Magenta 5
The Rookie Profile - Sasha Petrov Name: Aleksander Petrov Height: 6’2” Weight: 180 Postion: Right Wing Last Year’s Team: Belye Medvedi (MHL) Playing Style: Playmaker Intro Every year in the VHLM Draft there are mysterious prospects that are mainly unknown in the public eye. This year, one of those prospects is Bulgarian, Aleksander “Sasha” Petrov. Petrov has had quite the journey to get to where he is today. The young playmaker has played minor hockey in Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. Although he’s moved around a lot, that hasn’t stopped him from excelling at all levels. Petrov may not be as VHL-ready as some of the prospects in this draft such as O'Malley, Richardson, or Cote, but, he’s definitely got potential to be something special. Pros Playmaking - One of the biggest assets of Sasha’s game is his playmaking abilities. One thing he can do that many others can’t, is that he can make plays happen out of nothing. He has unbelievable vision and sees plays that most other others players can’t. Lastly, Petrov is one of the most creative players in this draft, and he’s not afraid to try new things on the ice and will take risks. Skating - One nickname Petrov received when he was in the MHL, was “The Flash”, and deservingly so. Sasha has exceptional speed coming down the wing and uses his speed to get around defenders. Petrov is an explosive skater with an excellent first step, and gets into top gear very quickly. Although he’s extremely explosive, he’s also very agile and has excellent lateral movement. Puck Handling - Like said earlier, Petrov is extremely creative with the puck, and he has the puck handling abilities to do so. Another nickname that fits his playing style well, that he received is “The Bulgarian Magician”. His puck handling abilities have been compared to players such as Patrick Kane and Pavel Datsyuk. Obviously high praise, but Petrov has superb abilities at controlling the play, and making the defenders make the first move, being patience, and skillful with the puck. The Bulgarian Magician loves to have the puck on his stick. Cons Physicality - At 6’2” feet tall, and weighing in at 180 pounds, Petrov isn’t necessary small, but he does sometimes play like it. He has a tendency to shy away from using his body in times when it could be needed. He often gets intimidated by bigger opponents, and lacks the physical aspect of the game. Most of the time, after he takes a big hit, it usually takes him a while before he can play confident again. Defense - Like many other young offensive wingers, defense is not Petrov’s specialty. Although, he does back check with effort and will get down the ice quick to do so, he tends to be caught drifting a lot. One disadvantage of Petrov’s defensive game is that he is not good at getting in position, and gets caught not guarding the defender at the point. Since Sasha Petrov always wants to get involved in the play he often leaves the defenders he supposed cover, open. Shot - Although, Sasha Petrov is an offensive force, his shot could definitely use work. Last year in the MHL, Petrov managed to score 20 goals, which is very good, but, the majority of those goals came from around crease and as far as pure goal scoring goes, Petrov certainly needs work. His shooting percentage was 7.89%, but whenever Petrov seemed to have a good opportunity to score from long-range he usually missed. Conclusion All in all, Sasha Petrov seems like he could be a very good player in the VHL for a long time. However, there are many aspects of his game that he has to work on, before he can excel at the next level. It will be very interesting to see where he ends up getting drafted in the VHLM Draft, some say he could surprise many by going pretty high, while others think he’s too much of a project to be taken early.
