So apparently the VHL is a tough league to play in. Van Lagen knew this coming in but yet had high expectations for himself. He knew he was on the lower end for TPE totals in the VHL and getting playing time might be tough. He believed in his build but he’s on a team full of scorers.

He is playing 3rd line minutes, averaging barely 18 minutes per night with a good chunk of that of special teams. He’s playing with two other scorers so no one is on the ice to pass the puck. He’s playing on the wing, away from his natural position.

Yet, he’s fired 20 shots on net in 8 games which is just fine. He’s a plus 3 in +/- showing he’s more than just a goal scorer. He registered is first 2 points just recently. He will pick up the slack in due time but until then, let the first few games of his career give him a reality check that it is not easy jumping into the VHL with only one year of VHLM experience.

In the weeks ahead, Van Lagen hopes to settle in and find his groove.  He doesn’t anticipate waiting too much longer for his first goal. He has faith in his GM that he’ll get some more minutes as he earns the trust of his teammates. His confidence remains high. Above all else, he knows he will put in every bit of effort he needs to be successful. His future is bright and he knows it.
