The incumbent starter for the Mexico City Kings, Brandt Fuhr, is a bit of an odd character – or at least that’s what his teammates believe.

“Strange guy.”

“Keeps to himself.”

“Goalies are weird.”

“Doesn’t talk too much.”

“I catch him staring at me sometimes.”

For us in the media, it's been the same experience as well. Recently I had the opportunity to interview Fuhr, and while I attempted to ask him hockey related questions all he did was talk about the audio and video equipment we were using.

Introducing Walt Ruff, Team Reporter for the Carolina Hurricanes

“What is that?” Fuhr asked me as he took hold of my microphone, “Is that a… what is that?” He repeated as he held it close to his eyes, and then inhaled a long breath through his nose as though he were sniffing the microphone itself, “This is a device!” He exclaimed, “Yes, a transducer that converts  sound into an electrical signal. Fascinating-,” He suddenly looked at me intently before asking, “May I keep this?”

I shook my head, “No, Brandt, that is our microphone.”

“Ah yes,” he said, “I understand. This is your property.”

“Well,”  I corrected him, “I don’t personally own it, it’s the networks.”

“Networks?” His interest piqued, “What are these networks you speak of?”

“Just one network, MSPN,” I told him, “We cover the Mexico City sports.”

“Interesting,” he responded, “What a meaningless job you have,” he said casually before he saw the look of horror in my eyes, “Oh, I’m sorry,” he was apologetic, “I did not mean to insult you. You don’t have a meaningless job,” he tried to reassure me, “Your life has a lot of meaning.”

“Thank you,” I tried to shake it off, “So, Brandt, if we could continue- how do you feel about the season so far?”

“What is that!?” He exclaimed as he pushed past me and took a hold of the camera that the camera man was holding in front of us, “it appears to be some kind of optical instrument that captures a visual image," He suddenly looked at the camera man intently before he asked, “May I keep this?”
