Wolves exploded out of their rebuild to claim the top seed in the North American Conference, and proceeded to win it all after taking over the Continental Cup Finals against the Helsinki Titans. Bolstered with talented young forwards, such as Andrew Su, Gregg Stallion, and Kevin King, along with a rookie class including Venus Thightrap, Emi Rune, and Jesper Norberg that was eager to win, the Wolves had the perfect blend of youthful energy and veteran smarts, along with outstanding play in net from Jimmy Spyro, proved to be Season 74's winning formula. Their depth proved to be their biggest strength, and Brock Louth went out on top with a championship win.

Another team with a strong rebuild in progress, the arrival of MVP candidate Mikko Lahtinen in a trade gave Moscow a massive boost, as they went from promising to immediate contenders overnight. With the ever-reliable Raymond Bernard in net and Vladimir Pavlov, Alex Letang and Oscar Lagesson patrolling the blue line, the Menace lived up to their name and proved to be the top team in the league during the regular season, going 51-19-2 for 104 points, nine more than the second highest Vancouver. Although their success did not translate to a Continental Cup, the groundwork is laid for a run or two. If Lahtinen can get more supporting pieces on offense… watch out.

Moving on to individual awards, first up is the Alexander Beketov Trophy, annually awarded to the league leader(s) in assists. Traditionally won by defensemen recently, Patrik Tallinder certainly put in a valiant effort, recording an impressive 72 assists to lead all forwards. However, three defensemen finished ahead of him, including teammate Lincoln Tate, who tallied 78. The legendary Condor Adrienne finished with 82, the resurgent Jeff Downey tallied 84, but it was Moscow's Vladimir Pavlov who capped off his final season in style with a league-leading 88 assists! For reference, that is a season-high number of assists since Joseph Bassolino recorded 89 back in Season 63. Incredible season for Pavlov, as he left it all on the ice in his final season.

Next up is the Kevin Brooks Trophy, awarded to the player(s) who led the VHL in goals. Last season, we saw Sigard Gunnar break the 60 goal mark for the first time since Season 68, and, well, it happened again this season. Three players topped 50 goals, including Patrik Tallinder and Brock Louth, who tied with 53 goals each. Mikko Lahtinen, coming to Moscow after an off-season trade, simply exploded in his first season with the Menace. With 61 goals, he was simply not a player any goalie wanted to see in any position to take a shot, yet opposing defenses just didn't seem to be able to stop him. The focal point of Moscow's offense seemed to simply be too much for even top defensive units to as much as slow down, resulting in becoming the leading goal scorer of Season 74.

Congratulations to your Kevin Brooks Trophy winner, Mikko Lahtinen!

Up next we have the Mike Szatkowski Trophy, awarded annually to the player(s) who led the VHL in points. It was a tight race for the top point scorer this year, with Mikko Lahtinen here and Patrik Tallinder dueling for the top spot. Both players had phenomenal seasons, but as you can see, Mikko is returning to his seat, and it isn't because he doesn't think he can carry both trophies! Lahtinen's 123 points was a tremendous total, but it was Tallinder who led the league in points, with his 127 the highest total since Gabriel McAllister tallied 139 points in Season 63.

Congratulations to the Mike Szatkowski Trophy winner, with 127 points, Patrik Tallinder!

The Greg Clegane Trophy, awarded to the netminder with the lowest goals allowed average in the league, means we'll be taking a moment to spread some goaler love. With the massive uptick in scoring in recent seasons, you'd expect the netminders to be struggling, but that isn't necessarily the case. The winner of this year's Clegane Trophy will have the distinction of having the highest goals allowed average yet, but not by a huge margin. Joakim Bruden, playing in relief for the HC Davos Dynamo, tallied an impressive 1.69 GAA in 11 games, earning a much-deserved shout out. But amongst starters, it came down to the Calgary Wranglers' Jacques Lafontaine, last season's Greg Clegane Trophy winner, and Raymond Bernard, the rock in net for the Moscow Menace. With just .06 separating them, Raymond Bernard's 2.53 GAA has won him the Greg Clegane Trophy!

