A tale of two Brothers // Inter-season interviews part 2

In our second inter-season interview, Gretta Hjalmarsdottir (GH) drove to Vasteras to meet Marcel Janser (MJ) of the Iron Eagles in the ABB Arena Nord, the home of the Swiss' new club.

 

GH: 'Hej Marcel. How are you?'

MJ: 'I am good, thanks Gretta. Still a little bit heartbroken about the early out in the playoffs with Mississauga. I soo badly wanted to get this cup for the team and for N0HBDY who put so much trust in me. I feel I failed the team.'

 

GH: 'I am sure this is not true. You produced over a point per game, took only one minor penalty and blocked almost 3 shots per game. I do not think anyone would have asked more of you. Have you had already a call from any of the WC or WJC GM's yet?'

MJ: 'That is very nice of you to say. No, so far, no-one has contacted me, but that is alright, there are so many talented defencemen out there, I do not really count on being called, to be honest.'

 

GH: 'What are your plans for the immediate future? Obviously, you have already reported to Vasteras.'

MJ: 'Well, I first need to find a place called home, as I live in a hotel right now. Daniel gave me already an address of a real estate agency. The ladies in the office were very friendly and some of them offered that I could move in with them. As I have ungodly hours to get up and tuck in, I politely refused, as I did not want to disturb their daily routine. Other than accommodation I do the usual maintenance/keeping in shape routine under guidance of the Vasteras training staff. And I am going to learn Swedish, as I want to be able to the people here in their native tongue... or at least make an effort, unfortunately languages were not my strong suit in school, I was more of a history buff.'

GH: 'That sounds like you have your work cut out for you. What do you expect from the coming season?'

MJ: 'Well, I will have to find my place in the roster. My guess is that I will be allocated to third line duties and penalty killing units from the start. Then it is up to me, to prove that I am 1st line material. Make no mistake, the competition does not sleep and at the end of the day, management has to do what is best for the team, not what flatters my ego most. Ideally, those two coincide, but you never know. For the team, who was Renaissance Cup winner just a mere season ago, and this past season missed the playoffs by quite a margin, it is 'reculer pour saulter mieux', i.e. to take a step back in order to jump higher. I think to reach the post season must be our main goal. From then on, everything is fair game.'

 

GH: 'Okay, that were all the questions we had so far, thanks for your time.'

MJ: 'Thanks for coming over. I would invite you for a drink, but the coach is expecting me in the torture chamber, to work on my strength, in 5 minutes. Godspeed on your way back to Oslo.'

 

GH: 'Thanks and goodbye.'
