Even though he has a full enough plate, VHL prospect Ray Stanton has still been pursuing higher education in the wake of the VHL Draft. Despite signing his entry level contract recently, he has reported to me that he has been still taking summer classes in his free time.

"It was just one class, I just wanted to see what the deal was."

I found the opportunity for a brief interview to his newly-purchased summer home in Paradise, Nevada. After his participation in this season's Junior Showcase Tournament, he's still finding time to get some academic exploration done. He's decided to take one class at a time, not with the goal of getting a degree, but to learn more about the world, and himself, at a fair pace no less.

"I was looking through the course catalogue, and they had a few courses that caught my eye", Ray Stanton noted. "I found that I had some hours a week to spare in my strict regimen."

Well, you're getting paid to play hockey. Shouldn't your focus solely be on getting better at that?

"That's a one-dimensional way of getting better at something. I've taken principles from things I've learned in school, and applied them to all other aspects of my life."

Sure, but this is a sport we're talking about here.

"I have a better connection with my francophone teammates, now that I can speak parts of their language. I could probably find other courses that would apply in different ways.
