Moritz Stauffer is an exciting VHL prospect hailing from the country of Germany. He came into the VHLM late into the S86 campaign signing a temporary deal with the Mexico City Kings and helped them get to the second round of the VHLM playoffs; suffering a game 7 defeat to the eventual champion Marlins. In the offseason Stauffer would get drafted to the Halifax 21st where he would play the full S87 campaign on the teams top defensive unit. Stauffer proved to be an elite two-way defensemen in the league but ultimately the 21st lacked the depth to go far in the playoffs and they were knocked out in Game 5 of the first round. Stauffer should be on most team's radar as he becomes draft eligible this offseason and it is expected he will first spend a season in the VHLE before making the jump.

STRENGTHS:

Stauffer possesses a strong all-around game as a great skater who can move the puck well out of his own end. He can make plays with the puck and help setup his teammates and is able to score at times as well. Defensive consistency is perhaps his greatest strength as Stauffer is a solid anchor on the blueline who definitely does NOT lack size in this league. Stauffer is very disciplined as he has a quiet presence at times on the ice and does not take many penalties. He is capable of playing and contributing on both the power play and the penalty kill.

WEAKNESSES:

Despite his size, Stauffer lacks strength as a defensemen and does not instill fear into opposing forwards when in his own end and on the other end he can sometimes easily get knocked off the puck. His quiet presence also indicates he lacks leadership in his game as he has not shown any signs of leading a team or being a veteran presence in the locker room; this could be due to his limited capability of speaking English.

SCOUTING ANALYSIS:

Grade:

4/5* Potential
Likelihood of reaching potential: A

NHL Comparison: Moritz Seider
Play Style: Two-way Defensemen

Stauffer projects to be a top defensemen in the VHL but isn't considered a generational prospect or a Top 3 pick. His two way game as a defensemen should make him coveted by a lot of VHL teams and it's likely he goes late in the first round. He shows no signs of someone who won't reach his potential and should be considered a safe pick for any VHL team.
