In this week's edition of VHL Sports Science, we take a closer look into a new obsession of the league; wearing a weight lifting belt while playing games. Now when we think about this from an outsider's perspective, it makes absolutely no sense. However, the players in the league that do it, swear by it. One player went on to say "I can't live without it, I wear it everywhere now. My wife has never been happier." Does a weight lifting belt really help however? The VHL Sports Science team was on it and after conducting a review they showed that the belt may provide stability and psychological support to a player so they feel they are stronger and less likely to get injured. For game play, the only real advantage may be during the player's slap shot. The increased intraabdominal pressure may allow players to exert more force during activities that require high levels of strength like slap shots or hitting. Other than that, they really be out here just lookin goofy.
