Mississauga Hounds rookie Andre LeBastard recorded his first-ever VHLM points tonight against the Houston Bulls. The 18-year-old centre potted a brace in a losing effort, as his club came out on the wrong side of a 7-5 scoreline. LeBastard's excitement on opening his account was somewhat tempered by the team loss however, it was clear to see the kid will never forget the experience. After all, you only get to score your first goal once.

 

Speaking to assembled reporters in the locker room after the game, LeBastard said, "It's a shame we lost this game here tonight, but it was nice to accomplish a personal milestone by scoring my first ever VHLM goal." "To then score my second later in the game was awesome, but I would have taken the 2 points for the win if it meant scoring my first goal in a different game." "My dad texted me to say congratulations and said I have to call my mum later tonight. She's pretty excited and can't talk now dad said."

 

The young player went on to add, "I hope this is the start of a good spell for me and the hockey club." "It was nice to win against the Las Vegas Aces the other night and now that I have a taste of winning and I have scored my first goal, I want to try to settle down, work hard and improve my play to help the boys win again." "It's like the first few games I had that (not scoring), on my mind a little and I think it was bugging me, even if the coaches said it didn't matter too much." "So now that I have scored, I think that I'm a little more sort of clear in my mind and can focus 100 percent on just playing the game." "I'm still like minus three so far after five games and I would like to see that statistic improve in the next couple of games."

 

Despite the win, the Mississauga Hounds have dropped further back in the hunt for the final VHLM playoff place and are looking like a lock to drop out of the race completely this season, unfortunately. As far as the balance of the season goes Andre LeBastard will be hoping to improve his skill level, help his team win and improve his appeal for the upcoming draft. The player himself is less forthcoming on the question of the draft, preferring instead to simply focus on the next scheduled game and learn as much as he can, while he has the opportunity. "I can't thank the coaches here enough, so far", he said. "They are giving me lots of minutes and even power play time, which is amazing." "I want to repay their faith in me by working hard and trying to help my line mates." "If I can do that, whatever happens elsewhere will happen, I'll deal with that at the time it happens." The Mississauga Hounds are next in action when the team face the Houston Bulls.
