Battre Sandstrom - The Black Sheep

Battre Sandstrom is the younger, better looking, better at hockey, and all around just better than his older brother Onde Sandstrom. Battre followed very closely in his brother's footsteps. There was a Christmas I think it was around 99 where he watched his brother open up a gift that would change his life forever. He watched his brother open up a hockey stick. Now their father would take Onde to the local ice pond to teach him the sport, it was their fathers first love. Battre would be jealous of his older brother that he wanted to get out onto the ice and spend some time with his father and his brother. He waited and waited as the Christmases and Birthdays passed, Battre never received that sought after gift, he never received that stick or even anything hockey related. He couldn’t be like his brother or be close to his father like he wanted.

 

This forced Battre to save up his lunch money and eventually bought his own stick and skates. He hid this from his father and brother and would sneak off to practice on his own. He found he had a wicked slapshot and was able to skate pretty fast. He had a big frame to block other kids out and make plays. He was a pretty big guy, just like his brother so when he played with the local kids he towered over them. Most of the kids were afraid to play against him but loved having him on their team. Battre loved the sport but even more so just wanted to prove his brother and father wrong, that he in fact could play with them and even be better.

 

One night he explained everything to his Mother, she was surprised that he was doing this on his own, buying his own equipment, practicing and playing with the other boys. She was so proud of him and mad at his father. From there on out, she would be the one to sign him up for hockey tournaments and local leagues. All of this happened without the knowledge of his father, which was easy when there was an age gap between him and his brother. Eventually Battre got so good he was invited to the Youth Sweden Hockey Development league. This is where the secret died, his father and brother found out. His father was furious that Battre was being scouted and made it to a prestigious league. Battre was the black sheep of the family and this further proved how little his father thought of him. Well with the support of his Mom Battre kept getting better and better and is on a trajectory to to be on a path to the pros.
