Yun Chiang Interview Regarding WJC and his Future

Recommended Posts

Yun Chiang, the point leader for the S80 Miami Marauders, just competed in the WJC with Team Asia taking home a bronze medal. Yun Chiang is eligible to be selected in the VHL and VHLE  drafts, but will likely not play in the VHL until S82 at the earliest. We were able to catch up with Chiang as he was about to get back on the plane to head back to China and ask him some questions.

How do you feel about Team Asia's performance in the WJC?

I am happy we got a medal, but I think we could have performed better. We all sort of entered a slump in the round robin stage. Luckily we were able to win the elimination match against the USA, but if we were playing as we could have I think we could have beaten Canada in the semi-finals. I loved how our defensemen were able to net some goals even if we were unable to. I believe that is part of the reason we were able to win any games in the round robin stage.

You are no longer eligible to play in the VHLM. Are you excited to move on with your career?

I will for sure miss Miami and my teammates in Miami, but I am excited to move into the VHLE. I really loved my teammates especially Juha, and I think they are part of the reason I was able to perform as well as I did last season. I think the transition into the VHLE will be a bit more difficult, but I truly believe I will be able to do it assuming I continue my current work ethic.

Do you have any idea what team may select you in the VHLE or VHL drafts?

I honestly have no idea. I have a list of 5 teams in the VHL and 3 in the VHLE, but if I had to place a bet if those were the teams that would pick me I don't think I would take that bet. I just don't know how the GMs in the VHL and VHLE will value me as a player. I think it is possible I can sneak into the first round of the VHL draft, but I really do not know because I do not know how valuable I am to a VHL team.

You lead the Marauders last season in points. Do you think this could be a commonality in your career?

I don't know. I hope I can, but it as I enter the higher leagues it will be more difficult to score as many goals in a season. I hope whatever team I play for I will be able to get the puck in the net as much as possible. I think my assists should stay around the same, but I am a bit more worried about my goals because the goalies in the VHLE are better than in the VHLM and I will have to be more accurate with my shots to get the puck past them.

Are there any players you would wish to play with again in the future?

Actually yes, I really enjoyed playing with Juha Jarvinen @Collusion with the Marauders and Sergey @Bulduray_1 with Team Asia. I really hope our paths will cross again in the future. I think wherever we meet we will have instant chemistry on and off the ice. Of course I did love playing with all of my teammates, but those are some the standout players I really enjoyed talking to in the locker room. I remember celebrating with Juha after he got an assist and not the person who actually scored the goal. I love how Juha has so much fun on the ice while still being one of the better goalies in the VHLM and in the VHLE and VHL draft. I can't wait to see what he is able to do with his career.

I did lost in the bronze medal games versus versus a team call Team Asia ( I don’t know if you know them) it was a close game.

Never heard of them. I have heard of the 7 point Yun Chiang game though. I think you may recognize it from earlier in the Maruaders season
