It was a disappointing end to the season for the Chicago Phoenix, but there was a consolation prize for one player. Chicago goaltender Jean-Pierre Camus was awarded the Aidan Shaw trophy, given to the league’s top goalie. It’s a career first for Camus, who has won a Continental Cup, a Kanou Trophy, and gold medal in the World Cup, but was yet to bring home any regular season accolades. But this season, a .922 save percentage and 2.89 GAA were enough to convince the award voters that JPC was the VHL’s best netminder in S78.

“It’s a great honor to win this award, and a validation for a lot of hard work,” Camus said in his acceptance speech at the show. “I won’t lie, this is something I’ve wanted to achieve in my VHL career for a while. But there’s a part of this that feels empty. I wish we could’ve brought the cup back to Chicago. If anything, this just motivates me to work harder for next season. Not just so I can win another one of these, but so we can win another cup. I want to improve on this, I want to do even better. I’d like for more of my teammates to get recognition like this. Hopefully that all happens next season.”
