It seemed as though it was only a few days ago that Aaron Hartley walked out of the Ottawa 67’s locker room after a tough loss nearing the end of their season, and declared that he would be joining the VHLM… Oh wait, that’s because it was. Yes, Aaron Hartley will be amongst many promising rookies who will be jumping over to the VHLM in order to compete with the best of the best in hockey today and will be reporting to the Bern Royals in a few days time. But before he begins his journey, we need to provide a little information on Hartley and what he’s all about.

For one, when Aaron Hartley walks into a room, he makes his presence known. He’s loud, energetic, and if there is a spotlight to be stolen, you can bet yourself that he will be stealing it. He loves attention, and he will show that both on and off the ice. Coming from a big family, and competing for attention all his life, being the middle child of three brothers, that is what we can expect. And after all his life searching for the one thing he could outshine his brothers in, and really make an impact in, he found hockey.

Aaron’s style of play is very different than other players. While scouts all over the world have taken in some of his games, and admired his style, they have had a lot of trouble describing it. Many have said he plays the style of Milan Lucic, as he brings a big bodied presence for an 18 year old, and loves to play the body.

“Wanna’ drop the gloves?”

That’s one thing you’ll hear from Aaron at least once a game, as he loves to bring the energy to his team, and the physicality of his game is one of his top qualities. But what’s different for Aaron is the fact that he can also put the puck into the net. It’s not the prettiest of goals, but he knows where to place himself on the ice. You will find him grinding it out in front of the net looking for the tap-in, but you also need to beware of his lethal one-timer from the right face-off dot. There are many pros, as well as cons to his game. Here are a few of them to give you a brighter idea of why Hartley is the perfect teammate going forward.

Pros

Physicality – Aaron is a very physical player, and you can be sure he will be bringing that physicality in every game he plays. He is not afraid to throw the body, or to take a hit to make a play. His upper-body strength allows him to overpower opposing players and makes him a threat on the ice. Be sure to keep your head up out there, because if you’re caught not looking, chances are you’re getting hit.

Leadership – Aaron is the type of guy any team would like to have as he brings a certain energy to the room and on the bench when playing. His encouragement and motivation make a team want to work harder each and every night, and that is what brings out the best not only in himself, but in his teammates as well. He loves to joke around, and can come off a little arrogant most of the time, but in the end it’s all for the good of his team.

Scoring – Being a more physical player, it is sometimes hard to believe that Hartley is the type of player that can put the puck in the net more than only a few times per season, but he has proven to be a solid scorer everywhere he plays, and the main reason for that links back to his wicked one-time that he releases from the right face-off dot. More often than not, he is able to power through other players in order to get in position for that shot, and other times you will find him in front of the net looking for any loose rebounds to tap in.

Cons

Discipline – Hartley, being the physical player that he is, is often focused on bringing energy to his team. But sometimes he can take it too far. If his frustration gets to him on the ice, it can lead to some bad penalties at the wrong times for his team and put them in tough situations. His intentions are always good, but sometimes he lets his emotions get the best of him and takes it too far.

Passing – Hartley does bring his offensive elements to the game, but his passing is what hurts him the most. Being focused on the checks most of the time, it’s hard for him to establish where to send the puck, and sometimes can lead to turnovers in the neutral zone. It is something that he’s been working on and is looking to improve going forward.