Congratulations to Raymond Bernard, the Greg Clegane Trophy winner!

Moving on to our first award determined by the Awards Committee, and not by stats, it's time to award the Frederik Elmebeck Trophy. Named in the honor of Frederik Elmebeck, a wonderful man who engaged our community with incredible passion and positivity before he was taken from us all far too soon. This award is to honor the lasting legacy of Elmebeck and the member who best served the VHL community. This season, the nominees, as selected by you, the VHL community, are:

@IamMOOSE, for his contributions towards and defense of the VHL community.

@Hylands, for his immeasurable contributions towards member retention and his impact on the VHL community.

@JigglyGumballs, for his work as an AGM in the VHLM and contributions to the VHL on social media.

@MattyIce, for his passion in generating excellent league content with VSN.

@Spartan, for his fantastic work creating a model community for member retention with the Las Vegas Aces.

@rjfryman, for his tireless work in maintaining both pre and post draft rankings.

@Ricer13, for his tremendous work with the Miami Marauders both on and off the ice.

@Patrik Tallinder, for his excellent contributions to VSN, along with his work towards member retention with highlighting rookie players.

Congratulations to all of our nominees,  each of them are big reasons why the VHL has been and will continue to be such a great community to be a part of. The votes have been tallied, and the winner of the Season 74 Frederik Elmebeck Trophy winner is…

Spoiler

@Ricer13!

As the founder of the Miami Marauders, the VHLM's newest franchise, it didn't take long for Ricer to make an impact. The Marauders quickly developed into a tremendous atmosphere for new members, not only maintaining their interest, but building enthusiasm for their players and the league as a whole. Miami has become a coveted destination for VHLM players, evidenced by capping off a memorable Cinderella run as the #8 seed to win a Founder's Cup in just their third season in the league. Ricer's impact on the VHLM and the VHL is undeniable, and he takes home a much-deserved Frederik Elmebeck Trophy. Congratulations!!

Thank you to everyone who voted for me. This in my opinion is one of the most important awards in this league. Hard work pays off and everyone who was voted for along side with me is just as deserving!

The VHL had a fantastic crop of young talent this season, and it's time to recognize the very best with the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy! Awarded to the player deemed to be the top rookie of the year, Season 74 had plenty of young guns who weren't only ready for the VHL, but ready to thrive in the bigs. Vancouver's run to the Continental Cup happened in large part due to the contributions of Jesper Norberg and Venus Thightrap, two outstanding rookie forwards. Two rookie goalies, Jacob Tonn and Doug Dimmadome, made their debuts this year and held their own. Matty Socks of the Chicago Phoenix and Victor Grachev of the Warsaw Predators showed that they can be the next stud blue liners of the VHL. John Merrick of the Toronto Legion had a better season than my current player ever has, with 38 goals and 46 assists for 84 points, helping take Toronto back to the playoffs.

In the end, however, there was one standout the Awards Committee simply couldn’t ignore. And your winner is…

Spoiler

trophy_calderlg.jpg

Dakota Lamb!!

Warsaw featured three of the top ten rookie scorers: Jeremy Lin, Victor Grachev, and Dakota Lamb. A dominant force at center, this spectacular rookie scored 90 points, with 43 goals and 47 assists. Ten of those goals came on the power play, already a major force on the man advantage. However, he was arguably just as good in his own end of the ice, with an impressive 40 blocked shots and 133 hits, along with a shorty on the penalty kill. He even finished with an even plus/minus on a team near the bottom of the standings! The Warsaw Predators are shaping up to have a bright future, and they've got the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner leading the way. Congratulations once again to Dakota Lamb, the top rookie of Season 74!

Voting:

Dakota Lamb: 8, Matty Socks: 1, John Merrick: 0, Victor Grachev: 0, Doug Dimmadome: 0, Jacob Tonn: 0
