MOSCOW - The Russian Olympic Committee team (which I will refer to Team Russia for the rest of this article for convenience), will be heading to the Olympics without an Ovechkin, Malkin, or Panarin in sight. Instead, the NHL has opted to not send its players to the Olympics at all. However, VHL players are still available to represent their country in the international sporting event. Sigard Petrenko had been invited to tryout for the Team Russia hockey team. Should he be successful, he would be competing in his first major international tournament outside of the VHLM’s World Juniors.

“I mean, it’s cool to be able to win the Continental or Stanley cups but the greatest honour in hockey is the Olympic Gold Medal. Representing your country, wearing their colours, and being able to win for your people is pretty neat. It’s a great opportunity and I hope I am able to be selected.”

So imagine his surprise when two days later, he was displayed on the roster when it was announced on the IIHF page.

“I woke up and saw the roster. My name was on it! And then after that, I got the call. I mean, weird I saw the post before getting the call but I don’t care. It’s a great honour to be selected and I hope to prove that Russian hockey is still at the top.”
