Dallas Stars defenseman Stephen Johns announces retirement from NHL

Tom Eagles, last years Jake Wylde trophy winner, today announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season.

" It's definitely a tough day having to announce my retirement but unfortunately that's just the way it goes. The league has a maximum of 8 years playing time and at the end of this season I will have reached that limit. I am grateful for the Calgary organization for selecting me 3rd overall and giving me a home to compete in for 7 seasons and I would also like to thank London for giving me one last chance at a cup. I will be giving it my all to make sure we give it our best shot. Now as I move on, I look forward to watching my son, Henry, light up the league and will definitely be a big part in his training."

While the season is not over yet and Tom is sure to get more stats...up to this point of the article it can be said he has had a very successful career in the VHL. While he has not won any cups yet and most likely won't be a HOF candidate, you can't deny the fact that this was a career for the books.

As of today Tom has 559 games played, 136 goals, 379 assists, 515 points, +/- of 104, 1416 hits and 1209 shots blocked. He will leave the league as the SB record holder for the Wranglers and also with one personal award to his name,  the Jake Wylde. Tom spent most of his time in the VHL as a Wrangler, having been very loyal to the team that drafted him 3rd overall. While his original plan was to test FA, he just couldn't give up on the Wranglers. He will always fondly remember his time there and the opportunities the core group had to win a cup for the team and for his GM. Having agreed to a trade in his final season in order to help the Wranglers rebuilt, Tom was sent to London where he is being given one last chance to win the cup and he has really stepped up his game.

This season for London he has recorded his first ever hat-trick and also set a personal best in Goals having scored 26 so far in the season. It will be a close call if he will also set a personal best in points but it looks like he may not hit that this season. We will have to wait and see if this season brings any more personal awards for Tom.

" For me, I don't care if I beat my personal best in points or win awards, all I want is to win the cup before I hang the skates up for good and I believe we have a great opportunity in London. The team has been playing well and with this being my last playoffs in the VHL, I will be making sure I am playing at 120% and hopefully that will also motivate our team to perform"
