a tale of two Brothers // 1st Quarter done

For once the frères suisses did not have a Canadian week and only played one game against the Aces since our last issue.

Said game was won by the Hounds by the smallest of margins 3-2. The Jansers did not make it on the score board though Marcel came close when he only hit the post after his slapshot from the blue line at 17:26 minutes into the second period. He also took a minor for hooking. Luckily, the ensuing power play did not lead to a goal. Ty Slaney decided the game with his goal 1:11 into the third when he buried his own rebound. Overall the Hounds did a lot of things right. They dominated in shots (40 vs 25) and only conceded one goal out of four power play attempts. Their own power play remains lackluster (0/4). Both goaltenders showed a decent performance with Grubauer being slightly better (.925 vs .920). The three stars were made up entirely from Mississaugan players with LW 2 (0g/2a), Center 1 (1g/0a) and Slaney 1g/0a) which was the game winning goal.

Please find the Swiss siblings' stats as per below:

Marcel: 18gp, 3g, 8a, 11pts, +0, 14 PIM, 10 hits, 45sb

Daniel: 18gp, 8g, 14a, 22pts, +0, 4 PIM, 39 hits, 10sb, 1 gwg, 2ppg

After the first quarter now done, we want to draw a small summary.

We rate the Hounds' Goaltending with a solid 7/10. The Hounds' net minder is hardly ever the reason for a loss and even steals games for his team or at least gives them a fighting chance. A little more consistency would be on our wishlist in this position.

The Defence deserves in our opinion also 7/10. The Mississaugan franchised allowed 94 goals in 18 games (seventh in the league). This is certainly nothing to write home about, but it is better than can be expected from such a young D-line and we are confident, that the playmaking/transition game will improve when the players keep on getting used to the higher skill level in the VHLM.

The Offence on the other hand is a little bit of an achilles heel on the roster. No doubt there is talent in that group of young players but they are not consistent enough in their efforts to create plays. They only scored 65 goals in 18 games (tenth of the league) and often games were lost due to lack of production and the sub-par power play efficiency. Again, we recognize that there is a lot of potential in the team and that Dan focuses on his defense play (though he showed some scoring skills so far). All in all we rate the Offence at 5/10.

We will follow up on our local heroes in our next issue. Stay tuned...
