David Collier Traded To Vasteras

Years later, someone will probably tell you that they saw something that could have been a tear in David Collier’s eye, just before he turned away to look out of the window. But then someone else will point out that the air in this airport terminal is fucking dry and that Collier has only slept about two hours this night, and you will have to admit that this is probably the more reasonable explanation for his eyes being so red.

It’s 9 am in the city of Cologne and David Collier, the German born forward, is looking over the city that has been his home for the last six years. The twin spires of the Cologne Cathedral and the river Rhine are sparkling in the morning sun and the peaceful scenery is only disturbed by the dozens of reporters and camera crews that have gathered behind the hockey player who just an hour ago had learned that he has been traded to the Vasteras Iron Eagles.  There has been no time for a press conference so far because Collier’s new team has a game tonight and the team’s newest acquisition is expected to be there right away. While a team representative is taking care of the check-in, Collier himself talks to the media for the first time since learning that he has been traded, less than 48 hours before the trade deadline:

“This didn’t come unexpected, but it still was a shock for me. There has been so much talk in the media these last few weeks about me being traded, but when it actually happens it still feels somewhat unreal. I had such a great time here in Cologne and will forever be grateful for the chances they have given me, leaving this awesome place that has been my home since I came into the league hurts a lot. But at the same time I’m really looking forward to this new challenge, the Vasteras Iron Eagles are a great team with some very competent people in charge, so I’m confident that I will fit in greatly there. I know that some people around the league don’t like this franchise or don’t take it seriously, but I would love to prove them wrong and I’m sure that everyone in Vasteras feels that same fire.”

The actual trade that sends Collier to Vasteras also sees a 3rd rounder going to Sweden, with a 2nd round pick in Season 41 coming back along with Cody Inko. For Collier it is a return to the team that drafted him almost seven years ago, but then decided to trade him to Cologne before he had even hit the ice in the VHL once.

“Yeah, it is kinda weird right now”, Collier told the reporters when asked about this chapter in his relations to Vasteras, “things didn’t go great back then but there were no hard feelings when they traded me, in the end it was a business move and now me coming back is a business move as well. I will give everything for this team and I’m confident that both the staff and the fans will give me a friendly welcome.”
