Fify-five games into the season and I just stumble upon the most exciting news for me as a VHL member. My player, Luc Tessier, center for the mighty Davos Dynamo, finds himself in the Top Five Rookies list. I can’t recall this ever happening for Guy Lesieur. Given his rookie stats I found while researching my Media Spot, I doubt he even sniffed the Top Five.

Yep, there Tessier is at #3 with 31 points behind Markinson with 42 points and Hlozek with 35. Grapes and Bonaparted are right behind Tessier with 29 points each so it’s a close race for point leader. Only 13 points between 1st and 5th and 17 games left to play.

What I find interesting is comparing draft position of these top 5. Might surprise people to know that the Top 5 are members of 4 different draft classes!

Only Markinson and Tessier have hit the Top 5 having debuted after only one season in the VHML. This makes it even more impressive that Markinson holds down #1 – just the second season into his professional career. And Tessier hitting #3 after just one season in juniors is almost equally impressive. Markinson was drafted #2 and Tessier #4 in their shared draft class.

Holozek at #2 was drafted 8th in the S77 draft, Grapes at #4 was drafted 76th in the S75 draft, and Bonaparte at #5 was drafted at 19th in the S76 draft.

For my money, if the rookie of the year race were only between these 5 players, I’d consider it a three-way race with Markinson, Hlozek, and Tessier as the only “true” rookies.
