Critiquing the Crests: Las Vegas Aces

Recommended Posts

Welcome to a special VSN edition of Critiquing the Crests! As you may know, this series has been on hold since I was hired at VSN. Luckily though, current schedule and priorities have given me this opportunity to do this series as a special treat! The team that I have chosen is special to me, as they have given me my starting point in the league and I am nearing my final days with them. Let us critique the Las Vegas Aces crest, shall we?

There is actually a lot to unpack here, but let's start simple. The colors of green, black, and white are definitely unique and ones I don't see much of in hockey, especially when associated with Las Vegas. Yet it looks nice and gives it that odd bit of flare still.

Now the actual logo, let's start from the front and then go deeper. Right in the middle of the logo is a dual-colored spade, the shape that has been on the Aces uniform since their original logo. The green-black spade is on top of what may appear to be a white void space, but it's actually a silhouette of an advanced military fighter jet. "Ace" is typically used as a moniker for pilots of military jets who have shot down at least 5 enemy aircraft. Which is fitting, considering that during the Toledo and Bern days of the franchise, they won a total of 5 Founder's Cups before relocating to Las Vegas.

Behind said fighter jet, we have a dual-colored diamond on what appears to be a black, green, and white poker chip. Given Las Vegas and their world renowned industry of gambling, it's very fitting to have the poker chip on there.

In conclusion, the Las Vegas Aces logo is a bit busy, but incorporates a ton of elements that fit extremely well for the team, all using a fairly different color scheme for what we normally see from a team in Las Vegas. I'm gonna give this logo a score of 8/10 and adding in a massive thank you to the Aces organization for giving me my start in this league. That's all from me today, but tune in very soon for special coverage of the WJC right here on VSN!

Really great review @Hex Universe! I love these articles you do, as I usually don't put too much time into even pondering about the logos so it's awesome to see a bit more of a breakdown and to notice things I haven't before, like for example the fighter jet in the middle that now I can't unsee! I do find it odd that Vegas wouldn't use Red over their Green choice for a secondary colour, but a wonderful logo nonetheless!

I'm big dumb

Honestly, I've spent a big portion of my life in casinos, and that particular conclusion didn't hit me until Sonnet told me (he's the one that made it), so it's not entirely surprising you didn't get there either.
