Prospect Scouting Report - Brandon Petan Jr

Offense: Petan Jr has always been a player who can put the puck in the net. Having scored 37 goals in 68 games in his WHL S93 season, and having had 52 in 48 before his move to Ottawa, this has been evidenced at a very high level of play. 10 goals in his first 19 VHLM games on a last place Ottawa team that has struggled mightily for offense is also a very encouraging sign. Brandon still shows room for improvement in his decision-making while on the puck (when to pass, when to shoot), and additionally struggles to win it when it comes to 50/50 battles. Physicality has come along strongly, with Petan Jr averaging more than 2 hits per game with the Lynx.

Defense: Petan Jr has shown again and again that he is willing to put his body on the line to help the team win and has said as much in interviews. His skating technique is sound, but he struggles to show the game-breaking speed many thought might be coming from him. Brandon has stated he'll be spending the offseason working on making his speed more explosive as well as getting stronger to be on par with others at the high level he now plays at. Other strengths include the tenacity Brandon exhibits when the puck is along the boards and the discipline he (or his low number of penalty minutes) shows.

Mental: Petan Jr has drawn nothing but glowing remarks from coaches and teammates, and seems to be an important presence in all the locker rooms he is a part of. Having been assistant captain of the Vancouver Giants for S94, he has experience helping lead a team as well. He will no doubt find it easy to make the jump to the VHLM mentally as well, given the former teammates that are starting their careers here with him. Brandon appears to be 100% committed to helping the team win and has not let individual stats creep into his decision-making.

As Brandon Petan Jr enters the VHLM Dispersal Draft he appears to be among the top tier of candidates for selection. In his words, "I'm really happy to even be considered alongside some of these other big names. I want to let all the teams know they'll definitely be happy with how hard I'll work to win next year and how excited I'll be to get to work with whoever might draft me!" Like everyone else, the projected 5th overall pick can't wait for the upcoming draft!

I’m starting to regret Halifax not having a 1st rounder in this upcoming draft… I’m sure Petan will be an incredible player wherever he ends up!

Also, sorry about that last game, I told our team to take it easy, but I don’t know why they would start listening to me now 🤷🏼‍♀️. It was still a close game though!
